AUTHOR STATEMENT:

My poetry looks to positively explore human potential, with an emphasis on love, spiritual growth and self awareness. It is very important to me that my work remains as open, accessible and as simply expressed as possible. My influences vary from the great traditional English visionary romantics through to the distillation of thought and leanness of expression offered by the Japanese haiku tradition, the shining examples of Rilke and Gibran, as well as later technical breakthroughs achieved by leading Scottish concrete poets Ian Hamilton Finlay and Edwin Morgan.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:

To write and sell poetry at a profit these days is a minor victory and a major achievement. Scott’s words gently unlock and force you to face and look at the world with a little more optimism. There are moments of deep joy and others, which take your breath away with simple incredible honesty”

G. White

Scott Hastie’s verse is sympathetic, humanistic and positively affirmative. Accessibility is the touchstone of all Hastie’s output. The spiritual element in his writing is clear.”

G.E. Jones

“Scott writes meditative, reflective poetry that is steeped in the traditions of English verse. Concise and richly evocative, he should be widely read.”

R. Godwin

Thank you for sharing these images Scott…truly inspiring.

J.Z. Murdoch on New poem – its all joining up…

The Red kite… yes, it’s interesting what a professional can do with words. Those words “lone red kite Flies overhead in a clear blue sky”, how the words, “red kite” and “blue sky” work in that phrasing.
Sure it’s contrastual, but by the end of the poem it has built up a degree of emotion, funneled there through only a few words, that is deceptive on the surface just how this has been done and how effective in the end, it really is. :)
Cheers!

Mish on New poem – its all joining up…

Katie Mia Frederick on New poem – its all joining up…

These words truly resonate with me as somethings in the synchronicities of the tapestry of life that we perceive can be so hard to put into words but never the less they are more real than words alone…

You do a great wording of it here.. and this is the type of writing that can affirm and confirm this experience for others.. who haven’t quite found a way to put it into words in a way that there mind can rationally understand what is obviously reality in another dimension of what reality truly is…:)

i hope that makes sense.. as truly not everyone experiences this.. i think.. until much later in life… when the experiences all do start to make sense as tapestry of life..:) if one is fortunate to get that far.. and know.. in someway like this…. But again.. it can be words like this.. that help others on their way… of life….:)

Don MacIver on MAIN FEATURE INTERVIEW

Scott, this interview is wonderfully representative of your passion for poetry, a passion we both share. Your champion of and for this literary journey, on your own terms, is most admirable and inspiring.

Your gift is a treasure Scott, for yourself and equally for your readers as well. There is nothing quite as deeply personal, profound and gratifying as the visceral response of a reader touched by our words.

Godspeed in your journey as it continues to unfold Scott. Your voice resonates deeply through your heart, mind and soul. Your wordcraft takes us on an undeniably rich, soulful and inspired journey of our own. No other medium has that strength, that resilience, that connection with its reader.

Embrace your gift for all your days…as we, your reading audience, embrace, through your words, that you do indeed speak to our souls.

Nena on New poem – its all joining up…

Incredible Scottie! Beautiful, eloquent… What a perspective to apply to one’s introspection about life. It’s both poem and meditation. Love!! <3

Talon on New poem – its all joining up…

This was so layered and textured, Scott. It made me think of so many things…it made me think of deja vu…of knowing you’re in the exact right place at the right time…and it reminded me of those moments when there is absolute certainty that who you are is who you are meant to be. I enjoyed your poem tremendously. Thank you!

I like how the persona seems to shed off layers as the poem progresses until, eventually, the poet feels lighter and more able to live fully.

What a wonderfully uplifting poem to read, Scott – love the reference to the collective consciousness and the realizing of something one already instinctively knows, when one aligns oneself with spirit. Enjoy things falling into place and the uncertain knowledge that you knew it would, you knew the way! God be with you. Keep the poetry rolling out as a model for living. What else is the sum of a life if not this fulfillment?

Annell on New poem – its all joining up…

It is good when things fall into place. (I wondered when reading your poem if the use of “your” might be better to say “mine.” Referring to the personal? Since you are talking about your experience, not mine?)

Scott says: Take your point Annell, I suppose I was using ‘your’ in the collective rather than individual sense – rather like ‘one’ which I guess is a particularly English thing to do, probably!

Jeta Vojkollari on New poem – its all joining up…

“Long twisted, luminous / Ribbons of light,”… Nothing could describe life better than these beautiful words… A wonderful poem.

