Bridget Cameron on Writing

I love your poetry and photographs! You have a deep and enquiring mind, and I like that!

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – along the way…

This morning, soon after I woke up, I was reading your poem “Along the way…” and it is so splendid, intuitive and has a profound play of words and ideas. As Aristotle says, beings with higher consciousness always reside in the realm of ideas and not settle cozily on circumlocution. Reading your poems irradiates your warmth, wisdom, and mystical aura… It inspires me a lot. I would like to send you a poem by my favorite poet, Rabindranath Tagore who has inspired me in my creative pursuit, after which its your poems which have inspired me to the same extent. It is Incredible!

Distant Time

I know not from what distant time
thou art ever coming nearer to meet me.
Thy sun and stars can never keep thee hidden from me for aye.

In many a morning and eve thy footsteps have been heard
and thy messenger has come within my heart and called me in secret.

I know not only why today my life is all astir,
and a feeling of tremulous joy is passing through my heart.

It is as if the time were come to wind up my work,
and I feel in the air a faint smell of thy sweet presence.

Tony Maude on New Poem – along the way…

Deep, rich and satisfying, Scott. As so many people wind themselves into a frenzy over something they don’t really believe in, its timely to remember that so often it is not the things we fret, plan and stress about that enrich our lives the most, but those accidents that life throws in our path which cause us to see/do things we never would have done otherwise.

Merry Christmas to you and yours – and a Happy New Year.

Dear Scott
Poetry is as personal as it is too others who can relate to whatever is being written, it inspires, encourages, boost moral, self-esteem, within, and it reaches those that cannot be reached in other ways. Your poetry reaches, teaches others to aspire to greater heights in their own words

LKWatts on The Maya

Wow, I think these are some of the most interesting pictures I have seen for a while.

LKWatts on The path ahead is always clear…

How pretty!

LKWatts on  New Poem – along the way…

Hi Scott, this is a lovely poem. I especially liked this verse:

So try your best

Neither to fret,

Nor be too ambitious

To ever notice such slips,

Because unexpected magic

Can often happen too,

Between such pages,

When, even briefly,

Disparate energies come together

That have never been aligned before.

I certainly need to take note of the first three lines and try to keep perspective on things.

Kind Regards
Laura

‘As your burgeoning life,

With all its strands,

Its threads pulling together,

Slowly becomes

A marvellously rich book,

Steadily gathering folios and meaning.’…wonderfully put…

HA on New Poem – along the way…

Wise and very well-penned. Things in life have to be savored, these moments are but temporary and they will pass by just like that. I liked how you intended upon the preciousness of now, of every thing that is good. I also liked the similes of the third and fourth verses which aptly romanticize the theme.

Elizabeth on  New Poem – along the way…

We must all stay alert or chance to miss the magic in that book still to be written,

Elizabeth

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – along the way…

Ah! A beautiful poem on meeting and bonding on the walks of life…making memories, finding emotionaltreasures and above all always believing in blessed fortuitous happenstance. Yes, the magic of moments can never be taken for granted! Who knows what the next second might bring, but if we follow your beautiful thoughts here, Scott, we’ll certainly collect a bagful of garnet moments from amidst all the coarse pebbles strewn in our lives. Loved this poem.

I so love the wisdom in “So each and every time
You are so visited,
Slowed and diverted
By selfless light and radiance,
Be sure to pause
And treat this happenstance
As the passing charm that it is.”

We forget in the hurly burly of life, that these moments are fleeting, and are to be cherished.

Uma Bhurtah on New Poem – Dazzling icon photographed at the Peter & Paul Cathedral, St Petersburg – Happy Christmas everyone…

Beautiful and captivating picture Scott! I have always been a fervent devotee of mother Mary and lord Jesus Christ though I turned Hindu after marriage. Mother Mary accompanied my husband in so many important steps of his life, especially during his exams. For my part, mother Mary fulfilled my wish to become a mother, whereas I was condemned to remain childless due to some gynecological complications, and she also fulfilled our wish having our own house in Mauritius, our native land. She has been and is a real mother for us. Lord Jesus Christ always remains my savior and biggest love too as he always accompanied me in every step of my life.

Banu Bidarkund on Dazzling icon photographed at the Peter & Paul Cathedral, St Petersburg – Happy Christmas everyone…

Beautiful indeed

Aria Ligi on Poem – along the way…

This is lovely and yet deceptively deep. I loved the lines which state:
For such moments
Often melt away all too soon,
As if stolen from your soul,
Slipping through your fingers
Just as easily and prettily
As they were once found,
So fortuitously,
Like sparkling garnets in a stream
On the moated riverbed of life.

and then:

And despite
Any such flux in fortune,
A material depth,
Not present before,
Gradually accrues,
As your burgeoning life,
With all its strands,
Its threads pulling together,
Slowly becomes
A marvellously rich book,
Steadily gathering folios and meaning.

This asks us to look deep within at choices made, and then the subtle quality of what we want, versus what is hidden within. Which is of greater value? Do we take stock and lend merit to what is least understood of no monetary value or clasp tightly what will be naught tomorrow?

Aria Ligi on Dazzling icon photographed at the Peter & Paul Cathedral, St Petersburg – Happy Christmas everyone…

Beautiful. This reminds me of the Renaissance art of Italy which expresses both love and imminent loss. Simple and exquisite.

Shari J LeKane-Yentumi on New  Poem – along the way…

Dear Scott, I liken life stories to a book of recipes, lovingly collected through hard work and experience, then cataloged by entree, savory or sweet, or sometimes just desserts. Each day brings a new menu to appease the palate and satiate the hunger for life.

Neena Sharma on New Poem – as the years…

Scott sir, I liked the beautiful use of metaphors eg: we all live a life on the brink of razor’s edge, of ecstasy or disaster, similarly blessing or curse… and similes too, in your lovely philosophical poem… All the yin yang of life’s joys and sorrows and thereby, the following turbulence in mind… Sscillating between hope and despair, so subtly portrayed in your delicate poem.

keep up the good work with your innovative creative genius, as always, Scott sir.
God Bless!

Thanks for posting and sharing!
With earnest and fondest regards
Neena

Dr. Hedva Rabinson Bachrach on New Poem – as the years…

Very Dear Sir,

Your poems are seas of deep thought, interwinned with deep feeling.. and throughout the two poems I read, you have always a link of beauty… which is very impressive ” the crease…. which was once a river..” and the warmth too…

You are a wonderful poet, sir, and one can learn much from you.. I also think that it is some new direction of poetry.. not to the little, mundane things but to the things of a higher level of pondering.. Thank you so much, I hope to read more. Hedva

OMG!!! Can I steal this picture please? :)

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – each of us…

Awesome! The last two lines are killing in impact! I love the thought that runs through thus poem – living life everyday but searching for something more…something that separates the husk from the grain of existence. Aren’t we all hunting for just that? Your poem is a fantastic ode to that journey hidden at the cure of our hearts and our souls. Loved it dear Scott!

Vinita Agrawal on The beauty of Meso America

Vinita Agrawal on The Maya

Vinita Agrawal on  New Poem – as the years…

Absolutely marvellous write! I love the way you’ve roped in the freedom of childhood days and juxtaposed it with the days of adult travails in just a few lines in the first stanza. And then so much more follows, so many remarkable observations of precious time slipping by, of us living at the edge of disaster and ecstasy but miraculously meeting neither! This is another treasure of a write dear Scott and the flow is as smooth as water…it simply swirls around my heart!

Shamini Rajah on New Poem – as the years…

Hi Scott, love you work. Thanks for sharing, so uplifting. Beautiful writing that calms, soothes and makes your feel good.

Darlene Elizabeth Williams on New Poem – each of us…

Lovely, Scott. I’m rather dense when it comes to poetry, but several lines struck deep within. This verse in particular resonates:

Weak as we are,
It’s not always possible
To hold station for long enough
To heal as we should.
But look how,
With all our hungers,
Our needs stretched
On the steely breeze of existence,
We do so love to feel
The warmth of safe harbour
Whenever we find it

I wish you much success. It is deserved.

I’ve read some of your writing and just wanted to tell you that you’re truly inspiring :) I’ve had a thing for poetry for as long as I can remember, and now that i’m growing spiritually and finding “truth” poetry I am just so happy! lol

Susan Fanoga-Cobrado on New Poem – as the years…

You are in your best element Scot, when you express your thoughts freely out of the box, when the emotions flow smoothly in the fluid lines that are not controlled by rules.  The poet becomes himself undictated by poetic rules or styles and this recent poem “As the Years….”  did just that. Kudos and God bless.

Abin Chakraborty on New Poem – as the years…

Languid meditative flow of thoughts, captures the lazy twists and turns of our nostalgic ruminations.

Suzy Que on New Poem – as the years…

Loved how you ended the poem – Room to stretch, to grow, to dream… – that for me pretty much summed up the essence of life.

Shari J LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – as the years…

I believe that as we grow older, the pace of life reminds us that nature is out of our control, as is most of the world that surrounds us.  Perhaps that is why we harken back to days of youth when ignorance was blissful and surrender was sweet.

