Readers Comments – Archive 2016

AUTHOR STATEMENT:

My poetry looks to positively explore human potential, with an emphasis on love, spiritual growth and self awareness. It is very important to me that my work remains as open, accessible and as simply expressed as possible. My influences vary from the great traditional English visionary romantics through to the distillation of thought and leanness of expression offered by the Japanese haiku tradition, the shining examples of Rilke and Gibran – as well as (being a fully committed free verse poet…) the later technical breakthroughs achieved by leading Scottish concrete poets Ian Hamilton Finlay and Edwin Morgan.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:

“To write and sell poetry at a profit these days is a minor victory and a major achievement. Scott’s words gently unlock and force you to face and look at the world with a little more optimism. There are moments of deep joy and others, which take your breath away with simple incredible honesty”

G. White

“Scott Hastie’s verse is sympathetic, humanistic and positively affirmative. Accessibility is the touchstone of all Hastie’s output. The spiritual element in his writing is clear.”

G.E. Jones

“Scott writes meditative, reflective poetry that is steeped in the traditions of English verse. Concise and richly evocative, he should be widely read.”

R. Godwin

“Via an invisible gilded chain of perception, Scott Hastie generously leads us through an enthusiastic re-invention of the possibilities of new experience. His inspired words bestride the world with such ease, touching the deepest sensibilities of human beings everywhere.”

Satish Kumar Shukla on New Poem – To live a little…

The native English idiom comes to shine, brightening up the telling.

Richard Atwood on New Poem – To live a little…

Had hoped your poem was about Pamukkale. Wondrous place. I was there in the fall of ’62. One of those things one does not forget: out of the sliding glass doors of the hotel room, and into the warm, champagne-like waters, swimming right up to the edge of the cliffs, looking out over the valley. Then early Sunday morning, a camel train wending its way along the base of the foothills behind us, through the ruins of Hierapolis… the Roman amphitheater nearby. The heavy weight of history… spears as it wills, the quest never abandoned… pierced by joy or wounds… focal points, transitions… glimpses of heaven, always the twists of pain.

Diane Burrow on New Poem – To live a little…

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – To live a little…

I absolutely love your new work. It encapsulates all the emotions I am currently going through. The life’s dilemmas, uncertainty , contingencies and all the coded chronicles which are part of our very existence. I guess these challenges make us more human and keep us grounded in order to be resolute and soldier on with life’s ongoing journey with hope and faith.

I wish you a lovely Christmas and may the spirit of Christmas replenish you with happiness, contentment, fun and creativity.

Kim M. Russell on New Poem – To live a little…

The opening lines remind me of that song ‘Every Time We Say Goodbye’, kind of wistful and then you sock it to us with an ‘anvil of angst’ and ‘coded chronicles / Of such a pointed / Lifetime dilemma’. The human journey will always end in death so what’s the point in allowing ourselves to be ‘limited /By such dominant / Conviction / That fears the end so’. Better to be free to flower. I think I have reached then age when I don’t fear death itself, just the manner of passing.

Eric Erbe on New Poem – To live a little…

Passions are to be shared
This is sparse but vivid
A garden carefully tended.

Lovely

Rosemary Nissan Wade on New Poem – To live a little…

When you put it like that, I think, ‘Yes, what else is there?’

Carob Hush on New Poem – To live a little…

The opening and the second to last stanza are my faves.

I know i’m nutso, but I read this as being about 1) that old cartoon The Littles, and 2) living/dying as a little … sub, baby girl, whatever you want to call it.

Don’t stone me. I don’t mean to be so twisted in the head.

Elizabeth on New Poem – To live a little…

The soul twist and turns in our need to know. But, sometimes stills to listen for forever.

Wendy Bourke on New Poem – To live a little…

This is very contemplative and eloquently articulated. “The resolute onward journey Of our soul”: indelible!

But always a delight to have tea with you.

Gillena on New Poem – To live a little…

Luv your second to last verse best. It seems to bridge the contemplating soul in the words gone before and the resolute of determination of the final verse.

Much love…

Julian on New Poem – To live a little…

Wow, really enjoyed your poem, such a powerful opening stanza.

Colleen on New Poem – To live a little…

I like the layered truth here. Life is such a coded mystery. You remind me that it is all soul building.

Rommy on New Poem – To live a little…

Fear can certainly impede our journey, but we are much the poorer for it when it does.

Mary on New Poem – To live a little…

Ah, I wait for that time when hope is freer to flower again. May it come soon…….

Happy holidays to you, Scott; and a great poetic year ahead.

Truedessa on New Poem – To live a little…

Scott, your poetry is so enjoyable. It touches the heart of life. They do say to live a little you must die a little, perhaps it is to make room for new experiences.

Maxim Chernikov on New Poem – To live a little…

I’d really like us to become friends. Very sorry that you do not read in Russian. But the spiritual connection still triumphs over this, given that, even with rough translation, the poetic metaphor can break through and melt any iceberg of a foreign language! I love your poetry, in common with Yeats, Keats and other principal luminaries!

Yours Maxim.

Maxim Chernikov on New Poem – To live a little...

Dear Scott!
Beautiful metaphors, beautiful poetry! You are a wonderful, fine poet! Even seeing those pretty lines, translated into Russian language, I have a lot of fun!

Totomai on New Poem – To live a little…

Perfect poem to read before the year ends! Looking for the new year

Happy holiday, Scott

Jae Rose on New Poem – To live a little…

That angel could well be right.. maybe our souls are both dead and alive – if we carried everything in its live state it would be hard to keep going..somethings must be shed aside to lighten the load.

Sumana Roy on New Poem – To live a little…

So beautifully penned specially the last few lines…

Munia Khan on New Poem – To live a little…

Life smiles through the lines of this glorious piece, dear Scott! How can I not praise the profound depth of this poem! I mostly love the second stanza along with the opening four lines.Amazing phrase you created- ‘anvil of angst’ and I adore that ‘angel’s enigmatic smile’. Excellent piece of poetry as ever. Thank you for this great work.