Mary on New poem – its all joining up…

I agree, Scott, that one must learn to pause if one is to be truly rich. I think if one is in constant motion all the time it is difficult to SEE the richness of what is in one’s midst

Interesting to think about the idea that one might think of life as a series of lessons of intertwining truths. Actually I wouldn’t want to think about life that way as it would be too theoretical, and I think that one would constantly be looking about for lessons rather than just enjoying the way things come together as one lives. I think your ending expresses that though, Scott, the way things DO fall into place. Comforting thought to realize that.

Leslie Moon on New poem – its all joining up…

Nice to meet you as well.

Dr. Keshab Chandra Mandal on New poem – its all joining up…

I have read some of Mr. Scott’s earlier poems. Like the previous ones, this one also reflects his inner calls and great thought provocation of creation. I salute this gentleman and pray to God Almighty for his well being and good health so that he can keep on writing for more decades and spreads the message of God.

Yves on New poem – its all joining up…

How beautiful Scott! I believe that the the answers are already within us, we know our path but sometimes we can get confused, those moments we wake up, those moments of wonder and epiphany are beautiful indeed and you have captured them with elegance.

Aria Ligi on New poem – its all joining up…

I think the idea here which is said quite well is about rebirth and growth within the self. Then, somewhere within you, you find at the end of the journey things which you already knew, hidden inside. This is well expressed here:

That such sweet
And illuminating experiences
Can sometime come to you,
And altogether
In charmed combination,
Becoming powerfully reminiscent
Of something,
Instinctively it feels like
You already knew,
A long, long time ago.
And that somehow,
Has, all at once,
Been magically
Re-birthed within you,
Once more.

The rebirthing process is evident not only in what you do, but in those special moments (rather like de ja vous) in which a small epiphany is reached. The key is to be aware enough that when that moment happens you don’t miss it, but take it in and learn from it.

Adda Leah Davis on New poem – its all joining up…

As if someone spoke to the soul within, I read and reread this turning of the pages in your book of life or the drifting of petals from the center of the flower. There are emotions and thoughts beyond the human experience or expression that should be inviolate and never spoken aloud by our limited language. Thanks.

Ronee Henson on New poem – its all joining up…

Your words are so real! That red kite exists! Just hope that fate does not down it before you are ready…..but if it does, pull yourself together and go on! There is only one life for each one of us.
Thank you for that reminder.

Lovely optimistic words, just lovely.

Margaret Nash on New poem – its all joining up…

With a nod to William James and his stream of consciousness, and a nod to Carl Jung and his collective unconscious, Scott has depicted life as an active, continuous vibration of light and frequency that roars by and through us, from time immemorial on into the future. It joins up and gathers in, only to explode again into unraveling, extraordinary patterns, and then fall into place; only, one can presume, to gather up again.
Our role is to pause this never ending stream from time to time, enjoy the kite, enjoy the sweetness of the moment. It’s all we can do in the face of this juggernaut.

Micki Peluso on New poem – its all joining up…

Dear Scott Hastie,
Your love of the classics is evident in all of your work, and the philosophical nature of your writing reflects your love of many cultures. Your life is a fascinating study, Scott, and I wish you all the best and continued success in all of your creative endeavors!

Shari Jo LeKane-Yentumi on New poem – its all joining up…

The archetypal imagery of a lone red kite circling in a clear blue sky is like a phoenix risen, soaring into the newly familiar freedom of organic infinitude while ashes remain a future memory.

Your work is lovely. I was drawn into your words immediately:

“So drink deep of your sorrows,
Drink deep of your joy
And then love and live restlessly
For as long as the charged ache
In your spirit allows.”

Beautifully written and I particularly love this last part.

Nick Howe on  About

Poetry can be very demanding on both the reader and the writer to make a connection; as can be seen from the other comments, Scott is able to bridge that divide.

Jeffrey Patrick Bennett on New poem – here I am…

Scott, you exhibit this delicate touch, each breath between scenes caught in the pines, the caress of a feather while the quill, suspended from animation dips drunk into the well of the moon, it’s always too soon when this poem is done.

I hear echoes of Li Po, of so much breath baited, pregnant pauses . . . I can’t wait to devour more of your verses, good Sir.

What intricate work you make! This is fine nourishment, and I’m starved.

J.

Tony Maude on New poem – here I am…

Hi Scott,

Anyway, this is lovely as usual. The final stanza is particularly strong; the challenge to drink deep of our sorrows is one we need to hear in a world where we seem to do all that we can to anaesthetise ourselves against sorrow and pain. Sometimes it is only by experiencing setbacks that we can grow.