Cressida de Novam on New Poem – as the years…

The trials and tribulations of life together with the wonder all accentuated as one reaches closer to the end of it. Well expressed!

Lots to ponder about, Scott.:)

“Together we all live every moment On the very brink; The razor’s edge Of ecstasy or disaster. But rarely meet either, of course…”

Great lines! so true, I guess. So often our dreams are unrealized.

Mary Kling on New Poem – as the years…

Visiting you once more on this poem today.  Really makes me think again about many things.  In my earlier comment I was moved by the fact that we lived on the brink of both disaster and ecstasy. That still is the thing that most strikes me about this poem.  Another thing I am struck by is the change from the blissful balmy day to harsher weather as time goes on.  Wishing you a good week, Scott!

Loiriam Jimenez on New Poem – as the years…

Beautiful written poem, Scott. It’s sad but the bad always happens for a reason.

Don MacIver on New Poem – as the years…

Beautifully insightful, a grace of words and meaning Scott.

Don MacIver on The Maya

Remarkable images Scott. Some day I truly wish to take a similar trip to such faraway wonders of this great earth of ours. Historic structures have always fascinated me, perhaps given that my father was an architect and most of our travels in my parents’ day always included viewing buildings of architectural and historic significance. Thank you for sharing these wonderful images.

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – as the years…

Thank you so much for your words. As I said before, the words of your poems are a calm and a soothing refuge to me. As a Literature student and teacher, we analyze and discuss many poems applying various theories of Derrida, Freud, Lacan, Eagleton, Kafka, Camus , Barthes and the list is endless. Academic circles concentrate only on these theories and majorly preoccupied with dissecting it like a rat in the laboratory but at the end what really matters is the words that truly touch the soul of a person. That’s why Shakespeare, Keats and Wordsworth remain in the hearts and linger on like a sweet perfume long after the book is up the shelf. Your poems are surreal and have the quality of classics. The taste and the fragrance of your poems lingers like a beautiful aura. Life forces ebb and flow, watching life is like being a spectator of one of the plays of Absurd Theatre. We are all like Sisyphus, we need to love our destiny and suffering is a choice. After all… life is full of sound and fury signifying nothing. As you say in one of your poems “…even the smooth stones ache… with stories of their own.. in the shuddering light of the day” Beautiful.

Joanny Rowe on Order Options

Lovely presentation  of your newly released poetry book,  you have some very memorable quotes: “to dazzle in the light …if only for the moment…”  ” how stubborn life is, it clings like silver to our souls”… Your poetry – is a place where one can forget the outside world, and move through space where time does not intrude and wraps us in a cocoon of warmth and comfort, and peaceful serenity.

Best joanny hat!

Leigh-Ann Brodber on New Poem – as the years…

What I love about poems is that they don’t have to be formatted in any particular way. They’re the poet’s own to shape, mold and style whichever way they please. It’s also one of the ultimate ways to show self expression. And that’s why I chose to review Scott Hastie’s recent poem “As the years…” Poems can be tricky little bastards sometimes and what may appear to be the obvious theme of the poem to the poet, might not be the same theme that the reader interprets. So, if any one has a different interpretation to “As the years…”, I’m always open-minded. Just leave a comment and I’ll be sure to check it out. With that said, reading “As the years…” was quite moving for me… I mean, the poem – to me – is all about change (something that I’m all too familiar with). But not just any change. Scott Hastie speaks about change in your everyday lives while linking it to the finicky environment. He talks about change as if it were a ticket to the biggest event of our nugatory lives. As if being able to enjoy the rays of sunshine and the windy days are worth the price of change. Worth the price of uncertainty. On top of this, Hastie uses phrases such as “Making daylight of passion” that just bring out the metaphor freak in me. So much so that I actually created a list of my favourite phrases from this poem: “And energy bends time, Making daylight of passion” “Every crease, In this landscape of ours” “Most ancient of glacial rushes, That caused the first scar” “…terrain of the soul” “An uncomfortable truth” “The razor’s edge, Of ecstasy or disaster” With the aid of these phrases, I’m not only shown how change affects us but also get to see it firsthand. If you’ve read any of Scott Hastie’s poems, you’d know that he’s one for extensive use of metaphors. And which is something that has made him one of my favourite poets so far. Along with Lee Haydn Straight, of course.

Scott, you have such a way with words that, in your combinations, they reach deeper than they would in someone else’s. Thank you for a poem to treasure!

Adda Leah Davis on New Poem – as the years…

I’ve always loved to read about the Mayan culture and learn about it, but I’d never seen these pictures. I find it amazing that the stones fits so perfectly as did the stones in the sphinxes in Egypt. It makes me think that the flood in Noah’s time created the continents that we know today since there are so many similarities found in areas so far apart in distance.

I loved the picture it painted in my head.

Mary Kling on New Poem – as the years…

What resonated with me strongly, Scott, was the mention of how we all live in the moment….on the very brink of either ecstasy or disaster.  Yes, I think this is true.  And yes, we all want that warmth on our skin!  Nicely penned, Scott!

Aria Ligi on The beauty of Meso America

I think these are my favorites of your new photos as they have such wide variety in theme and the colors just burst out at you. From the common people in the market selling their wares, to a parrot whose green plumage is verdant and velvet like, there is a richness that brings you into every aspect of the lives these people must live, in nature, day to day happenings and life. Thank you for sharing Scott!

Aria Ligi on The Maya

These pics are simple, and convey the richness and being that were the Maya. One can feel the warmth of the air, and the roughness of each stone in gazing upon these altars to time.

Aria Ligi on New Poem – as the years…

This piece comes to speak of beauty, but still ever so softly asks questions that are deep and moving, without ever offending or scorning the reader. This is important, because you want to give the reader something to chew on, without insulting their sensibilities.

And to think that Every crease In this kind landscape of ours Was once a vibrant river of sorts, Even if it was only the briefest, Most ancient of glacial rushes That caused the first scar.

And

For much as it maybe An uncomfortable truth, That most of us Would far rather renounce,

then the final:

That goes with the ticket though, Doesn’t it? The price of admission to so much: The chance of such warmth on our skin,

Well done and worth the time to read.

Thanks always Scott.

Matthew J. Geiger on New Poem – each of us…

Your writing vividly describes our need for each other by subjecting us to what it means to be physically vulnerable to nature.  In doing so, I think you make readers experience our inherit fear of our natural condition and pursuit of safety in numbers.  In short, you do an excellent job of depicting our motivation for building great civilizations; humanity is insecure.

Matthew J. Geiger on Sunset in Africa, over the Kenyan coast…

This sunset reminds me of one I experienced on nearby Lake Erie.  It makes me think about how close distant places like Kenya actually are. For all the differences we humans have, we have much in common.  We all live under the same star and sustain ourselves on the same atmosphere.

Neena Sharma on New Poem – each of us…

Scott Sir, you have truly captured through this poesy the crux and core of all human beings, which is the soul and its divine connection with another luminous star like sentient and omniscient energy called GOD. Though formless, bodiless like God,we as souls are a dot in virtues( as is depicted in your poem..as an orphan); whereas, God is an ocean of virtues and powers. We are weak, vicious, not all virtuous unlike the supreme soul. We are orphans without Godly powers and timely succour.Your great poetry carries a deep subtle, figurative meaning, which could not be easily fathomed by an ordinary being. A very sensitively written poem. All the same, one could identify oneself as a soul with its innate attributes of peace, power, purity, truth, love , bliss and knowledge;to dispel our weakness or gloom looming large at any point of time,in life. Great going,as always…

Keep up the good work! Divine regards Neena

Slipcover, author’s photo – everything is gorgeous. And the writing is passionate, unaffected, touching – so relatable. As I’ve said before, you truly do ‘get’ your readers. The good you are doing by bridging artist with reader at the touch of a pen is immeasurable.

Aria Ligi on New Poem – each of us…

While this poem may seem to some as pollyanna like- it also holds deepening truths about the choices we make, and how and if we choose to embrace what is given versus what we choose to express. The first paragraph:

Each of us orphans On this dizzy sphere, Initially cast adrift Without a mooring point.

recalls to each of us that though we are birthed from parents, even if they are lucky enough to be a solid unit, that in the end, we are still orphans cast off in the ship of life. This could be the end, but it is not, as the poet tells us he is still yearning for:

For that abandonment again More than anything else, And the opportunity it offers,

Again the idea of choices is put before us, and what we do with them, once we set sail on this thing called life.

Well done.

My God, you are a stunning poet!

I’ve read so many of your poems on the website but nothing prepared me for the breathtaking body of work this book holds. I was literally blown away.

All I can say and truly mean is that for me you are the next Seamus Heaney and that is the ultimate compliment I can give to a poet – Seamus was such a great writer! I hope your work will gently but surely move on the Nobel path, my dear Scott.

Thank you for this book, thank you for writing it. Once read, it becomes more than a gift – it becomes a lifelong friend. One that you can turn to in the depths of the night and ask for light.

Don MacIver on Reviews

As a writer and poet I am forever exploring the writings of those who share the beauty, elegance and tapestry of our language, its interpretations, its remarkable depth and the emotional connection that is realized from the far reaching dynamics of poetic verse.