Jane Bartels on New Poem – To live a little…

To me, a philosophical and metaphorical poem that is a fine definition of a path, a way, towards the rest of our lives….I like the hope it projects…

Funny, I don’t look or lean on the anvil of angst that comes with life…it just happens….but there is so much good around us, it is the beacon I try to follow. I find that in your poem, too.

Overall… It’s a very good poem, not loading with metaphors, but stripped down to the nature of something sensible. At least this is what it reads to me. The simple message is stunning and needed.

I also think that the pre-ordained religious stuff associated with this time of the season corrals any other creative and individual thoughts and practices by those who don’t march to the dominant drummer. The Winter Solstice expands my gratitude and appreciation for the season and beyond.

Overall, a marvelous poem, Scott. One that I am glad I read at this time of the year.

Danny Johnson on New Poem – To live a little…

Dr Jelka Samsom on New Poem – To live a little…

Dear Scottie,

What a truly lovely lighthearted way to speak about our usual belief in “time”, our fears, our egos, and the timelesness of our souls!

This past year has seen so many disasters worldwide, maybe that is one of the reasons why you put your message accross ever so gently…??

All good wishes to you, your loved ones and your many loyal followers too,

Jelka

As ever, you get it… My dear Princess S

Speaking as a pastor, what an amazing vision of heaven this is!

Magaly Guerrero on New Poem – To live a little…

The first stanza offers a bit of magnificent wisdom. The words evoke an image in my mind, which says, “You’ve seen this, haven’t you? The smiling angel of the cryptic grin?”.

Wonderful. And true.

Sreeja Harikrisnan on New Poem – To live a little…

Every true passion
Shared since
Speaking so clearly to this,
The resolute onward journey
Of our soul…………..simply beautiful! It has got a strength to offer….

Manngoime on New Poem – To live a little…

This to me is a metaphysical poem and I see deeply into a yearning soul for divine direction. I see a hunger for the unknown to be made known. But if this must be then someone or something extraordinary and non- human must come in-between man and the unknown that is why an angel must rip up the chronicles hitherto hiding the mysteries of man’s eternal existence. Only one personification is worthy to open the book and claim the billion of souls who were lost to sinful lust and rebellion and then usher them into a wellspring of life with the trinity. There is no more ” lifetime dilemma” and the fear of where we will spend eternity because he who is to come had already come and our flowers have now become brighter. Our tortured souls can now rejoice in our journey of hope to because we now know where we will spend eternity.

Thot Purge on New Poem – To live a little…

The coded chronicles

Xenia on New Poem – To live a little…

A beautiful poem Scott and I especially love ‘Every true passion shared since speaking so clearly to this, the resolute onward journey of our soul.’

John Lysaght on New Poem – To live a little…

To live one`s life freed for passion there is a commitment to the process and an acceptance, however tense it may be, of our finite journey, here.

Bjorn Rudberg on New Poem – To live a little…

I really love how you have used the opposite to balance here. For me this sounds like a new-year’s poem. Whatever the next year brings, there is both end and beginning….

Have a wonderful holiday.

Marina Sofia on New Poem – To live a little...

About much more than life and death, although about that too. It’s like metal having to go through fire to become stronger.

Lisa C.Miller on New Poem – To live a little…

Beautifully said.

Satish K Shukla on New Poem – To live a little…

Fine feelings, nice verse, calming cool thought…

Satish K Shukla on New Image – West Bay…

Four elements at duelling
The sky high up laughs
Fellows!
The cloud comes crashing
Seemingly so with its unpredictable moods
Oh those winds conspired broods
The sea looks for breaks
Wave after wave after wave
Day and night, who knows
A Tsunami perhaps
But the rock stays put
Full face to the upsurge
Sky or cloud or wind
Or the water’s urge…
So saw a poet’s eye
The element’s splurge
Spread across the view
Come on! Bring on more of the slew
This heart is brave
Oh! Jocund too
But more likely grave
For, humans compel it
With unwanted persecutions
Though it were better left
To it’s poetic executions

Myrna on New Poem – To live a little…

It’s such a nice way for you to end the year. Makes me focus on the quality of life and death too, they are partners. I like that you consider that resolute journey. There is much depth to this poem. Lovely writing.

Jon Mukand on New Poem – Recent Writing…

Congratulations on another year of fine poetry.

JT on New Poem – To live a little…

Greetings Scottie

The first stanza resonated so strongly for me. we all have to live a bit more in order to experience loss too. It is a philosophical quandary. The last stanza completed the circle – the resolute onward journey of a soul. Insights like such are mature, evolved, and expressed with a tinge of sadness too. Very provocative indeed. Enjoy the rest of 2016.

Jeffrey Bennett on New Poem – To live a little…

Ah, but I love that first line, how shape is lent to breathing, and heat.

You make a fine line seem a mile wide, then there’s this journey, cataloguing all the signs I might have missed. Always a joy to read you, Scott.

Always a joy…

Rebecca O’Donnell on New Poem – To live a little…

Wendy Waters on New Poem – To live a little…

As always incandescently Hastie! Love the combination of rhythms and ideas and themes that always illuminate Hastie’s poems. To pick a favourite line would be difficult but here goes: “To crack open
The coded chronicles” other readers may see something quite different in this image but to me it speaks of releasing secret joy and finding hidden meaning in the mundane. Lovely work! Keep the words flowing.

Annell Livingstone on New Poem – To live a little…

Perfect ending, “the resolute onward journey of our soul.” Thanks, Scott!

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – A sheen…

Just read this your new beautiful and wonderful work of art : A Sheen — Love the title. I think this is the first time I have ever read such a positive note on memories. Usually memory is treated with such melancholic touch, but I love that you treat memory as an entity – organic entity which synthesises in our soul and our being becomes one with them.