I really love this quote by Buddha.

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”

Pushkar Bisht on Interior of Buddhist cave temple at Dambulla, SriLanka dating from 1st century BC.

“God realization is the greatest and ultimate thing in this world but you can’t achieve this in a moment because you have to be pure and innocent first. You don’t need catch & wait for the light because light is already within you. You just have to realize it by meditating on it and then it will turn you into light & purity. This is the last & high stage where you will rise above all the things and mingle with the supreme soul” Pushkar Bisht

“Sit in silence for a while everyday & listen to the music of your inner heart. Once you are connected to your inner heart then you are connected to Divine and then you will experience that you have never felt so much energy & purity earlier” Pushkar Bisht

Pushkar Bisht on Interior of Buddhist cave temple at Dambulla, SriLanka dating from 1st century BC.

Buddha is the symbol of peace. Everyone can be buddha but he has to go through according to his own voice, because if he listens to others and acts on it, his inner voice is somewhere drowned. It’s difficult to attain light but if we keep on struggling for it, we receive it one day. We don’t need to leave our home to be buddha. Buddha already lies within but we have to bring it out by deep meditation and realization…Buddha went beyond duality to attain enlightment, he finally attained it.

Joseph Gargiulo on  New poem – here I am…

Deep and moving. Very specific and interesting visuals, especially the dervish. The Fancy Irish Fellow from New York on New poem – here I am…

Here I am! Ready to confound as well as astound.. There aren’t enough raindrops that pour through the hole in the sky to express the sentiments of such metaphors. Autumn seems to inspire as well as motivate me also. it’s a sense of elegance and sophistication that makes us wonder. You write for the soul… Restless as we are, it is the questions of the universe which we rarely discover the equations. So continue to grace us, let us too use our imagination to seek out within.

Mickey Pamo on New poem – here I am…

BaBoomBa . .. ! I’ve gotta think on this one. My first take is “beauty on a razor’s edge”. Great, rich, worth reading and digging deeper into it. Thank you, Scottie. Never stop writing . . . love the composition of your personal photograph on your home page. Dancer-like, painterly, expressive

Paul Bowles on Order Options…

In Meditations it is written, “…just to be open and joyful in your heart…” Is Angel Voices the corollary? I have to get it. Are you priming us Scott.

Scott says: Greetings Paul, good to hear from you here and how intuitive… Yes, you have it in a nutshell! Angel Voices begins with the best of the foundations created by Meditations and then develops on from there… With Best Wishes

Jetta Vojkollari on New poem – here I am…

What a wonderful poem, Scott! Thank you!

Especially love this:

“Beauty will continue
To throng around me,
Till I am no more.”

Nena Black on New poem – here I am…

“Without fear we are capable of anything…” How perfect this is, Scottie. This entire piece rushes through me like fresh summer rain, makes me want to whirl like a dervish. One of my favorites now…. xx

Nura Ahmad on New poem – here I am…

I came across your poem (forgetting where and when, but today I fully understand who the author is. I believe that since the poem talk to souls there must be difference in interpretation and thoughts about it. Here’s what I have to say: I generally consider the poem as inspiring…or quite motivating? in the first stanza the persona expresses his stand… as if confusing oneself as never before… ” forever chasing shadows…in the literal meaning is not far from fruitless effort, but in metaphorical sense can be a goal similar to shadow in the sense that it cannot be touched or caught yet it’s there. “knowing that…(when achieved) beauty will continue to throng (gather) around me (persona of the poem) “Till am no more”…(here no more does not mean death but rather the persona is no more confused or confusing). This stage in life can be achieved through struggle … “without fear, we are capable of anything”…showing strength in character and hope or certainty. “Smell of fresh rains” signifies the hope… and whatever one does… ” The world watches.. and waits for us”…(for heroic cheers? ” to have an unquiet response”. The last stanza celebrate the success yet cautions the bearer of the success… ” Drink deep of your sorrows, drink deep of your joy, love and live restlessly, as long as, the charged ache, in your spirit allows”… for as long as one absorbs the tension or pressures as well enjoys the fruits of his struggle… the struggle continues as far as he is alive.