I came upon the writings of Scott Hastie some time ago now and am forever touched by this poet’s sense of our gift of life. Scott shares his passion for the written word here by offering that his “focus is to share light and hope, creatively and spiritually, to seize and celebrate the extraordinary opportunity of being alive.” Indeed, Scott Hastie has bejeweled the many splendors of this world and our brief yet remarkable time on this earth.

Experience his words here. Engage in this man’s heart sounds through the pages of ‘Meditations’, words that bring together heart, mind and soul, timeless verse that transcends the human spirit, uplifting and inspirational in its delivery. Experience…Scott Hastie’s journey in verse.

Scott, your work is beautifully evocative, full of deep imagery and assonance, quiet spaces for letting the words weave their tapestry. I have been deeply impressed with the quiet moments in your verse that speak to the soul.

Brian E. Wakeman on New Poem – climb…

Yes, I agree about the comment on parental advice… Almost like the “my son” sections in the book of Proverbs in the Bible. I was prompted to ask, ‘who says so’ with post modern scepticism, but the truth or meaningfulness depends on the response of the reader, on how it appeals and impacts, on its validity to the reader. Further the musical quality, and the images that impress on the mind are memorable.

Aria Ligi on Reader Comments

I was delighted to read Scott’s new book, “Meditations” and so while being acquainted with his work, was happy to further discover this lovely volume. From the beginning: One has the feeling that they are setting foot within the poet’s realm and vision of life. His many insights ask us to ponder the connectivity ourselves to one another: “ Not damage for its own sake, But an attempt to sever connections, To abandon convention, obligation. To escape pattern.” To : “Two souls clinging on tight To an endless arc of solitary dreams, Illuminated only fitfully by love and loss.”

To his biographic poem entitled “Sylvia and Ted”

“I can imagine that, Before she left him, They might have often sat indoors, Hidden away from the awful truths They had uncovered, Watching the heat from the fire, Cast in germ-like shadows, Rise slowly up the wall.”

And his sweet homage to Marilyn Monroe:

“Wounded? Yes, hopelessly so. But with a soul that, despite any indignity, Remained stubbornly luminous.

Radiant, sparkling, Diamond-lit, effervescent. Such a glorious woman, But no ingénue, Who somehow, it seemed, Already felt and knew too much of life.”

Each stanza will resonate with all who partake of them.

“Remember that everyday you still awake, With good fortune and opportunity, To the gathering warmth of a new day.”

His poems are not only packed with insight, but steeped in undertones– layers of meaning and truth.

This is a volume to read and then re-read at leisure, because there are so many jewels sewn within.

This strike a chord in me right now, Scott. Remembering the power of choice, the way we can change our own attitudes…that is a freedom no one can take from us.

Tony Maude on New Poem – such things…

Hi Scott,

I missed this first time around, so thanks for bringing it back to dVerse. Just as evil triumphs when good people do nothing, so peace is destroyed when we leave everything in the hand of those who only want to destroy it.

Really enjoyed reading your work.

Brian Miller on New Poem – such things…

Nice Scott…well worth another look…This time it was the losing sight of your own soul and how even then it does not lose sight of you…

Mary Kling on New Poem – such things…

Scott, thanks for posting this for dVerse today.  I do think it fits the theme of peace well.  Despite all that is going on in the world, we DO need to find a way to ‘rise above’

Inspiration to rise above A mass of malignant possibilities And, in so doing, remind each other of Just what the human spirit is capable of

and to see what IS possible in the trying.  We won’t know unless we ‘give it our best shot’ and see what can be accomplished.  I liked your last line.  Yes, the choice is always ours.  We each have to decide our direction & live with our choice.

Claudia Schoenfield on New Poem – such things…

There may well be times in your life

When you lose sight of your soul.

But, trust me, it can always see you…… That really hit me..think we all have such times…and good to know that there still is connection, even if we think there isn’t..

Great lines Scott sir..I loved it,especially the following, which ends on a positive note, while discovering and fathoming your inner self.. :

Your fate though Is not nearly as tentative Or parlous as this. For, along the oft fearful And meandering trail, The miasm of life, Your hallowed soul within Still offers you clear direction And fragrant sanctuary.

Neither a reverie ,nor a dream , but a realistic approach… sir! Great going! Congrats…

A wise and wonderful poem! I could use it as a mental walking stick whenever I find myself teetering at the edge of life’s sorrows and pain.

Hi Scott!
Lovely picture!
Were you in India? When?
Scott says: Thanks – Yes I had a wonderful trip several years ago visiting Dehli, Agra, Jaipur and other parts of Rajastan, as well as a few days in the foothills of the Himalayas at Shimla – all very memorable and left an enduring impression on me. I tell all my friends here in the West – if you were to have just one holiday in your life, then it should be India! A whole dfferent world full of wonders and so much energy…

Hi Scott,

Another one of your remarkable poems! You know I think I should blame you for easily sending me to dreamland and not wanting to come out for a while. All your poems I have read till date have this magical quality about them that finding exact words, to pin the emotions your poems generate, is quite difficult.

That’s one of the biggest reason I’m usually too scared to leave a comment. Why there aren’t any social media buttons on your website?

My favorite lines:

“Climb too enthusiastically Into a mirror of the self And you may never get out, Never escape the greedy maze Of its seductive stare.”

Best Wishes!

Scott says: Thank you Priya, Sorry about the lack of SM buttons on the site – it is being looked into, I understand…

Jennifer Westecott on New Poem – climb…

Hi Scott,

Your poems are beautiful and powerful.  I can feel the symbolism and depth in each one.  You have a real talent for the art of poetry.  I look forward to reading more from you.

Dr. Jelka Samsom on New Poem – climb…

Dear Scott,

As you entitled this poem “climb”, reading the different stanzas felt like different branches of a tree to me, branches I have climbed in the past.

Yes, when I was younger I looked a bit too much in the lonely mirror called Narcissus and gazed at my sweet, yet untouchable image. I had a lonely childhood. Some years later, I decided I needed to change and I climbed up to a higher branch and gave as much love I had to give to all the leaves around me. I wanted to give to them the affection I had so dearly missed myself when I was a little leave myself.

Still, all this giving made me feel so tired and even more so because the leaves became hungrier and hungrier. At some point I finally realised that I had given more than I had to give. I very painfully and full of guilt reached out for a higher branch. I had spread my love without direction and finally, not only knew but also felt the reality of being: “to consume or to be consumed”.

Scott, you reminding me and all of us of the clear direction we have inside of us, is a tremendous comfort. Life, in all its various aspects, can be very confusing and lonely at times and people have so many opinions….. Kindly telling us to trust our inner guide and to listen to it and cherish it, is something I am beginning to believe in but you have made that belief even stronger. I will reread your poem ever so often, in order to keep this positive feeling alive!

Thank you, Scott!

Rebel Sowell on New Poem – climb…

It seems we have always been climbing toward our higher selves, but it’s something we don’t realize until we are farther along the path. Beautiful words of wisdom.

Bonnie Roberts on New Poem – climb…

This is my favorite of your poems so far.  I like its simple, but not so simple to follow wisdom.  Your tone is soft and human, understanding the pitfalls of the ego all too well, having known them very well.  For those of us who have sought the glories of the ego, the “place” you describe in “The Climb” is truly peaceful, a release, a kind of heaven on Earth.

Joel Savage on New Poem – climb…

‘Climb’ is an inspirational poem, with a significance of caution to life. At times we sit in limbo, not knowing what tomorrow may bring. Reading ‘Climb’ gives hope that one can make it with efforts, no matter how the situation is. I quote

“Then, at whatever point in your life,

You have a way forward,

A purpose to begin.

This a beautiful poem for both teenagers and adults.

Richard Havenga on New Poem – climb…

Scott:

Your words carry purpose and warmth with clear direction. You display a “light within”, and you definitely “give the best that you can”. Nice harvest for your readers to digest.

I liked the poem but one question Scott. Can you convey the same thought in fewer words. I found myself getting lost in certain sections..’the hallowed soul..’ is one

Scott says: As ever, thanks for your thoughts Shriram – I will write to you about the hallowed soul segment…

…what a golden web you weave, Scott! You hook the reader from the very first. and I find myself anxiously clinging to every word, seeking hope, wisdom, and solace, a truthful path, and you give it all and I love it all, but the 5th stanza, starting with “follow its lead” particularly resonates with me. Marika O’Baire on New Poem – climb…

Dear Scott:  Looks like you have received many positive comments.  I enjoyed a kind of breathless falling into your poem after the first stanza, which seemed to set up a thoughtful place to start.  I am not sure by the last stanza where you are going and if the poem is actually longer. I enjoy your use of “miasm”.  Is your “distil” really “distill”? Just wondered.  This may be a difference in culture.  I look forward to your revision of this piece for the feeling you deeply need to share with us provoked by your first stanza.  As always I look forward to your work.  Thank you for this, Marika

Scott says: Marika – thanks for these thoughts… ‘Distil’ is the pure English language spelling, to which we add a second ‘l’ only when followed by a vowel, as in verb usage: ‘distilled’ Interesting point you make about the ending, which I had indeed been reflecting upon and will write to you about…Thanks again for your careful consideration of my work.