“That eventually settle,
Coming to rest somehow
In the very fabric
Of who we are.. ”

Amazing as ever. You are my umbilical chord to this world 🙂

Wendy Bourke on New Poem – A sheen…

A wonderful write. I especially liked: “I see this so clearly In the eyes of others.” There is a lot to be gleaned from the eyes of others, and yet … society seems to instill in us, a compulsion to look away.

Lovely poem and photo … the world seems to be on a heavy arch at the moment … let’s hope it shines one again with the sheen of hope.

Gillena on New Poem – A sheen…

I am intrigued by the depth of wisdom in your last 3 lines of today’s poem.

Much Love…

Jae Rose on New Poem – A sheen…

I hope that joy reaches us before pain topples the bridge – that you see it and how you are there – a gentle energy in the stones of the wall – suggests it may if we are patient.

The balance between joy and pain… lucky are those who discover it in the process of finding who they are.

Mary on New Poem – A sheen…

Ah, every moment that has gone before brings us to the place we are today. So much depth in your words, Scott! And time does indeed have a heavy arch!

Xerxes Aga on New Poem – A sheen…

Hello, Scott. It is always a pleasure to hear from you and to read your latest work.I will not dissect and comment on any individual line of your work.Poems are not judged by their fragments.Your latest work resonates with me because I can understand the ecstasy and the agony of having and then not having something or someone very precious to you.

Imelda on New Poem – A sheen…

I feel like sitting back, closingy eyes, and think about your words. There is a contemplative quality in them.

Rebecca O’Donnell on New Poem – A sheen…

My own sparkle has begun to finally glow again. Thank you for such a beautiful reminder for us all to notice that incomparable sheen, Word Artist. Beautiful.

Dixon Rice on New Poem – A sheen…

Sheen, glow, charisma… you start with these shallow substances yet drag the reader to the complex texture of life. Wow.

I’ve been reading ‘Girl on the Train’ while hiding in Atlanta from Hurricane Matthew, and now can’t get the image out of my head of you on the commuter train from London.

Nan Mykel on New Poem – A sheen…

I am swept away by the second stanza, entirely.

“I see this so clearly
In the eyes of others,” has me guessing.

Nan Mykel on New Poem – A sheen…

The second stanza swept me away. I’m toying with the meaning of
“I see this so clearly In the eyes of others.” Very thought-provoking — the fabric of our being.

Glenn Buttkus on New Poem – A sheen…

An arch, a circle, or perhaps something sinuous or ragged like a pulse on a graph. Metaphysically, I believe in a spiritual continuum, and we sort of know that nothing is truly just linear, They say time does not exist on the other side of the veil, past, present, future–all together now. As a poet we can celebrate life even as we report the machinations of our own experience. Loved the simplicity, honesty & clarity of our piece.

Judy on New Poem – A sheen…

First time here, but it won’t be my last.
You weave your words together in a lovely fabric of expression with depth and beauty.

Your gift clearly shows through your craft.

I find your writing very moving, Scott – the essence of it all has me beleaguered at times, so I find your words refreshing and your empathy astounding. We are all connected and I am happy to read your reassuring

Paul Dear on New Poem – A sheen…

My first visit to your pages and boy what a treat. A poem of timeless form and substance. Recognising the imprint of life itself in the eyes of another. The passing of time on or under our skin. The moments yet to come and mark us. All that is ahead. In all of these things I sense a hint of a witness, a seer of all, that which was, is and will be…gazing from that eternal now.

A wonderful read. Thank You.

Linda Krushke on New Poem – A sheen…

Micki Peluso on New Poem – A sheen…

I was thinking of you today, Scottie, as I rearranged my book shelf and came upon your wonderful book of poems. I think it’s time for another one. This piece of prose says so much is so few words and can be interpreted in several ways. I found it interesting that life seems depicted as an arch instead of a circle. Perhaps the other half of the arch is eternity. And the last lines:Joy and pain
Spread so evenly
Along time’s heavy arch worded so aptly, give off a beacon of hope.

Lisa Miller on New Poem – A sheen…

Your words are beautiful and deep. Well done.

Beautiful …So touching Scottie sir. We (or rather our corporeal costume) wither away with age, losing oursheen and glow…reminiscing our hey days to keep the hallowed light divine awakened within our being.
Who likes old age Who likes One’s Youth on the wane?? Albeit, it is all part of life. The Eternal Drama of life goes on… We must however keep our spirits high and soaring!
Thanks for sharing this sensitive marvel. Your poignant portrayal of feelings so tender!
Much regard, divine love and greetings My dear Scottie sir!

Bjorn Rudberg on New Poem – A sheen…

Yes, indeed a beautiful poem. “The promise of tomorrow, embracing the very beginning ” So simple, very powerful.

Ritwij Mishra on New Poem – See How…

I have just been reading the poems on your site. The positive streak and the overflowing beauty that you imparted to those brief verses is (or perhaps, ‘are’ (concords holding no importance at the present moment) too overwhelming for me to feed you back my critique as a fellow poet. For a few hours, let me simply relish in them as a 22-year old. Once the reverie is over, once the crying and smiles are over, I would post a comment publicly. Thank you for the resonance. Lord knows, it is us cold young people who need moving verses like yours the most.

Susan O’Reilly on New Poem – See How…

Victoria Young on New Poem – See How…

Scott, This is such an inspirational piece. There are so many nuggets this is but I love the last line the best:
if it is not the best
Of ourselves
In each other.

It’s the good things we transfer in others that truly stand out and make life worth living.

Rall on New Poem – See How…on New Poem – See How…

We leave behind the best in each other.Very very insightful.

We will be remembered positively for that. Being remembered is of no importance at all in itself.Creating dynasties and wealth in the hope of immortality is foolish

The importance is, in the way you have treated people in your life and what you have created for others rather than for yourself. This gives the living hope.. hope that there is kindness caring and goodness out there . You can read the scriptures till the cows come home but unless you have experienced and practised the virtues of kindness justice love written about within… it is meaningless.