Scott says: Thanks for the time and trouble you’ve taken your detailed take on this poem, Nura – I think on your notion of ‘heroic cheers’ my take here is that I feel a discernible presence which is standing by somehow – as it must… Waiting, hoping for us to do the right thing… If that helps at all? I did take care of the amends to your comment, as requested – Thanks again for your interest in my work – much appreciated…

PUSHKAR BISHT on New poem – here I am…

The most beautiful example is set by American Philosopher Henry David Thoreau. He went to live in woods. He wakes up in nature and take a cup of tea and then reading books that make him beautiful in thoughts….

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to find only the essential facts of life, and see if I could learn what it had to teach – and not to, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived”.

Spring is the season when all the leaves breath a new life, and we feel happy. Your poem reminds me of the Shelley poem “If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind? Those who are close to nature find all the happiness and they don’t need to go to materialistic world to find happiness…God must have taken a lot of time to create nature because the beauty lies in abundance…Those who become close to nature, nature gifts them with a lot of knowledge, intelligence, wisdom, spirituality, kindness & creativity. When I became close to nature, I was reminded of the maxim that: “those with true genius so often learn from nature, whilst the intelligent learn from books….

PUSHKAR BISHT on New poem – a need…

This poem is very lovely and nice. I enjoy reading it.

Ronnie Shantz/Robinson on New poem – here I am…

Very nicely stated. It does ring true, unfortunately for me, I seem to have more sorrow binging than joy lately. Hope it’ll change soon. Well done.

Sharon Rose on New poem – here I am…

Such passion for life in this one! Well done.

Sharon Rose on New poem – a need…

Very heartfelt write here. So specific and appealing to many writers views. Reading your write made me ‘feel like’ I was reading a summation of one’s work. Strangely even my own. And many different writers works. Kind of mysterious isn’t it. Like a summation of everyone’s small existence; acceptance. (liter or litter?)

Scott says: Hiya Sharon, Thanks so much for this – we say litter over here in the UK – though, as you can see irrespective of spelling, the use of litter (with all its various connotations) provoked differing responses in the comments above…

Caron Allan on New poem – a need…

So true, we are complex creatures full of yearning

Caron Allan on New poem – here I am…

Lovely Scott, as always, thank you!

Di Castle on New poem – here I am…

Lovely writing and the point about fear is so apt. Fear is our biggest enemy.
Someone once said but I can’t remember who so ‘author unknown’ Fear went to the door, Courage answered, there was no-one there.

Margaret Bednar on New poem – here I am…

“So drink deep of your sorrows,
Drink deep of your joy
And then love and live restlessly”

One can not underestimate the power of embracing our sorrows – loved this and yes, restlessly live :)

Aria Ligi on New poem – here I am…

This has a lovely resonance to it. My favorite stanza is the one that says:
The smell of fresh rain,
Like gunpowder on the lawn,
Embellishes the day,
As the summer rips on.

You can hear the beat in this, and at the same time it paints a picture of both sight and smell.

Additionally, great picture next this. It has some whimsy which is really nice.

Myrna on New poem – here I am…

What a lovely write. I enjoy the wisdom in it, the recognition that life can be happy but there can be sorrow and that fear prevents us from fully living.
I thouroughly enjoyed reading this. Thank you.

Hank on New poem – here I am…

And then love and live restlessly
For as long as the charged ache
In your spirit allows.

Great ending Scott! Yes live and let live. Let things move on their expected inertia!

Marina Sofia on New poem – here I am…

We all find what we seek or have in ourselves in this poem, don’t we? (That’s what a good poem is all about). I found myself particularly resonating with the verses:
little more
Than an excited dervish,
Forever chasing shadows

That’s how it feels like when you are trying to capture impressions, reality and experience in words.

Roslyn Ross on New poem – here I am…

Brian Miller on New poem – here I am…

Enjoyed re-reading this… Another part that jumped out at me today was the rain/gunpowder correlation that you drew… Still though, it is the embracing both joy and sorrow that clinches this for me…

Yes, hear hear! Our themes were quite similar this week… I especially loved

Ginny Brannan on New poem – here I am…

“So drink deep of your sorrows,

Words worth remembering:

For isn’t it true that,
Without fear,
We are capable of anything…

Wonderful Scott!

T.J. Sally on New poem – here I am…

Scott Hastie is the Shakespeare of our time. His written word is something that should be pondered on … for within the prose there is meaning and understanding that goes well beyond the paper in which the letters were carefully placed. Scott is a gracious gentleman, eloquent indeed. Friendship, sincerity, wisdom and strength are all only a mere facet to this wonderful poet, writer, man. All that are lucky enough to know him will soon find that he is a precious jewel among men and a gift to all that he encounters.