These poems are lovely and have a sense of meter, (which is the dance of life) and quality. It is important to make art and at the same time have meaning. Scott’s poetry (and photographs as well) do both these things. They are a joy to read. I mean this sincerely since so much of what I read these days is fake poetry (no structure at all). I look forward to reading more.

Nivedita Yohana on New poem – Every new day…

Dear Scott It would be lovely to see you in person one day and talk to you. You are an amazing person with such intensity and depth. I am sure your poetry works wonders on your readers. In spite of all the pressure, to produce such beautiful poetry is itself a task. Shows remarkable capacity for tranquility. In Indian philosophy we often put emphasis on detachment, as in American transcendentalism of Emerson and Thoreau. For any creative endeavor it is important  “to be in the world but not of it”. Not many achieve it but you absolutely educe this virtue of age old wisdom.

I am working as an Assistant Professor of English Literature at a College in Mysore and working on my Thesis “Postmodernist Narratives in the Poetry of George Bowering and Frank Davy”. I have already written a dissertation on Canadian-Jewish poet A.M. Klein.

Just being in the  present gives us solace and solitude. It reminds me of Keats’s words on negative capability “when a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason”  Your poems gives me enormous inspiration and in fact act as a catharsis to unshackle me. You are awesome and awe-inspiring.

Very, very comforting, Scott, just like many others have said before me. Thank you!

Dr Jelka Samsom on two love poems

Two love poems and two sides of a coin? One poem expressing strength and hope and the other a feeling close to despair and taken together, the two poems offer an honest and beautiful description of what unconditional love entails?
Or are the two poems to be regarded as separate from one another?
“Beautifully intimate”, if I may quote Don Maclver, RPA but also wonderfully enigmatic.

Vinita Agrawal on New poem – such things…

A beautiful gentle poem that splits apart the curtains of desolation to show that no matter how great the pain, human spirit prevails and triumphs over all odds. Your poem had o many high points Scott, but I particularly adored these lines:

Legacy though, Like the light of love In any infant’s eye, Remains impervious To any such violation, Seeding aspirations that live on. ** A really lovely write that acts like a balm on tortured senses, that brings succour to ravaged hearts and quite simple speaks of better days and better choices in times when the spirit is broken and sad. Loved it!

A wonderful poem, dear Scott. It has its depth. Sometimes life is very difficult. Soul lost in the darkness, which would like to return and they cannot do so. And shining souls filled with celestial love.

Milan Schmotzer on New poem – such things…

Gloomy poem, but truthful. A person can carry the good in its heart, whether as a ardent zealot (zinc is hard but yielding) or meek, calm and humble of heart.

Mac McGovern on Writing

Just wanted to say your poetry is superb. I would love to write a recommendation of how much I like your poetry and appreciate the opportunity to experience your work. It would be an honor to support your work.

Gilda Evans on New poem – such things…

Lovely poem, Scott! We have all fought our own demons, and I agree – the choice is always ours as to how we respond to these situations. Bravo!

Uma Bhurtah on New poem – such things…

Scott, congratulations for the beautiful poem you posted on your website. One of my friends always taught us a quote : “Expect the unexpected”. And the poem totally details the meaning of that quote. We should always be prepared to the unexpected at any time of our lives, because life is like a circus made with too many unexpected things, which may be as well positive as well negative. I myself faced so much good and bad surprises in life for enough being aware of that.

Ayala on New poem – such things…

Powerful and touching!

Kelly on New poem – such things…

Yes, I agree, it can always see you… how easily we forget that at times.

Pamela Sayers on New poem – such things…

Scott, beautiful and inspirational piece. I want to print this and put it up in my classroom. So many things get lost along this path in life, that we can see still vivid in the eyes of the young. Thanks for this.

Brian Miller on New poem – such things…

The part that really grabbed me in this Scott is in the middle somewhere how everything can be spoilt when left to the those already lost… The lines on losing sight of the soul but it seeing you are great as well… Very nicely done Sir…

Taylor Fulks on New poem – such things…

Scott…

Well, I said I would visit, so I did. I have a passion for poetry, so the effort was not as altruistic as yours…again, I thank you.

WOW! This is so powerful, yet comforting in a subtle way. This passage is where I was as a child, though not old enough, or wise enough to recognize it as such…

“There may well be times in your life

When you lose sight of your soul.

But, trust me, it can always see you…

A hallowed frequency within

That, even in your darkest hour,

You can always turn to.

Knowing that,

When the tortures of self doubt

And the bitterest of all tears

Are in your eyes,

This choice remains forever yours.”

The choice to claw my way out of the darkness, or be ruined forever.

Thank you for sharing your gift with me. I has made me FEEL. Bravo my new friend.

~Taylor Fulks

Marta Merajver-Kurlat on New poem – such things…

Scott, this poem is precisely what I need at my present juncture. Besides its literary qualities, which of course do not surprise me, besides the elegant turn of phrase and delicate passage from the black depths of the soul to the illuminating reminder that “this choice remains forever yours,” it talks to me in a prophetic way, as if you knew what you cannot possibly know. Thank you, my dear friend, for this beacon of hope.

Jacquéline Touche on New poem – such things…

You are doing a tremendous Job, Scott. Keep Touching One Heart at a time and Uplifting Souls including mine. Be Blessed and continue to have a Great Summer.

A poem that all of us who live consciously can relate to… let sadness take but a moment of your time and allow happiness to pervade in the next and the next.

Shriram Sivaramakrishnan on New poem – such things…

This is a beautiful poem…nice ending!

Edward Wilkes on New poem – such things…

In life we have our ups and downs; I agree.
In life we can find our way and we can overcome the worst of things.
We can also become consumed by others, of good or bad; either of which we at times allow to take the focus off our own self. And yes even in our darkest hour we always have our own self to turn to when there is no other. Our own self usually turns out to be our own best bet. Self doubt to me is that voice in my head that seems to be there from time to time to disrupt my dreams from moving forward. This voice is a voice of defeat (Self-Defeat)but this voice, I have learned to tune out and tune into the voice of reason, where self reliance takes over. Very good piece, my poet friend. I’m glad I took the time to read this.

Micki Peluso on New poem – such things…

Scott, this poem especially touched me, since I lost my 14-yr-old daughter, Noelle, years ago in a vehicular homicide by a drunk driver. Your words, so beautifully said, spoke straight to my heart and soul.

Laura Laveglia on New poem – such things…

Hi Scott,

Roman Long-Gonzalez on New poem – such things…

Scott, what a cherished poem   this is. I appreciate the honest tone. What a genuine gift you have!

Richard Havenga on New poem – such things…

Scott:

Your writing absolutely contains “this light of love”, and therefore your Poetry becomes your Legacy, “seeding the aspirations” of those who read your work. Giving us the choice, the urge, to rely on the spirit within us.

Mary J. McCoy-Dressel on New poem – such things…

I enjoy reading your poetry, Scott. This is beautiful, touching.

Loiriam Jimenez on New poem – such things…

This poem is sad but an effort to go through these difficult times. Thank you for sharing.

Mac McGovern on The path ahead is always clear…

This picture is amazing. As I look, the circle of light with the sun’s rays penetrating, reminds of a place where I could go, step into the circle and talk to God.

Thank you for posting. With your permission, I would love to use this image in one of my inspirational poetry pieces.

My very best to you always.

Joanna Lee on Two love poems…

Loved these lines:

“And it lingers still like fire burn,

Like lamp light in my being.”

Such a bittersweet piece, full of both longing and joy.

Corey Mesler on Recent Writing

Scott – Your work is very strong and your website is beautiful. I hope writing enriches your life the way it does mine, if that’s not a too high-falutin’ way to phrase it.

Sayed Rohani on Writing

I enjoyed your gallery and your poems. They all reflect good taste, good feelings. Mindful people like you, I am sure, will contribute meaningful things to the world.

Sushmita Sadhu on Two love poems…

I particularly like Two Love Poems and Blessed. You are very simple and fluid in your expressions, yet shaded with a spiritual hue. I like the feel and design of your website very much too!

Lynn Mottram on Writing

I love the photograph of the trees and your poetry too. In fact I think it is a marvellous site.

MoMoMuzak on Every new day

Jennifer Westecott on Recent Writing

I had a chance to read a few of your poems and they are beautiful.

Otis Farmer on Reader Comments

I agree with Marilyn – poets are painters, each or your words a brush stroke, every verse a vivid flower, a dancing butterfly, the sun rising majestically, and setting in glory. Such poems are a memory the reader savors when visiting the poet’s realm.

Otis Farmer on The path ahead is always clear…

Scott, I can envision meeting Merlyn strolling along this path. What amazing conversations would the old magician conjure on such a fanciful morn?

Otis Farmer on Summer Swan at Stowe, England

Ah, but Saeeda, what if the swan is male, study it’s gaze, it just might be returning to the love of his life, as she anxiously awaits, upon their woven nest, warming the fruit of their love.