Once again another stunning poem. Thank you Scott.

BK mackenzie on New Poem – See How…

Micki Peluso on New Poem – See How…

Hi Scottie, sorry so late in viewing this but I think you can understand why. Although life never seems to get better yet as your poem states so well, hope abounds. Where would we be without it? Your last lines sum life up so well and the tremulous journey we all travel:
“Enduring transmissions,
Without which
One would surely have to
Start over again,
Without any narrative of hope,
Nor glimpse of heaven
Or twist of pain.”

Jack W. Haight on New Poem – See How…

I enjoy Scott as a poet, for the very simple reason that he speaks in a very unique “poetic voice…” For myself, however, I find the attraction based less upon the poetry as upon the metaphysics…Scott is a gentle soul that hearkens back to the impressionists, most notably Stephane Mallarme’ and perhaps Rilke…The tone is very spiritual without being religious…Because his faith is not based upon dogma, perish the thought, but upon the his strength in personally interpreting events for himself…So yet another shared experience of Scott’s ethereal gossamer gently brought to earth….

Ilana W. Haley on New Poem – See How…

Scott, enjoyed the peaceful feel. The read is relatively smooth, a few line breaks seem forced but not too distracting and it might just be me. Nicely done. I’m not a big fan of capitalizing the first letter of each line but this is more a personal preference. Again nice feel and a solid read. Mac

Dear Scott Hastie,
This is clearly the most transcendental poetry I have read of yours, and so appropriate at these troubling times in our world filled with struggles and strife, danger and doubt; when what we truly need is a metaphysical approach to humanitarian healing such as you offer with your beautiful verse. You alway rise above the clouds.

JT Smith on New Poem – See How…

Greetings

I cannot stress enough the magnitude of this lovely, poignant verse. Scott’s melodic wheelhouse is based on Truth as one reader suggested. His form of poetry is unique & deeply evocative. The theme of human potential is a universal subject. We are all at fault if we fail to compromise on differences. We must try harder to understand what makes us, what shapes us, & what defines us. Scott’s sense of soul is what we all should strive for.

Laura Lavelglia on New Poem – See How…

Hello! I know this Is poetry, but this is truth!! Love is a powerful tool and I believe with this said, we do leave a bit of ourselves in all we meet!
Such a touching piece of work!!!

Aria Ligi on New Poem – See How…

The sweetness and sincerity in this piece (as well as hope for humanity) cries out strongly like a beacon in the night.

Here is my favorite part:

As we meld together,
Again and again,
In our own self-made
Shafts of sunlight
That can so easily
Survive succumbing
To any melancholy
Along the way.

The line that especially resonates is “In our own self-made shafts of sunlight”. The visual in this is palpable and will touch anyone who reads it.

Bravo on a wonderful poem that is sure to speak to many.

Sherry Marr on New Poem – See How…

This is very uplifting to read, Scott, especially in light of the daily news these past weeks. The disconnect is the underlying condition, you are so correct. I love your closing, leaving the best of ourselves in each other. Sigh. A most beautiful poem, and wise.

Patrica Ketola on New Poem – the heavy weight…

It seems you have a lot of astute and enthusiastic supporters. The response to your poetry is truly impressive and that must mean you strike the universal chord. I read this and visualized Muhammad Ali in the ring fighting off the spears and piercings of history all the while maintaining his quest for the pure. My first impression is that your work is elegant and beautifully crafted. On also reading ‘as we spin and toil’ I was also deeply impressed by your use of the cliché ‘ …it is what it is’. Brilliant!

KC Bandana on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Your positive words demonstrate an inspirational way of living a life in such a short piece of writing. I read your poems time and again…. How beautifully you take words in your mind and express them on paper. It’s no easy task to write something so powerful.

I love to write and its has been my passion. I am therefore doubly blessed to have found you as God in human form. You have really won the heart of many readers. You mean a lot to me…. With Best Wishes

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Wow such powerful emotions and bone-chilling imageries especially ” Focal points of emotion,Now glowing red raw again” … You never fail to amaze us with your words which are so packed with a bubbling cauldron of emotions. A truly gifted poet, Scott is indeed very veracious illustrating how life encounters situation filled with inevitable pain and melancholy that one has to endure yet we need to start over again even though hope is seemingly absent- there is no better and beautiful way of summing up life than what our lovely Scott has.

One would surely have to
Start over again,
Without any narrative of hope,
Nor glimpse of heaven
Or twist of pain.

Debarnes on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Scott it’s a pleasure to read your work. Poetry is life…

Debarnes on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Scott, you have the full grasp of the written word. Your poem is very intriguing and your words resonate within. Each stanza is filled with veracity Scott; your Words inspire…

It is a great work of Art, because your poem paints the picture of human life as it is, Scott. Congrats my friend it was a pleasure for to me to read. It is also a pleasure to meet another inspired poet who has found his ‘Wal’ and is at peace.

With Sincere Regards

David – debarnes

Rarely do I send a work to another. You are an exceptional Poet. And so, for you and your readers pleasure:

Materialization

Today I saw Picasso
in my kitchen,
he glanced at me mournfully
a sinister jaded green, stark within the frame
on my wall …

thin, gaunt, haunted,
haunting eyes, frail flesh, skin on bone.
So much grief
cleaved to canvas.

Did he ever understand
understand the impression, he would leave …

that millions would pass,
through colors …
in to his world, of worlds within.

His gaze left me,
feeling …
Somehow, a work of art,
paint,

ready to dry out
drying, deteriorating with age.

I deduce one day,
my son will say of the picture
he holds of me;
my flesh, skin on bone, was pastel,
not jaded green;

and in my passing, I was no,
Picasso.

Ositadimma Amikeze on New Poem – the heavy weight…

A wonderful narrative. Thank you Scott.

Aria Ligi on New Poem – the heavy weight…

This is a lovely poem, precise in meaning, pithy and eloquent.