Marta Merajver Kurlat on New poem – here I am…

Nan on New poem – here I am…

Great poem. It was reassuring that an unquiet response to the nature of things might be best. Unquiet it is, then! The last stanza is absolutely beautiful. An anthem for living. Well done!

Rebecca Fedler on New poem – here I am…

Torie on New poem – here I am…

Such wonderful wording for the way to live. Beautifully expressed poem here. It’s amazing how much we allow our fears to rule us. There’s so much beauty in the world that we should focus on instead. What a great reminder you’ve given :)

Mickey Morgan on New poem – here I am…

Call and response . . .
The call: “a need”
A response: “If I Were Fire”
If I Were Fire
I could move like a changeable leaf
wrapping and curving on the edges
while my central vein bent with the dry wind.
Shape-shifting, pliant,
dripping and stretching. Hot aspiring
to a cool blue God.

If I were fire you’d think me to a peanut between your eyes.
You’re only just now getting the trick of fixing me there
and are sure you’re changing too—you see me outside your brow.
You watch me flickering to your breath.
You inhale through full lips, soft tongue
and then pulse out a gentle nudge of air that yawns me
in a soft stretch off my wick, my spine.
A shirt on a pole drying in the backyard.
A flat Indiana farm.

If I were fire, I’d sheath around your flesh,
burn you like noon’s gaze, cape you under orange light.
I’d consume the hair all over you, the grasses
on the open plain, and then, when you were clean,
I’d love your spine as mine and all your limbs would wear me.

Barbara K. Smith on New poem – every new dawn…

Every day offers a new intersection to face – which road will I take – will my choice be the correct one? This is a profound writing that caused this reader to stop and realize each day brings new paths in every life.

Would that the world WOULD wait for us to respond; unquiet or no, perhaps we have something they need to hear.

Scott says: Hi Robert, thanks for your thoughts – in the context of this poem, I was really referring more to the physical world – fluid and organic yes, but in contrast to the poems protagonist essentially an inanimate presence…

Laura Bailey on New poem – here I am…

There is a wonderful sense of optimism in this poem Scott. There is great beauty and it will surround you…In this crazy, mixed up World of ours that sounds pretty good to me right about now. The changing of Seasons does make one think of one’s mortality,,,the fleeting nature of our existence. With Beauty by your, or my, side that is a wonderful way to pass through this life of constant change. It is with this resilience that we all can muddle through and do the best that we can to make our lives worthwhile and leave this World better for having been on it for a while. Best wishes to you for a wonderful Autumn and much success to you on your new book,’Angel Voices’

Bill Gncs on New poem – here I am…

A fine poem on how we should live to be really alive. Fear really holds us back, and lets others control us too.

Imelda on New poem – here I am…

Your words are elegant and the gentle musical rhythm of this piece shines through when read aloud as a poem should be read.

Claudia Schoenfield on New poem – here I am…

Fear surely holds us back and robs us of many things…and i love the scent of rain – and the freshness that comes with it… Cool part with drinking the sorrows and joy as well.

Charlie Zero on New poem – here I am…

These whole lines are brilliantly captured.

To have an unquiet response

To the nature of things.

So drink deep of your sorrows,

Drink deep of your joy

For as long as the charged ache

In your spirit allows.

You know and understand the essence of what nature is and how we should treat mother earth gracefully.

Beautifully writing my friend. :)

Kim Nelson on New poem – here I am…

I always appreciate writing that respects the value of every single word. You do that with this piece. Nothing frivolous. No fillers. Just the essential. My favorite lines, likely because dovetail so nicely with my own perspective: Without fear,

Lovely write, Scott!

Brian Miller on New poem – here I am…

My fav part is: drink deep the sorrows….joys, as it is counter cultural… We all want the joy…and not the sorrow but they both have something for us and both have their place in life, and perhaps if we drank deep of both we would live better // Restlessly… I like that.

Bjorn Rudberg on New poem – here I am…

Without fear,
We are capable of anything…

Yes yes.. this is exactly my sentiment… I love how you put that in the middle of the poem, letting this sentiment bridge into the imagery of the last stanzas, the first of which are probably the most stunning I have read in quite a while.

Cressida de Nova on New poem – here I am…

I raise my glass…to a charged ache ,zest for life beauty and passion..YES!

Whooooo . . . “litter of light” . . . lovely splash!