Charlene Truxler on New Poem – needing love…

I was captured by this poem.  The intensity of emotion that you convey with your words is wonderfully deep and inoculating.  The one thing that struck me was the lack of a title.  I know that it is not mandatory to have a title, but with the immense pull your writing has, I feel that a title would only further the strength of the bond between a reader and the works.

Adda Leah (Addie) Davis on New Poem – blessed…

I can’t say that I am an expert on poetry. I know what I like and what moves me in some way and this poem did.

Loiriam Jimenez on Recent Writing

I like the fourth poem. It is beautiful to stay connected and far more nasty to disconnect…Beautiful write, Scott!

Loiriam Jimenez on Recent Writing

The second poem is of course many want to achieve the success and not wanting to let anyone put them down. Good poem, Scott. I will read next poem soon.

Lynn Mottram on The path ahead is always clear…

I love this picture, it gives off a heavenly light, it reminds me of a poem I wrote some years ago called “Cathedral Of Trees”

Adda Leah Davis on New Poem – blessed…

Mr. Hastie, I’ve worked two days at a festival in an attempt to sell my books. It wasn’t a good venue. Book selling is almost like playing poker, I think. Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose, but since my publisher is small and doesn’t have funds for major marketing I have to pound the beat. I suppose I’m not really shy anymore, but still feel out of my comfort zone with strangers.  I really like your poem Blessed. I felt it spoke to the longing for the infinite; of having a sense of a greater and broader vista than we have yet been blessed to see. We do catch glimpses occasionally or at least I feel that I have.

Debbie Berk on Summer flowers, freshly picked from an English garden…

Very lovely flowers.

Jackline Brobe on Recent Writing

I do enjoy your page and your sweet things on here…

Victoria C. Slotto on Two love poems…

These are both lovely, flow well. I like the conversational use of the 2nd person in that first one, and don’t we all wonder about those loves long gone (at least those of us who’ve been around for a while)

Mary Kling on Two love poems…

Scott, this is a wonderful poem of mature love, a love that has endured the test of time, endured the ups and the downs, and still remained strong.  You are a fortunate man indeed!  Beautifully written from the heart.

Vinita Agrawal on Two love poems…

A tender, velvety poem. You have this enviable ability to produce a heart-stealing line towards the end of your poems which elevate the verse to immortality.  ‘Together we live to the point of tears…’ was the heart-stealer here. I loved it. I am sure millions will be able to identify with the nostalgia of an old love in your poem. The poem may be yours Scott but it belongs to all. What could be more beautiful than that!

Vinita Agrawal on Summer Swan at Stowe, England

Serene, despite the riot of green! Well captured!

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – blessed…

A very finely crafted poem Scott and superbly conceived! Through your work compassion will become the hallmark of every sensitive soul that reads it because your words teach so much! While the message is universal, your craft is yours and yours alone – distinct, timeless and delicate. As always with your poems, I was once again blown away by the last few lines: ‘Feel the stars ache kindly,
As they wait patiently
For us.

Vinita Agrawal on Summer flowers, freshly picked from an English garden…

Beautiful! Ah! The layers of pink, a shot of red and a divine dot of cream in the centre. Breathtaking and utterly fresh! Thank you Scott!

Joanna Schmotzer on Two love poems…

Laura Bailey on Two love poems…

“Together we live to the point of tears / I wouldn’t want it any other way.”  is such a beautiful ending.  I t sums up all the trials and tribulations of so many relationships.  Yet, despite all of this would any us have it any other way?  Wonderful writing as always Scott!

Marta Merajver-Kurlat on Two love poems…

The bitter-sweet alternation in both poems lingers in the mind and makes me go back to them over and over again. What a magnificent way of turning something we all share -the vicissitudes of love- into poignant, original poems despite the fact that so many others have chosen to write about the same topic! Yours stand out and will be remembered. Bravo!

Pamela Sayers on Two love poems…

Scott, first of all, I know when I come here to read your work I won’t be disappointed. I love both of these pieces, the first on lost love, and the second on love that endures through time. Wonderful.

Asim Kumar Paul on Two love poems…

Ah! that basket full of
Fresh hewn promises,

Shari LeKane-Yentumi on Two love poems…

A true sign of mature and unconditional love is one that recognizes that things will change, for better or for worse, and that love will persevere, as you poignantly stated, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

I love the photo of the forearm with the bracelet – a symbol of love and connectedness.

Jacqueline Dick on Two love poems…

The ability to give and receive love, I believe, is man’s greatest achievement..Loves come and go and they are all valuable…but we never forget that one great love…and you have etched that here…permanently and beautifully.”you know, I give you my love as best I can” resonates…and comforts me…dispelling those thoughts of what better could I have done…there is no better…we love as we can, when we can.  The two poems are so beautifully evocative and thoughtful of love’s flame.  Thank you so much for sharing. xo

Ayala on Two love poems…

I adore the love poems ~  I always think we should remember and hold on to how it all started as a flame ~   As to the second one, I like the kinship being precious and Of what my labours long to proffer you ~  Beautiful words ~

Mary on Two love poems…

I really liked this poem, Scott.  So true…there are always new lovers somewhere in the world, discovering love anew for the very first time.  Sometimes as time goes on that love doesn’t turn out to be absolutely perfect, but so true that most often one does the best one can.  You have really spoken truth in this poem….the way life is, for many.

Todd Alan Kraft on Two love poems…

Some great feelings and ideas with some fine words to bring them to life. The final lines are gorgeous.

Carolyn Sames on Two love poems…

It’s a shame we all don’t give our love as best we can. I also thank you for this memory of my first love which was also, sadly, my last. So far, anyway.  Again Scott, beautiful words from a wonderful heart.

Brian Miller on Two love poems…

“together we live to the point of tears…” very nice line Scott…that first poem as well…the imagining of other lovers somewhere in the world part got to me a bit….Very nice, sir…

Loiriam Jimenez on Two love poems…

I love the beautiful word “ecstatic” in your poem. It is my favourite. The two lovers need to express each other the joyful excitement. Your two poems are beautiful and lovely.

Shriram Sivaramakrishnan on Two love poems…

Sweet molasses’ wherefore you got this juxtaposed imagery! nice one…

Shriram Sivaramakrishnan on Summer flowers, freshly picked from an English garden…

A bluebell would’ve added more to the charm…it is lovely nevertheless…

Scott says: A shame, Shriram I agree…  but seasonally three/four weeks late for that here – they tend to come with a great rush in woodland areas especially and then just melt away shortly before the first rose appears!

Mary J. McCoy-Dressel on Two love poems…

This—

“Two lovers are busy at play

– Ecstatic,

Aflame for the very first time.”

—Reminds me of my first love. I love this, Scott. Very nice.

Richard Havenga on Two love poems…

Scott:

Sheila Good on New Poem – blessed…

Scott,

What I was trying to say before I got button happy was, I can tell your words soothe people. Your poem certainly moved me, especially  the lines:

Feel the celestial gravity/In your soul,/  Feel the stars ache kindly, /As they wait patiently/ For us.”

Saeeda Naz on New Poem – you know…

A very deep poem, which no doubt, has a unique personal message to all who read it.

‘And because of that It’s so easy sometimes Yourself To just slide away, To melt, oh so slowly And unnoticed, Into some long yawning drift To nowhere left at all, Where real joy might still be shining.’

Is this about life after death or the isolation a writer experiences or perhaps, neither of these.  It would be nice to read what the poem meant to you, Scott.

Scott says: Thank you Saeeda, I will write to you personally to talk about the inspiration behind this poem…

Saeeda Naz on Summer Swan at Stowe, England

A beautiful composition.  I love the white swan against the varying shades of green background.  The picture appears to be composed entirely of different shades of green.  But there is something missing – where is this swan’s companion?  Is it a lonesome swan, looking for a mate?

(Dr) Jelka Samsom on New Poem – blessed

Dear Scott,

We have never met, nor have I met your readers. Yet I have a sense of “togetherness” between you, the dear people on your website and myself, as we all feel touched by your words. Words can do harm but words can connect too, as you so graciously make possible. Thank you!

Louis Cecile on New Poem – blessed

A nice melodic poem that mirrors the sweetness of the words. Looking deeper there is almost a sense of divinity in the message with reference to the light. The ending and sense of longing it portrays is quite moving.

This is cool. I really like this one a lot. It makes me smile as I think of all my friends on the web.

Mary on New Poem – blessed…

This is a fascinating poem really.  To think they have not met face to face.  But truly I do think one can get to know someone well and have compassion though never meeting face to face.  There are other ways of meeting  where one can sometimes get to know someone even better…..and deeper.  Example, I do think we can know people in the blogosphere very well..and yes, have compassion and any other human emotion.  These relationships can be as real as ‘real life’ relationships, I believe.

Laurie Kolp on New Poem – blessed…

Beautiful, Scott. Compassion is so important.