Witness the lines:
Enduring transmissions,
Without which
One would surely have to
Start over again,
Without any narrative of hope,
Nor glimpse of heaven
Or twist of pain.

Well done.

Wendy Bourke on New Poem – the heavy weight…

History and hope – two concepts that seem to be at odds with each other … more and more, these cruel days. We may live in a global village but, sadly, the more we learn of our histories, the more we seem to become mired in it – the promise of tomorrow, less promising for humankind, with the passage of each day.

Elizabeth on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Really got hooked by your opening lines. Reread them several times before continuing. Then circled back after finishing. Beautifully stated,

Elizabeth

Audrey Howitt on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Kaykuala on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Enduring transmissions,

There has to be cues to the things one desires. It certainly helps prompt for ideas to come falling in. Rightly so Scott!

Hank

Myrna on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Wonderful to have the goal of being pure. Our tomorrow’s need to have such hope even if history weighs tham down. Lovely writing Scott. Love the picture.

Very nice journey in this piece, excellent writing!

Sherry Marr on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Back again… The lines that most struck me are “for mine’s a quest, as yet unabandoned, to be pure.” I love that.

Donna on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Scott this was wonderful…I especially liked….

‘My own wounds to date
Focal points of emotion,
Now glowing red raw again.’

This really touched me. Without those wounds we would not be who we are.

Jae Rose on New Poem – the heavy weight…

To start completely afresh would be to lose the lessons we may have learnt.. in some instances that wouldn’t be so much losing weight but losing substance – love the photo also – full of optimism..

Rosemary Nissen Wade on New Poem – the heavy weight…

But what is the definition of purity?

Gillena on New Poem – the heavy weight…

“Start over again,
Without any narrative of hope,
Nor glimpse of heaven
Or twist of pain.”

These line i ponder with you; and in the process of your starting over again, you have the power to name your path:

From me i offer, Let there be Wisdom
Let there be joy

Have a great Sunday Scott

Much Love…

Mary on New Poem – the heavy weight…

It sounds like you are on quite a worthy journey, Scott — ‘a quest to be pure.’ Love the photo which expresses so well the poem’s theme (for me anyway).

Munia Khan on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Great piece of work. Powerful strength comes from verses like this. This weight is no burden but a force of life to overcome all struggles. Excellent poem as always Scott. I love it.

Barry on New Poem – the heavy weight…

The weight is certainly felt here.

Yvonne Mahlape Maserumule on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Creative and beautifully written. Very nicely-worded and simple. Love your poetry!

Bryan Ens on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Love the opening of this. History is a heavy weight, but the future is a light promise. What are we doing today that turns yesterday’s promise into tomorrow’s burden?

Lillian on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Ah the history that abuts the present — a thought provoking piece.

Mish on New Poem – the heavy weight…

A very thought provoking piece. Each stanza made me dig deep into my own interpretation which I enjoyed very much.

Thotpurge on New Poem – the heavy weight…

My own wounds to date
Focal points of emotion,
Now glowing red raw again…

The weight of history does press against old wounds and make them the focus of pain again.. beautifully put!

Matthew Henningsen on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I really like the suggestion of just being led, pushed as if you don’t have a choice. Entrapped and yet free from it at the same time. Very interesting.

Ayala on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Lovely piece! I enjoyed it 🙂

Therisa on New Poem – the heavy weight…

An interest piece of poetry, which I need more time, for the words, to truly sink in. Not my usual style of verse, must admit.

Grace on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I specially like the opening line: that heavy weight of history ~ And we certainly carry it, raw or perhaps to start again ~ Thanks for this Scottie ~

Walter J. Wojtanik on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Very observant and full of insight, Scott! Another fine work here!

Annell on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I loved reading your piece!

Magaly Guerrero on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Most of history can be poison on hope and dreams. But thank goodness for the better bits, the ones forged by women and men who remind us that we can do better, expect better and even more.

Powerful. And true.

Buddah Moskowitz on New Poem – the heavy weight…

This has the weight, the gravitas of truth. Enjoyed.

Bonita Christensen on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Here they come, pouring out of the blue
Little arrows for me and for you (Leapy Lee)

Burnin’ hot…oh you don’t feel the same (Foreigner)
(Those two songs came to memory from your poem)

Sorry…I have a song brain and everything that was before
actually remains the same.

Expression of our angst or our will
Is much the same as going in for the kill

But it’s better than gathering moss
And I know I can’t write quite like Frost!

Don MacIver on New Poem – an academic review by Nivedita Yohana

A most impressive literary assessment and interpretation. Scott, your writings are really quite exceptional; the reading experience a reciprocal exchange.

Don MacIver on New Poem – new image Japanese bride on her wedding day…

There is such a symmetrical flow about this young bride through and through.

Don MacIver on New Poem – disturbed…

As I read your every writing, Scott, I hear the soft, gentle, discerning voice as though a deliverance from Heaven.

Don MacIver on New Poem – new images – Springtime in Crete

I can see, through your marvelous travels, where your inspiration so often comes from Scott. Beautiful.

Don MacIver on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Fine words once again Scott. ‘Narrative of hope’ through your words would seem your unabated reason for being.

Susan Langer on New Poem – the heavy weight…

This reminds me of my flashbacks initially from childhood, but even those change over time and become less traumatic as we change and grow spiritually. I like your poem.

Dr. Jelka Sansom on New Poem – the heavy weight…

“What is most personal is most universal” (Carl Rogers). Thank you, Scott.

Micki Peluso on New Poem – the heavy weight…

This poem reads a little differently than most, albeit just as deep and thought provoking. Many layers in few words which both warn and promise. These words have attached themselves to me and my own situation.

Sometimes I think you write just about me, as do so many of your friends and fans. What a great tribute to a poet of integrity and honor, yet humble – hidden under armour so easily dented by reality.

Robert Morris on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Lovely Poem… Well done

John Lysaught on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Being laid open and allowing vulnerability permits change to oneself
and to the events that follow. Embracing hope through whatever history
there may be is of lasting significance.