Rev. Robert P. Mitchell on New Poem – a need…

It’s been a long time since I have read poetry, but “a need” touched me. We all have the need to connect with others, nature and beauty. Being a pastor, I would’ve added God, but I find no fault in your having omitted that idea. Well done!

John Rachel on New Poem – you know…

Excellent poetry. I wish I had your talent for writing poems. Very inspiring!

And with this comes a sudden rush
Of warmth and validation
In the ensuing embrace,
The consequent smile,
The sigh of insight,
Or the tear that falls afresh.
As we stumble upon a brief moment
Of illuminated reflection
That, as if gifted,
Blesses and unburdens everything.
And you are an orphan to your soul
No more.”
Beautiful!

Darren Scanlon on New Poem – every new dawn…

Suzanne Staveley on New Poem – every new dawn…

 Scott, a good message…

– Never give up
– Recover the loss
– Abundance appears scarce until you look hard
– Only when you try, are you able to realise how limited your beliefs were
– Life is consistent. The perceived inconsistencies are shaped by the inconsistency in beliefs of what life has on offer.

Cheers, Suzanne

Ken W Simpson on Writing

It seems you and I write about the mind. I enjoyed all your poems and related to the varied themes, from gloom and doom to joy and optimism. Great lines. A pleasure to read.

Carl Ross on New Poem – a need…

Great poem! I think the “preachiness” comes from telling instead of showing, i.e, “A need for connections” or “And so should we.” I would take out lines like these and let the poem show that needful connection to the reader and to the poem itself. I hope this was helpful! Again, great job! Keep writing! You inspire me!

Carolyn Sames on New Poem – a need…

Scott,
Connection, isn’t that what life is all about..making new connections, losing track of some and cherishing the lasting ones. You have such a warm soul and never fail to make me smile. Thank you!

This is an aspirational poem which does not reflect the reality of our world. I think something a little stronger is needed to bring this desired state of being about. Like a revision of our entire social structure. Thought provoking.

Mike on New Poem – a need…

I didn’t think this was preachy at all; it talks of the need for connection, which everyone needs.

The ending of this, especially, I thought was perfect for the piece:

So that beloved things can glow
Together in a litter of light.

Best,
Mike

Rebecca O’Donnell on New Poem – a need…

I love the soft graceful light of morning after a long and scary night. Beautiful. I needed this reminder of sunshine. Thank you.

Margaret Nash on New Poem – a need…

The poet is adjuring us to collect and polish precious fleeting moments of connection and enchantment wherever we may find them. We can use these polished, glittering memories, like glowing pebbles, like talismans to to bring us out of our nighttimes, ie times when we are low or lacking inspiration.

So we build up our own internal collection of vibrant experiences to heal ourselves—we don’t need anything external—everything we need is already inside us.

Bridge2vision on New Poem – a need…

Somehow this brought to mind Emerson’s essay, “The Poet”, because your verse here creates a connection between nature, word, and imagined-possibility-brought into reality. Blessed friction indeed.

Aria Ligi on New Poem – a need…

The last paragraph really nails this just right:

To birth our night into day
And bathe it clean,
So that beloved things can glow
Together in a litter of light.

It reminds me of the glow worms that Wordsworth wrote about, thus capturing the connections between man and nature and how these things permeate all experience.

Aria Ligi on Elusive Kingfisher

Gorgeous picture! His color stands out against the grain of the bark and background greenery.

Micki Peluso on New Poem – a need…

Hi Scott, as always, a new look at a segment of life-one of the most inportant. “To birth our night into day
And bathe it clean, offers new hope after past failures. Narrating it gives it an essay sound, but interesting and effective.

All my best,

Micki

Wow..another beautiful creative marvel, Scott sir..the poem dishes out a great positive moral that one should rise with each dawn, valuing the same, as life’s meandering journey is too capricious to be taken for granted. Therefore, one must paint one’s own destiny with a new ray of hope, on one’s canvas and tapestry of life..with each passing dawn/day.
Bless with more wondrous moments of new lease of life , with consistent spiritual evolution via divine sapience and wisdom, Scottie sir. Bless you!!

Don MacIver on New Poem – every new dawn…

Scott, once again I find myself completely immersed in your words, inspired by the very personification within each line, each stanza, your voice, that drives my own internal energies to write as I do.

Few poets and authors in this day capture an audience in remotely the same way. Your perspective and resonant kindly heart and soul flow through your verse in such a deeply personal way and their conveyance leaves one truly inspired and enriched for having been here… Marvellous.