Lovely words Scott ~  I like the message of compassion and faith for the warm light to melt away our fears ~

Great to see you at the pub ~

Edward Wilkes on New Poem – blessed…

It is apparent that you are a deep thinker, Scott. You seem to have reached a high level of consciousness. You have captured the harsh reality about the human existence in easy to understand creative form. The visual imagery in your words are excellent. I really like the Words (celestial gravity of the soul) Nicely put… Beautiful poem, Scott!

Brian Miller on New Poem – blessed…

You too feel the celestial gravity of your soul…I like that scott…and the compassion even for one you have not met yet…not in reality and the joy it brings to you… Hey that is how I feel most Tuesdays…

Very nice work.  I love the phrase, “…celestial gravity.”  Great image there.

What happens in all of your poems is the simplicity of words and the depth of emotion. That’s worthy indeed, makes the reader feel the beauty of life. Thank you Scott!

Mahnaz Mohafez on Summer Swan at Stowe, England

It’s like a painting. Marvellous!

Susan Cobrado on New Poem – blessed…

Scott you are in your best element creating the visual images that effectively described life, as well as its variants, and that’s really too difficult to define anyway. But your poem achieved that effortlessly, giving us a clear picture of what you intend your readers to see or feel. Yes, despite the multiplicity of roles, despite the fact that we maybe strangers, we all share one common ground__ our soul orchestrating that celestial pull is nonetheless, not an alien thing to us humans, which makes our earth, one borderless world. Your poem did emphasize this. I just love the line “feel the stars ache kindly”, that’s a perfect personification, which summarizes the message in one swoop. Kudos Scott, more poems please.

Katherine Owen on New Poem – blessed…

Just feel the light/And let your heart warm,/Till all and every possibility/Of hurt and doubt/Simply melts away.

Amen to that. A beautiful poem. The title is wonderful, leading one to go back to examine why the poet isblessed. We find that it is not through worldly riches but through a capacity for compassion. This quality allows him to feel connected even with those he hasn’t met, to be aware of his Oneness with all- both in the humanity of our tears and our unity in the Light that is. And the tears… when we look more closely, are not tears about the problems of this world (though we suspect those too are included), but tears of longing to know ourselves as the Light. Wonderful.

Rebecca O’Donnell on New Poem – blessed…

As Anne says in Jane Austen’s Persuasion, “We live in a great age of poetry.” Scott’s words weave the same soul magic as the greats.

Shari LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – blessed…

Congratulations, Scott, on the book!  “Blessed” is a fine example of the spiritual quality of your poems that connect your readers to you through shared, positive karma.  Even your photo has an ethereal quality as you appear to be floating above!  Simply magical.

I profoundly love your poetry. It has such depth and intensity and am certain that many would benefit from it. The images used are interwoven with varied intricacies as a wonderful piece of artistic brocade. Your poetry is like a Maypole around which many nuances, symbols and imagery dancing a beautiful dance and wrapping it to create a work of art. Such poetry continues to inspire me.

Ian Morrison on New Poem – you know…

Just love the way that you can bring the reader into the poem, the use of the English language to turn every stanza to a new and exciting way of thinking, is by far one of the greatest gifts that an excellent poet like yourself can deliver to us mere mortals.

Shriram Sivaramakrishnan on New Poem – as the wisest…

This poem is my favourite of yours. Just towers above the rest. The vividness of the imagery astonished me, particularly given the metaphysical nature of the concept..

Pamela Sayers on New Poem – you know…

Hi Scott, I came by looking for a new poem from you, and reread this, and I had a moment like this today over cake and coffee with a friend. I felt such a connection with her, that I hadn’t experienced before. It rather brought me round to look at things as of late a bit differently. Thank you.

Where was this taken?  Love it!

Scott says: Found it on my travels in Australia about three/four years ago now. It was in a gallery in Melbourne that showcased some of the very best tribal art and just caught my eye – seemed magical, true  and powerful to me…

Shriram Sivaramakrishnan on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

A hard hitting one with a steely voice. The tone is hard hitting than being considerate. An existential pursuit than a metaphysical one. Well done.

What an uplifting piece of art Scott. It speaks vividly to the intricate parts of the human in all of us.  Thank you so much.

Kim Nelson on New Poem – you know…

I appreciate the clarity you carry throughout the piece. Oftentimes longer poems get muddy and lose focus. You did not do that, here, so bravo! Your message, a tale of life’s experience, is direct and honest and open. I like that, too.

Ayala on New Poem – you know…

No longer an orphan to your soul- I love this, beautiful.

Alma Jane Sirbu from Romania on New Poem – you know…

I read your poem now and with my language, not very well, in english. But I do understand your soul and the sadness you feel for any loss, maybe not the first in your life and I do hope you recover, to be you… as you were, before the loss. Maybe I don’t understand very well, because the words in poetry, are more difficult to understand than prose.Sorry if I dont know very well English, but you give me the feeling you are there, in your writing… For me, this lesson is very pleasant.

Claudia Schoenfeld on New Poem – you know…

“An orphan to your soul

Melissa Fry Beasley on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Very brave piece. Daring. Strong subject matter.
I like it very much. Poetry is meant to move, intended to incite and excite. To inspire one to to think and FEEL.

But rather, what you feel inside,

That conditions your chances.

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – age gathers…

Mysore students would immensely be benefited by such a talent and virtuosity as yours.

Writing is therapeutic and free us from our own shackles. Its a blissful journey of the intellectuals midst of the chaotic world. I loved and was indeed deeply touched by your words:

“Be content to love, to dazzle in the light, If only for moments. And then be gone, with gladness in your heart, Before the creeping shadows Claim too much your sadness at leaving.”

Its such a poignant moment.  Probably the person should be truly enlightened to love with such detachment. Sadly we all fail and stalked by the scurrying shadows in the the dark alleys of our mind. I am reminded of  Keatsian philosophy  ” Capturing the fleeting moments of life and making it permanent in art”.. The emotions that dwell  in the person’s mind are engraved beautifully in your poetry. We all have “creeping shadows” which do haunt us.The only consolation is that a true love leaves no shadows on the contrary the memory is filled with perennial cascade of living water. I am also reminded of an Indian poet Rabindranth Tagore, a nobel laureate saying “…Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life.”

Melissa Fry Beasley on Writing

Scott, I most admire the intermingling of contemporary and classic. You are quite unparalleled there. You are very modern and edgy but have so beautifully tempered and refined it with your blissful eloquence and undaunting honesty. It makes for a very unique and interesting voice.
Well done again and again!!

Sondra Kelly-Green on New Poem – you know…

There’s so much unselfconscious intimacy here that there’s room for one to own it for oneself.  To tuck it away right where it’s needed most.  Thank you.  I did need it.  A thought, a moment, a poem to carry with along with me in this pageant—as “a small player in a major production”.  One who needs to meet a dear friend for an ale or two after every tough act.

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – you know…

A beautiful easy-flowing poem. I loved the way it began so very simply and then just got effortlessly deeper and deeper. Absolutely adored the 5th stanza. And loved this line as well – …an orphan to your soul

You have the mind of a philosopher and a true literary sense Scott, to be able to put words to what is natural and real.

Laura Bailey on New Poem – you know…

Your beautiful poem reminds us of our fragile nature in this environment that we call Earth.  These thoughts of yours remind me of the writings of Robinson Jeffers who was also quite aware of time limits in relation to Universal history and I mean the comparison in the best of all possible ways.  Great job Scott!

Rochelle Soetan on New Poem – anchored…

Amongst the many, this is one of your most profoundly moving poems yet. The sensation of Anchored is in itself, a clear and distinctive discovery of the NOW. “on a grid of possibilities, that is the architecture of happiness itself”……speaks to the soul’s awakening, the heart’s vulnerability for freedom, the mind’s desire for righteousness and accountability; being true to what matters and what to make of what is…and could be. So much love. So much light. Thank you for sharing you.

Wendy Waters on Recent Writing

From Shoguns patching wounds with gold to turning a busy corner and smiling into the eyes of a heart-stopping stranger whose soul wove threads of scarlet into yours eons ago to finding God in the eyes of a lover to realising with chilling certainty that every night in a lover’s bed has been a threesome, the third party — death. I cannot choose just one poem from this exceptional body of work…but couplets here and there that jumped from the illuminated pages like one of those Shogan seams of gold:

“splash of wildflowers that freckle the shaded tawny look of ancient meadows”

“music the gentle magic myths are made of”

“muddled by prescribed faith and the ever-shifting tolerances of others that will hasten to judge or condemn you”

“of those who were once staggering, bleeding and lost, who have somehow found their way back to their own angel within…”

“we too can repair our cracks with gold and glow again crazed by life, more beautiful than ever”

“patterns however intricate that fit, and between them gaps, potentials, knowing rhythms, inevitabilities that lock and spin…”

…to name but a very few!

Each and every poem a beautiful sermon in the highest temple of life! If your poems were read from the pulpit on a Sunday instead the dry old badgering and blaming there would be a flood of converts… Scott, your poetry takes me into a world at once familiar and yet marvellously unknown and even though I am a tourist in that magical terrain it’s a place I want to visit often.