AEdske Van Steenbergen on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Very hopeful,inspirational and encouraging

Luckman Clark on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Bong! Bong! Bong!

Arnost Vevoda on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Seriously I’ve tried to comprehend your new poem and came out with a question mark? I’ve comprehended much of it but not enough to tie in your complete meaning. Since I have other personal issues to attend to, I feel that I should give it a couple more readings in my own timeframe. And yes, the parts I’ve absorbed have both ingenuity and a strong message.

Michelle Goodhew on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I enjoy your work, so you’ll see me around.

Mahnaz Mohafez on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I read the poem and I think it sounds different from what you’ve shared so far.

In my opinion, the last part of your poem is an invitation to patience and belief in one’s own abilities:

Enduring transmissions,
Without which,
One would surely have to
Start over again,
Without any narrative of hope,
Nor glimpse of heaven
or twist of pain.

Your advice was short and sweet. Indeed there is a trace of humanity in all what you so beautifully write.

Marta Merajver Kurlat on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I posted your pic on FB as my favorite contemporary American poet.

Carol Zielinski on New Poem – the heavy weight…

As usual, I like this very much…

Your closing stanza has extra impact, Scott. I love that the joy of the quest is still strong in you. That is a very cool photo, no pun intended, LOL.

Sarah Wardle on New Poem – the heavy weight...

I like the realism of this combined with its hope very much.

Old Egg on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Sadly history instead of teaching us lessons appears to do the opposite. Poets clearly have great insight and can see the flaws of civilization and hopefully this may one day be a guide to a brighter future. Let your words continue to shout out loud Scott.

Sayed Rohani on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Very philosophic. The weight of not only history leans on “the promise of tomorrow” but the weight of of all our deeds and thoughts and plans also leans on the “promise of tomorrow.”

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – the heavy weight…

For mine’s a quest
As yet unabandoned
To be pure

Beautiful stanza! Engaging poem from you Scott – one that inspires us to remain positive despite the burden of history. Your words keep hope a constant…all the bad, the worse, the ugly shall pass but rich optimism will always grace our minds and hearts. Thank you for this lovely luminosity in your work!

Lisa Miller on New Poem – the heavy weight…

The imagery in this poem is vivid.

the part that stands out to me is:
‘My own wounds to date
Focal points of emotion,
Now glowing red raw again”

Your poem is wonderful.

Marta Merajver-Kurlat on New Poem – the heavy weight…

A masterpiece, as usual. This poem is not to be commented on lightly, for it encompasses the whole history -and tragedy- of mankind. I need to think about it, especially about what the narrative does to us and about how sensitive souls will not forego the quest regardless. What you say with an astounding economy of words would take a novelist several hundred pages. Will be back.

Mahnaz on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Spectacular shots!

J on New Poem – the heavy weight…

“My own wounds to date
Focal points of emotion,
Now glowing red raw again.”

I love the imagery of a wound as a second heart,
as the birth source of compassion—where we begin
our journey with but hope folded in a jacket pocket.

Kim Drew Wright on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I love the combination of spears toward the beginning with the ending of glimpse of heaven, twist of pain, juxtaposition. 😉

Cojocaru Calin on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Wow!

Philippe-Marc Chablais on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Beautiful! Thank you

Marcie de Gilio on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Wonderful!

Anna Moon on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I love your poems…

Joseph Randolph on New Poem – the heavy weight…

It is a beautiful piece.

John Rachel on New Poem – the heavy weight…

“Whether pierced by joy

Or fear,

My own wounds to date

Focal points of emotion,

Now glowing red raw again.”

And such as it is, there in an inevitability to it all, whether we are privy to outcomes or more typically a clueless actor.

Syed Ali Haider Kazmi on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Very nice

Jo Guarracino on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Scott Hastie : Thank you so much for the divine poem.

Bonnie Roberts on New Poem – the heavy weight...

Scott, I have always admired your work–but I see even more strength and craft in your poetry. Not JUST craft for craft’s sake, but craft that takes the reader on a journey, sometimes painful, sometimes hopeful. Your feelings/thoughts are full of doubt and clarity at the same time. I am a great fan of paradox. So glad you are with us and writing in the world!

Laura Bailey on New Images – Springtime in Crete…

Beautiful photos that are deeply appreciated by me… Thank you Scott!

The Sensitive Thinker on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Greetings Scott

another tremendous display of artful, elegant verse. there are some highlights which cannot be duplicated. the first line demonstrates the possibilities. it continues red raw as sweetness of fire. there is a physical beauty to this as well as spiritual awareness. the title reminds me of a boxer. it was not the first intent. getting atuned with Nature. congratulations. you have captured a delicate harmony of emotions + mythology.

Mickey Morgan on New Poem – the heavy weight…

May your quest always be unabandoned

Barbara on New Poem – the heavy weight…

History as well as life changes and we either accept to live with it or we grow numb. People suffer losses throughout life and some until it’s chafed from repeating. It’s part of the process my friend. Great write!

Bjorn Rudberg on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I think even weighted by history, confirmed in transmission, we have to feel some hope, some light to seek… we simply must. Lovely words Scott.

Michael Green on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Don’t grok it but I like it! Strange?

Mercy Jerry on New Poem – the heavy weight…

Beautiful Scott. “My own wounds to date Focal points of emotion, Now glowing red raw again”. History brought forward to the present, similar occurrences even as they were in the past. “Enduring transmissions”. Nice choice of words Scott; a continuous repetition of the past over and over again. Really “The Heavyweight”. I love this

JVL Narasimha on New Poem – the heavy weight…

I think heavy weight is both physical, mental and even spiritual. Angels can fly because they are very light. I can not run because I am over weight. Very meaningful and insightful.

Karen on New Poem – disturbed…

I enjoy your poetry

Stefn Sylvester Anyatonwu on New Poem – if there’s an ambition…

If there is an ambition really got me. The third verse was the strongest. Pain in pleasure. It only hurts if there’s truth in it. Nice inking Scott and would like to share. Once again, I like your poems.