Hala on New Poem – every new dawn…

I think the love inside us is a preposition of those we have known and the dream of those we will know. We walk towards a future of solid understa, nding and I agree there is a lot of confidence in your poetic voice, are not all of us lost to the dream of the best we can be? I think your use of puppies is especially sweet fo they are beloved creatures

Vinita Agrawal on New Poem – every new dawn…

Beautiful and utterly inspiring! I particularly loved the second stanza. Loved too, the use of the word ‘de materialize’ in the opening stanza.
The poem is a gentle, tender nudge to our senses to get up and face a new day because as you so perfectly said it – ‘Life begs for the best of you.’ Indeed there is always hope in life…you nailed that thought in, Scott!
A poem that swirls out a simple message from a very deep philosophical understanding of life…

The Pensive One on New Poem – every new dawn…

“In a world
Where such states of grace,
Whenever they are coalesce,
Have no name, no shape,
No certainty…”

This piece of art, is by far, the best thing I’ve laid my eyes on in the modern world of poetry. Your poem does so many things to me inside. “Beautiful” would be an understatement. Do you mind if I keep it and read in my times of need? I just have never felt such a connection to a piece of poetry before. It just fills me with so much hope and poetic optimism. Sometimes words give me power and at other times they become a noose, and this, these words right here, they’ve summed it all up.

“It begs for the best of you.”

I thank you deeply for writing this. And I say all these things with the best of me.

I can’t believe I just poured my heart out in your comments.

Scott says: Thankyou – your response is very touching and helps power me on to try and reach higher…

Aria Ligi on New Poem – every new dawn…

This is a lovely poem which is infused with great thoughts especially upon reading it for those who have depression.

For even to be downcast
Is, in itself, an admission
Of such.
A telling acknowledgement
That something’s slipped away

This stanza truly speaks to those who feel adrift in life.

However, you do not let them lag in their well of emptiness which is good, because neither do you the poet, but in truth you lift them up with the following one in :

See how, all around,
The sweet breath of joy and inspiration
Patiently awaits

Yet you acknowledge that while there is always hope, what you are looking for is not a tangible thing:

The lift of will it needs from you
To lease back fresh hope
To your heart,
In a world
Where such states of grace,
Whenever they are coalesce,
Have no name, no shape,
No certainty…

And yes, there is not certainty, however, as you say, patience is the key.

The boldest of us
Will sometimes rise up to be,
Reaching out
Towards the improbable.

Here is the key, to even THINK of one’s self as one of the boldest, even if we are not, therefore enabling us to rise towards that which seems improbable.

The hope here is inherent in the wording and the message is clear.

Great work, and hope it reaches those who need it most.

Aria

KB on New Poem – every new dawn…

Scott, I liked your poem very much. As I said before we have very different styles and I don’t always feel that I am best at commenting on your work. My poems tend to use a lot of imagery and metaphor. Yours is very straight forward. I do enjoy the messages your work invokes which I think is one place we agree. I am planning on looking at your retrospective on Poet Hunter. Best >KB

Marika O’Baire on  a personal response to the ‘The Day is Done’ by Australian author Suzanne Staveley

Dear Scott: This is a beautiful, interesting piece – an elegy to life as if you are letting go of it. I love the sweetness and how your heart ‘thinks’ and that you keep writing, no matter what. I also very much appreciate that you support others to keep writing.

Warmest Regards, Marika

Nivedita Yohana on About

Your poems reach out to people all across the globe and allow people to indulge in your wisdom and in all your beautiful stream words, from which emanate such a telling profundity that already defines your poetry as belonging to the classics.

And how rare is it to find such true creative luminosity in a post and neo post modern world so dominated by deconstruction, meta-narrative, historiography and high sounding, but superficial new age philosophical and spiritual camp… In sublime contrast you directly defy all the conventions of modern day dilution of artistic sensibilities, reaching out directly to the heart and soul of all your readers who so obviously and enthusiastically hunger for your work’s purpose.

Cairenn Rhys on  New Poem – a need to pause…

Scott, this writing resonates so within me. Of many changes to come, and dreams coming to fruition – you captured each day I arise and face what is to be.

Many blessings to you my friend. You are a genuine inspiration to this poetess.

Jeri Fink on  New Poem – a need to pause…

So lovely – so true. As spring wans in this part of the world (New York City suburbs), the trees loose their flowers and turn green. Each day there are new flowers, new colors and shapes to see. It’s sad that so many people forget to look. Everyone should read “A Need to Pause. . .”