Shari LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – however you may shine…

The key to understanding this poem, for me, lies in the first stanza.  “Infection is everywhere, and it’s a nonsense.”  I had to look up the meanings of nonsense to understand that it also signifies a genetic mutation, apropos to this context given the reference to sin as a plague with which we are all begotten.  More surreal is the nonsensical notion that “life is this circus” – implying extravagant foolishness or frivolity – “riddled with mistakes” – subject matter, behavior, or language that is foolish or absurd.  The multiple definitions of nonsense are layered throughout the entirety of the poem.  In fact, it can be argued that the final stanza, “So I can fall back skyward…safe to dream again” is nonsensical in and of itself until decoded for special meaning – the true meaning of the poem being the nature of love, the freedom to dream and the natural tendency to rise to the light and shine.

Todd Alan Kraft on New Poem – however you may shine…

I REALLY liked the final stanza. “So I can fallback skyward” is really grand.

It kind of sums up the frailty of time. Your poem begins with the limitless possibilities of inspiration to take us far in life and by the end of it, the poem itself inspires us to surrender to life’s beautiful flow. I am going to copy -paste this one a d save it as one of my favourites.

Liked your newest poem a great deal and thought the ending on the Sylvia and Ted poem was both strong and poignant. The newer poem reminded me of one by, I think, Louise Gluck. I can’t remember the title, so I’ll try to paste it in here. Vespers by ??? I know who and can’t remember Louise Gluck?

End of August. Heat like a tent over John’s garden. And some things have the nerve to be getting started, clusters of tomatoes, stands of late lilies—optimisms of the great stalks—imperial gold and silver: but why start anything so close to the end? Tomatoes that will never ripen, lilies winter will kill, that won’t come back in spring. Or are you thinking I spend too much time looking ahead, like an old woman wearing sweaters in summer; are you saying I can flourish, having no hope of enduring? Blaze of the red cheek, glory of the open throat, white, spotted with crimson.

Scott says: Can anyone out there identify this poem for us please?

Jane Hewey on New Poem – as the wisest…

“when late really doesn’t exist,/it is nowhere at all”  spoke loudly and cleanly to me. Another strong phrase which spoke to me, “So, proceed generously”   Very thoughtful/heartful work, Scott.

Claudia Schoenfield on New Poem – as the wisest…

Living in the moment without fear is a good thing…not an easy way to let go and get there… Happy Easter and enjoy your holidays…

Viv Blake on New Poem – as the wisest…

Your most telling phrase, for me, is something which is occupying this ailing elderly body:  “Inevitable too that the body,
With all its innate
And transitory desires,
Will always fail
Whilst the soul never will.”   I am truly thankful that so far the brain remains active and occasionally inspired.
Have a happy Easter.

Shari LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – as the wisest…

Your allusion to the seven deadly sins is clear, and the resurrection after-life coincides with your Easter message.  Very nice.

Laura Bailey on New Poem – as the wisest…

Wonderful advice told in a very beautiful  way.  Thank you for reminding us of the humility
of our fragile human existence. Patience is indeed a virtue and taking each day as it comes
with resilience and grace is easier said than done but something to strive for nonetheless.

Laura Bailey on The path ahead is always clear…

Thank you Scott for the beautiful photograph.  Have a very Happy Spring!

Sudakshina Bhattacharjee on New Poem – as the wisest…

Wow! What an utterly beautiful poem the wisdom of which has emanated from your deep, deep soul. I am blessed to have read this poem, particularly at this juncture of my life. Thank you Scott for sharing your enlightenment with us.:)

Rebel Sowell on New Poem – as the wisest…

So true. Carpe diem! When I look back at how I felt when I was young, I frittered away precious time by wishing for what I wasn’t. I strive not to do the same in these golden years. Lovely work as usual.

Mahnaz Mohafez on  New Poem – as the wisest…

Thoughtful as ever, your poem took me to the world of light & love. Thank you Scott!

Mahnaz Mohafez on The path ahead is always clear…

Scott, that last stanza is pure in its truth about any human who lives life. A wonderful read. Gorgeous writing.

Pamela

Grace on New Poem – be as bold…

This is beautiful and just clings to my spirit ~  Thanks for sharing them ~

Tony Maude on New Poem – be as bold…

Stopped in exactly the same place as Brian and had to consider, are they wounds I cause to myself, or to others. Perhaps both. The human spirit is both remarkably resilient and frighteningly fragile.

Jacquie Dick on New Poem – be as bold…

This is sheer, exquisite poetry….no favorite line…it is all awesome.  Wish I wrote it.  More!

Brian Miller on New Poem – be as bold…

Take care to tend to the wounds
Of your enthusiasm…ha…i drew up there to think before moving on and your progression from there is really cool…i say rage on little butterfly and dance now…we have no promise of more…

HisFireFly on New Poem – be as bold…

“How finite a liquid chamber
Any human being is”  yes, this.  Breath taking…

Jane Hewey on New Poem – be as bold…

Really beautiful, Scott.

Priyanka Sharma on New Poem – anchored…

Wonderful poem!

Marika O’Baire Kark on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Dear Scott:  I am not sure how you would like me to answer.  Thank you for the feeling of sharp bitterness this poem engenders for me.  And I am wondering if you can deeply relax and intuit how each of them felt being with the other and what the ‘awful truths’ might have been and whose they were.  This could all be the subjects of other poems.  Thank you for the work and time this one must have taken.  Marika

Scott says: Yes response is difficult Marika – I find that too… I admired both their work – Sylvia especially… The more talented of the two by far, in my opinion – but, almost inevitably, less durable in this world sadly… I think all one can do is reflect and wonder, in every sense of the word!

Marina Sofia on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

I like the way you use a lot of their own imagery in this poem (the hawk, the bloodied innards, all the cruelty of the animal world) to capture a sense of the inevitable.

Scott Says: Absolutely Marina – that lies very much at the heart of it…

kkkkaty on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

I must now read all there is about them..heart rendering write!

Patricia Spreng on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

elementary truths
That spear your insignificance
And stake it to the ground without pity,
haunting…

Rowan Taw on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

A sad reflective piece, which acknowledges well the influence of nature.

Laurie Kolp on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

This is haunting, really beautiful… love the diamonds and hawk at the end.

Kelly on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Oh my, I love this, when I was young Sylvia was my favorite poet… I’ve read all her work and everything else I could about her as well… you captured it all so well in these words. Loved germ-like shadows and diamond truth. Two haunted souls in that room by that fire.

Mahnaz Mohafez on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

They both taught us how to taste the sweet world of imagination.
“Come with all your heart”

Bjorn Brudberg on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Oh to be a fly on the wall trying to understand….

Brian Miller on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Really intriguing…the truth found and then the hiding away from it, much as they are hiding away from the truth of themselves…the whole time truth staring in at them through the window…really an interesting write…and interesting choice as well of who to write on scott….very nicely done…

Susan L Daniels on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Oh, wow.  Well done.  Sylvia P and Ted Hughes.

Henry Clemmons on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Two great poets with a sad story.  A mismatch to those on the outside, but we can only read their work to find what they had alone.  Yes, would have been a nice conversation.  Excellente.

Claudia Schoenfield on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Just recently I read a bit about both their stories…such a tragedy…really brought me almost to tears and both such outstanding artists.. cool write and esp. loved the hawk’s eye in the close there..

Candy Morrow on New Poem – Sylvia & Ted…

Sometimes there is sadness in truth.. I enjoyed this.

Mahnaz Mohafez on New Poem – be as bold…

“Here I am!” Not long ago, she felt God touched her heart by his light. Felt helplessness passed away, happiness was the gift of him, a happy hum of hope in her heart. ” Nothing else I do need” she said ” This will suffice!” What a good day it was when she heard God saying: ” Here I am! Don’t fear!”

Heaven on New Poem – pure naked…

I love the crafting of the bowl, full of secrets & magically shaped by ancient hands ~  Beautiful share ~

Brian Miller on New Poem – pure naked…

Nice…so is it a bell i take it? that is the image i get in reading it…the music getting even better with age…a cumulative alchemy….cool line that scott…

Scott says: Hi Brian – a bowl not a bell… Tibetan bowls have a long and sacred history see basic intro link –http://www.yowangdu.com/tibetan-buddhism/meditation/tibetan-singing-bowls-an-introduction.htmlOnce you get to know them, you could then comfortably live the rest of your life without ever having another more poetic object to write about… I am very fortunate to have a bowl of my own, which is between 500 – 2000 years old! they are impossible to date and made to an ancient formula that cannot be replicated today – involving an amalgum of various metals, including cooper, silver, gold, mercury etc. with each bowl handed tuned by fashioning the rim to a particular frequency that corresponds to various chakras in the body. They were also used for healing as well as religious and meditative practices… How special is that? I have been fascinated by them, ever since I learnt of their existence as a young man.

Anna Elizabeth Graham on New Poem – pure naked…

A gorgeous ode to singing bowls, the patina of time revealing the depth and breadth of their beauty.

Claudia Schoenfield on New Poem – pure naked…

Love how their voice gets stronger and clearer with the years…adding layers..love also how it stretches across time…begun by ancient hands..in the now but also reaching into forever..beautiful magical tunes indeed…

Susan L Daniels on New Poem – pure naked…

Oh, so beautiful, this resonating sacredly in the ether.