Beautiful Geisha! The pureness of the Japanese women 🙂

Michelle Rene Goodhew on New Poem – disturbed…

Beautifully written! There truly is so much more here for us. When we begin to open-up to our higher selves and start living in harmony with what we truly desire, we bring abundance to ourselves through our actions and thought patterns, it’s magical. We come to understand a sense of oneness and how we all move about and interact within the entire space of creation, it’s musical and lovely. Thank you so much for sharing your inspiration.

Aria Ligi on New Poem – disturbed…

This short but succinct poem brings one in quite well, with lines such as

And, slowly but surely,

We are being pulled in,

As one episode

Follows another

On our transit.

Gradually becoming wedded

To something,

The purple light of divinity

That we call God.

We are summoned forth to contemplate the passage of time and the variances of life that come with it. Well done.

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – disturbed…

Your words are ridden with so much power. It is amazing how you knit all the pearls of wisdom into one globule!!! You once again hit the bull’s eye, love is our redeemer- redeems us from all the irrelevant, petty feelings of ego, jealousy, anger…. Beautiful piece of art!!!!

Micki Peluso on New Poem – disturbed…

Beautifully done! I especially love your definition of faith.

My best, Micki

Loiriam Jiminez on New Poem – disturbed…

Hi Scott, your poem is inspiring. “become fearless” is beautiful. We Christians stay strong bold in Christ.

Tony Maude on New Poem – disturbed…

Hi Scottie,

Like many others the lines that grabbed me are:

“In trying to understand love,

We become fearless.”

They remind me of one of my favourite Bible verses:

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fearrs is ont meade perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18)

And as it is unlikely that we will ever understand love, however that is understood, then we just have to keep on trying.

Donna Allard on New Poem – disturbed…

Boy! Did I read this at the right time..

Lucy Logsdon on New Poem – disturbed…

I love the last stanza: those four lines are deceptively simple and beautiful—yet they allow for fire, that can’t be quenched. I didn’t expect that deft turn. For me, it makes the whole poem!

Ravikant Bharati on New Poem – disturbed…

Go on… Poets always rediscover themselves.

Richard Havenga on New Poem – disturbed…

Scott:

Another amazing piece of work!

“The gentle balm of faith…” has a firm hold on me; especially when grace is given freely by God. It does not have to be earned.

Thank you brother, for your gentle writing.

John Lysaught on New Poem – disturbed…

Hi, Scott. A wonderful poem which calls us to re-examine, to allow divine love and openness to the joys of life to kindle and take flame.

JT Smith on New Poem – disturbed…

Hello again

the opposite of vanity is indeed love. there is a certain spirituality for this transient poem. we must dig inside ourselves to discover the Truth of our consciousness. it is important to remember that we are capable as human beings of such graceful humanity as well as destruction of our souls. Disturbed is a wake up call for all of Us.
Thanks for revealing a sensitive side which we all should aspire to & dream louder with.

Ronee Henson on New Poem – disturbed…

Thank you for sending this so thoughtful poem !!
It spoke to this reader’s soul.

Susan Langer on New Poem – disturbed…

“Disturbed as we are
By greed and vanity,”
Reminds me of a Bible Study I just completed on my Blog, Susan’s Devotional Journal, about Ecclesiastes when Solomon keeps saying “Vanity, vanity.” Your poem is ver spiritual and special.

Richard Merlin on New Poem – disturbed…

Dear Scott: I truly enjoyed your new work, “Disturbed.” While it kicks off with reference to greed and vanity, it takes us back in an entirely different direction – the embrace of love and a consciousness of God. I imagine it braiding out before me, like a river branching out into tributaries in a valley. It is wonderful work. Bring on the Ode to Spring! Best Regards, Richard.

Sherry Marr on New Poem – disturbed…

Wow, Scottie, this is very beautiful! I love the progression of the poem, the same way consciousness evolves, down the page, to the culminating lines. I like the new look of your site, and your books page is very impressive. Way to go!

Manngoime on age gathers, colludes…

Methinks if i love and dazzle with gladness in my heart, there will be no shadows lurking behind me and creeping
behind to steal what i have hoped for.But even if there is any i will be so glad to leave behind what i don’t need in heaven…let the creeping shadows take all my sadness…for i know that my redeemer liveth !

Manngoime on together we must…

Wow!

So indeed have we been hit steadily in the face by this COLD STARE, which has been with us as long as we have allowed it. I am more particularly drawn into this unforgettable experience because of the call to come together and confront the past with our faith. we are not totally vanquished because GOD ON OUR SIDE and His mercy helps us to be renewed-FEEDING THE TRUTHS WE SHARE WITH A UNION OF OUR SOUL.

Our chaotic lifestyle notwithstanding, our cold past alive, WE SMILE ON because we know that GOD ON OUR SIDE we can still come out stronger … see what we envision ahead of us… to BUILD BEAUTY AMONGST CHAOS.

Andrea Raine on New Poem – as we toil and spin

A beautiful, evocative poem that captures so much — the time we find elusive, the moments that we don’t see or don’t allow ourselves because of the interruption of life’s ‘noise’. Thank you for your poetry — your brave, quiet truths. I bought Meditations, and I look forward to reading more of your words you choose to share with the world.

Ms.Mala Janardhan on New Poem – treasured energies

I found this a wonderful poem, flowing naturally with an inherent rhythm and indeed beautiful in its understanding of the spiritual life. It reads almost like a prayer, indicating the transient nature of what is truly precious, as in the phrase “too good to last”… . Your writing does indeed speak to the soul and leaves a lasting impression on the mind of the reader.

Glen Buttkus on New Poem – treasured energies

Scott, it is a joy to join the queue & extoll the beauty & clarity of your words, both introspective & metaphysical, because yes, self love is essential, spirituality dwells within, the solution to the problems of this world, of each lifetime, is an inside job; echoed by your poignant lines /to make of myself/sweet sanctuary/. This many comments, stretched out nearly ad infinitum is reminiscent of the responses Brian Miller always garnered.