A very insightful and inspiring poem this is Scott-a thought provoking, versatile, rhythmic configuration of an event, or rather a journey called “life”

Brandee Shafer on New Poem – ambition…

Oh, I like this! I’m trying to live in the balance, I guess: trying to  lean into and enjoy my gifts while at the same time not getting too caught up in selfish ambitions. It can be tricky. Sometimes I spend too much time staring at the screen…

Brian Miller on New Poem – ambition…

nice…and wise as well…those that go deep and pull out the things of the heart…they are the ones i love to read…as you point out, many are afraid to go there…nice write…

Natasha Head on New Poem – ambition…

Imagine all the poems that would have never been written if not for the pain and uncertainty of life. Imagine if we could learn to treat it as the experience it is meant to be. This is a beautiful, powerful read!

Laurie Kolp on New Poem – ambition…

Yes we do return with bejeweled treasures when we explore the depths of our soul and we learns lot from those who have gone before us.

Steven Sutherland on New Poem – ambition…

I love how you nailed ambition! I will refer back to this poem frequently!

Andrea Many on Recent Writing

As an editor, I see a lot of work. This has impressed me. There is a gentle nature in your poetry; however, I still found myself immersed. There are a few things that I look for in the mechanics of poetry. One is punctuation… it is nearly flawless. Another is word choice- your work demonstrates both variety and originality. My best suggestion would be to try new styles in poetry. Free-verse has a resounding voice with your style, but readers like to see a variety in styles. I’m not sure if you have ever tried haiku or Shakespearean style sonnets but your written voice would go very well with either. Overall, I was moved by the gentle voice of your words that balanced perfectly with emotion.

Scott says: thanks for your detailed and thoughtful feedback Andrea – much appreciated… I find your understanding of where I am creatively to be quite disarmingly intuitive… Although I tend not to write haiku, they have long been a key inspiration – along with some concrete poetry of the 1970′s in terms of the effort to capture a distillation, within a spiritual sensibility… and I find myself slipping naturally into the form (tanka also..) from time to time in various short stansas. Re: WS – you have stumbled into one of my, till now, best kept secrets! Namely that an ambition I have had, rather bashfully, for a while now is to be looking to develop an appropriately humble degree of a ‘Shakepearian voice’ in tone at least, and run it through contemporary free verse forms – how clever of you to spot that!

Sudakshina Bhattacharjee on Every new day

What a lovely, light poem that also makes you think from within.:)

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – be as bold

I found this utterly poetic and charming…your choice of words is amazing. Loved ‘how finite a liquid chamber’ and ‘drunken butterfly’ and many other phrases.  This is a top grade write!

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – ambition…

P.S.    Do I detect a S and an H written in twigs Scott?:)  in the picture, I mean.

Scott says: Yes, it’s true -you spotted that OK! Can’t take the credit for it though, I’m afraid – that belongs to Creative Director Neil Stephenson, who was doing the B&W photo shoot for the website, last summer.

Vinita Agrawal oNew Poem – ambition…

Shari LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – New Poem – be as bold…

It is good to be bold and to tend to enthusiasm with moderation and realism, for the world can be ruthless and lacking compassion, especially when we are in need.  However, it is good to remember the charge of electric invincibility when one is so young and earnest at heart and filled with ambition for life.

Shari LeKane-Yentumi on Green Parrot at Cape Tribulation, Queensland Australia.

Banu Bidarkund on New poem – for me…

Introspective poem, made me remember how important innocence is even when one is mature or older enough in life because certain things about nature require in its essence that one looks through it with a  childlike eye.

Oh My Goodness!  You’re poem spoke directly to me.  I needed to confirm what I’m presently doing or to let go and try something new.  I now know after reading your poem, that’s it’s time for me to walk through the door that has been open for me.  All I have to do is walk through.  Thank you for timely poem especially during my three month of pray, fasting and mediation on hearing confirmations on moving forward.  Got it!
Your poems always speak to me, I truly enjoy them.  I await your next one.

Lucy Chili on New Poem – if you can…

Beautiful

Lucy Chili on New Poem – anchored…

Yes, well described. It is exhilarating “Knowing that, at any one time, It is only for you and you alone, To decide to stay or move on, To pause, or to reach out And clasp something new Close to your heart,” but then also talks about context and judgement.

Today the poems make me think of how flimsy we are. How momentary. perhaps sometimes even waiting is a choice?

Scott: I so agree, Lucy – waiting is indeed a choice and one we sometimes opt for too often – and, at other times in out lives, too infrequently… Again paradoxical!

Don MacIver on New Poem – if you can…

I felt a great sense of liberation reading this wonderful piece. Your closing four lines are a wonderful choice of words. Your photographs here have a wonderfully rich texture to them.

Marta Merajver-Kurlat on New Poem – anchored…

I’ve rarely seen such deep truths and challenges to the reader in spotless poetic form. The aesthete and thinker in you transpires every single verse. I cannot pick out a particular line or stanza; the poem is a perfect whole to be apprehended as such. Thank you for such beauty.

Brian Miller on New Poem – anchored…

It is only for you and you alone, To decide to stay or move on, To pause, or to reach out And clasp something new Close to your heart,

What awesome power and responsility in those lines….that we are free as you say in this…but freedom always comes with a price as well…and in this it how you make those decisions….

Thank you for those gifts.

Lina Ru on New Poem – anchored…

The relationship between the poem and photo is really beautiful. The blending between yourself and the grass relate to your poetic concept of anchoring and the in-between. Although there is permanence, there is the ephemeral, a mix.

You poem is thoughtful and brings us to the task of reflecting while experiencing the beauty of your words/images, love it!

Vinita Agrawal on New poem – for me…

Very impactful last two lines – they chord in all the frivolity man indulges in, so well described in the earlier lines and give a deeper meaning and direction to where we are going. A great poem to pause and ponder on the true meaning of life!

I have to say, I am quite impressed actually……Did you have an experience or Epiphany of sorts that got you started in Poetry???? Not to be vain or assuming they are, but some of these sound like they are about me….I suppose it’s only because I think in comparisons and there are more than the usual likes with a similar alignment as my own. I find your work Brilliant and Understanding to others Deepest Parts of One’s Inner Soul and Care about another’s emotions.

Joanny Rowe on New poem – in the shadows…

Similes and metaphors are two of the most powerful tools in the poet’s toolkit when it comes to imagery and describing things.
Naturally, they are used a lot in poetry, where the writer has limited words to get his message, or vision across.
Your use pf metaphors and similes are appropriately  used to vividly describe things that would otherwise be difficult to picture,
in addition you use them creatively to get a vision across with limited words,
Your poem naturally strikes a chord with the human heart and aptly puts a fresh spin on familiar things.

Shari LeKane-Yentumi on New poem – in the shadows…

Dear Scott, I noticed that your photo is positioned in such a way that it appears to suggest a decline (if you read it from left to right), a motion of uncontrolled power that requires applying the brakes from time to time.  And there you are in the middle of it resting against the fence and pondering your poem, perhaps, and the meaning that speaks so prevalently to me about facing our own fears:

“Too often we choose instead To become lulled, To forget life shrinks or expands In relation to courage showed, Becalmed by the risk of pain or loss And outcomes that can never be certain.”

There are no guarantees in life that the outcomes of our actions will yield what we desire; the only sure thing is that we will be disappointed if we do not try.

Scott says: Thanks Shari – I always look forward to what you have to say – your comments are always insightful and persuasive…

Dear Scott, Thank you for a beautiful poem.

I love the first lines. It is so often when we are in love or inspired that we forget about God and attribute our bliss to something of the world. It is wonderful how you bring us back to the divine as the source of everything. If we do this, the creation and the love just keep on coming.

Further on the sentiment that “the truth is nothing that truly matters can ever evaporate” is a wonderful reminder to us that there is a reality beyond this one that holds our beauty and that this self continues to be whole and healed no matter the difficulties we may experience in the world.

I publish publish spiritual poetry and motivational poetry on my site at   and would be honoured to receive one of yours. It can have been published in hard copy, but my criteria is that it is not published elsewhere on the Internet.

With the love we are, and are blessed to know, Katherine

(Dr) Jelka Samsom on New poem – in the shadows…

How beautifully the I-narrator of this poem sweetly shifts from “I” to “you” and “we”.

And indeed, the question this poem poses is a universal one: do we settle for living in the shadow of life or do we dare, despite disillusions and pain, to listen to the “soft pastel energy” within us?

Mahnaz Mohafez on  New poem – in the shadows…

Very Nice! You know, poetry is the flight of heart & soul to the sky of imagination, a quality that I feel is present in all of your poems. THANK YOU!

Scott your poem is well written and truly speaks from the hidden places within the houses of the mind.  I refer to it as such as my own life is stilled in fractured images of reality and also that which resides in the inner garden of the soul.

Shriram S on New poem – sometimes it might seem…

Nice imagery despite some of its cliches (like birds and …arrows). But, it winds down in an eventful manner, esp. the line ‘Just as it has to.’