Pleasant Street on New Poem – treasured energies

“Have I whispered
To my past,
Can I begin again?”
This was the heart of it for me. I read this back in December as well though I did not comment.Good for you leaving hope and faith at the end.

Pleasant Street on New Poem – treasured energies

Surely you are joking Vivienne, you did not move around someone else’s words? I’m stunned reading that.It causes me pain and they aren’t even my words.

Scott says: Honestly no worries for me – the piece resonated with dear Vivienne, that all that matters to me and we all have our own internal rhythms that can effect the technicalities of appreciation – so all is good!

Vivienne Blake on New Poem – treasured energies

A beautiful poem, full of wonderful thoughts.

I was a bit taken aback by the lineation, specially with the initial capital letters on each line. I tried combining some of the lines to read it aloud, and found it flowed more naturally.

I hope you don’t take this amiss, because I do love the piece.

Kaykuala on New Poem – treasured energies

Nothing is ever

Ours to keep,
Rather only to glory in

This then is the acknowledgement that Providence provides and we are all the custodians of goodness to be used but not to own. Not many though are aware of this fine distinction and continue to hoard their ill-gotten gains as theirs to keep. Great word craft Scott!

I, like so many others here, love your endings and near endings:

“Nothing is ever/ Ours to keep,/ Rather only to glory in/ For a while…”

And especially this:

“As step by step, / Faith accrues.” Magnificent… My own faith accrues every day, every year. I am blessed…

Scott, a very touching poem. Permanency is temporal. Faith and memory can rekindle. Happy holidays.

Dwayne on New Poem – treasured energies

Love your work my friend. It has a deeply moving, ephemeral quality to it. Like long forgotten voices, sometimes heard, always present calling us to rejoice in self, and the new miracle that lies just beyond our grasp, and so reach.

And when we do, we create amazing work like this.

Enjoyed it my friend.

Peace.

Adrienne Miranda on Recent Writing

I am taken tenderly to the splendor of hope, love, and the gracious reality of how temporal and painful this earthly life can be. Renewed in the beginnings of the Kingdom awaits and uplifted for certain that the links that bind us together hold the key to everlasting joy. Treasured energy and precious healing is gifted to us always. Breathe it in………and embrace it. I am happy with your poetry and welcome it with all my heart…

Wishing you a wonderful holiday and looking forward to more poetry from you in the new year.

I loved this even more on second reading, Scott. One of my favourites of yours.

Truedessa on New Poem – treasured energies

Scott, such a beautiful poem “nothing is ours to keep”. Written in your soft spoken style the pen is gentle on ones heart and soul.

Nothing is ever
Ours to keep,
Rather only to glory in
For a while,
Nourished
By brilliant residues.

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – treasured energies

Nothing is ever
Ours to keep,
Rather only to glory in
For a while…
The ephemerality of our physical existence is clearly encapsulated in this beautiful piece of gem. Scott elegantly crafts his words and soothes the soul by reminding us of our responsibilities as human beings- to acknowledge the mortality of our lives and to recognize the divinity within us which needs to bubble, rise and erupt into rhapsody connecting back to the divine-genesis of life force. Scott has proved this, time and again in an extraordinary measure.

Sanaa on New Poem – treasured energies

But for nought,

Have I whispered
To my past,
Can I begin again?

Sigh.. such beautiful yearning in these lines.

Thotpurge on New Poem – treasured energies

It’s really hard to internalise that we are not permanent nor are the things we call our own… Such a soft rhythm to this poem.

Jae Rose on New Poem – treasured energies

I suppose the very definition of energy is that it doesn’t stay still – but to acknowledge and take pleasure in those fleeting moments of good/nourishing energy is certainly key to accruing both faith and maybe even peacefulness and strength inside.

Laura Bloomsbury on New Poem – treasured energies

Everyone has their favourite lines and I like “But for nought,

your poem is tantalising in its message – measured hints to the final lead up

Dr. Jelka Sansom on New Poem – treasured energies

The symbolism of the hands gives this poem a special and hidden depth; no two sets of fingerprints are the same, our hands show us our profound uniqueness. And with “My hands are gathered before me as if to hold what is precious within”, an emotional, spiritual and perhaps also biblical connotation can be felt.

A beautiful poem, especially for this festive season!

Mahnaz Mohafez on New Poem – treasured energies

You always have insightful messages for all, dear Scott! This poem clearly shows how invaluable it is to be thankful for what one has in his life.He should be careful, however. That’s because “Nothing is ever Ours to keep, Rather only to glory in For a while,Nourished By brilliant residues,Till blest again”.Thanks for sharing another wonderful poem!

Mere receptacles? I am experiencing life as a live wire, a conduit, without beginning or end.

Scott says: Yes indeed Angela – receptacles… In other words spaces where energies can take shape and begin to spark… Energies that make us eternal when our physical body (receptacle) is no longer… So yes, without beginning or end in our essence beyond mortality itself…

Symmetry is beautiful and elegant. These columns are quite arresting. It is as if they were sculptured by the hands of God’s love for humanity.

JT Smith on New Poem – treasured energies

Scott

I feel as though your connectedness speaks to all of us. I can tell that this moment of reflection and emotional release is meaningful. It is about acceptance of our grievances. We are not invincible no matter our strength. Home for me is psychological. I might reside in a physical place but it does not represent me. I try to simplify what my heart believes. There is always a discord of harmonies. This style of poetry should be celebrated for it is honesty and rawness. You’ve created a beautiful piece of Art here. Let it radiate. Let it glow. Let it transcend.

Munia Khan on New Poem – treasured energies

One of the chief purposes of Scott’s poems is to communicate poignantly a certain truth about our spiritualism- ‘Treasured Energies’ is indeed a powerful depiction in this respect.