Cathy Nerujen on New Poem – lost puppies…

Your poetry is always searching for meanings and answers to those life-long questions. It reminds me of a poem I wrote as a teenager about memories and friendships being let go and let off the strings like balloons. But I like yours better, Scott. This is wonderful. Everyone can relate to the universal heartfelt truth here.

Cathy

Ositadimma Amakeze on New Poem – a need to pause

Pause- It’s like a calm flowing stream beneath which every smiling pebble
and bubbling little fishes are felt and seen in their being!

Thanks for this call Scott!

Ositadimma Amakeze on New Poem – lost puppies…

Not even our subjective experiences were or are formed independent of the effective ‘affectiveness’ of the other/s. The beauty of the poem dilates all the more with these beautiful comments from these refined minds.

A poem of acknowledgement to all those who have loved us, shaped us and a poem that urges us to move forward now, to recognize that there is nothing that stops us from meeting life head on. Your poem inspires me to embrace life to the fullest Scott…and in so doing express the intrinsic role that everyone has played in my life. What a lovely poem Scott!

Marta Merajver-Kurlat on New Poem – lost puppies…

It’s amazing how literature, but more specially poetry, resounds differently in its recipients. I don’t find anything somber about this magnificent poem. Rather, I sense there’s a sense of joy celebrating maturity built on well-lived youth, and the satisfaction of having become who we are through what others endowed us with.

“all the love inside you
Comes from the best of those
You’ve known and loved
And those who came
And went before you too…”

I view this piece as a the continuum of life, free of regret, accepting that we are part of a river. The waters -we- will not flow by the same banks twice, yet the river will fertilize the lands -thought, knowledge, emotions- until the end of times.

Acceptance of our human destiny and acknowledgment of how are lives are enriched by others as we enrich theirs is a lesson to live by.

Thank you for yet another outstanding, sensitive, realistic piece.

Princess Romay on New Poem – lost puppies…

Thank you! Your words are inspiring

Neena Sharma on New Poem – lost puppies…

A Short, simple sweet poem, Scott sir! Brevity is the essence of your poesy, here. Congrats once again for your splendid, subtle writing!

The most touching lines were:

And, on a day such as this,
When your world is calm,
Full of warm smiles,
And your soul is at last
Let off its string,
One cannot help but sense,
For certain,
That all the love inside you
Comes from the best of those
You’ve known and loved
And those who came
And went before you too

How true indeed. When we become soul conscious, ridding ourselves from our body consciousness, we understand the basic nature of unconditional Love, the unconditional Love of the world benefactor, our supreme father. This is the true love that we have been welling from all our beloved friends acquaintances, the world over. Let’s wonderfully cherish it lifelong. After all, all Pure love is the basis of eternal relationships. We stand awakened with this awareness and consciousness; no longer the lost puppies in the mad world.
We souls, as His children, are the fragrant flowers in the Eden garden of Life. Let’s spread and share our sweetness of fragrant divine virtues of Love, benevolence and kindness, in order to make this world a better place to live…Thus, heralding the advent of the GOLDEN AGE.

Thanks for the marvellous share!
Bless all!
Divine greetings and regards
Neena

Scott:

I agree with Gabriella and Mary Kling.

My other favorite part feels like my mission at WWFN. Your words:

“So, show me the wonder
Of all you’ve seen so far.”

Your poetry is remarkable, memorable.

Roman Long Gonzalez on  New Poem – lost puppies…

I just read your latest poem. Wow! As usual your work is inspiring and powerful. The really love the following of the last stanza, “…Stretch the day to its limit,
And let us have no guilt
Left to waste for dreaming still.”

Suzanne Staveley on New Poem – lost puppies…

Lost puppies
We are no longer,
That’s for sure…

(Have we been changed?)

Since all that’s been and gone
And the very essence of you,
Left behind in so many hearts,
Is never forgotten.

(Our loved-ones remember our original nature
before it was taken from us)

And, on a day such as this,
When your world is calm,
Full of warm smiles,
And your soul is at last
Let off its string,
One cannot help but sense,
For certain,
That all the love inside you
Comes from the best of those
You’ve known and loved
And those who came
And went before you too…

(In the joy of silence
we hear our spirit whisper
our original natural being
our awareness heals us
as we reconnect to the source
where the enlightenment of
giving and receiving abundant unconditional love
destroy the mind-set of selfishness, fear and scarcity)

Sweet darlings! Sweet youth!
All our hope and dreams
Derive from just that.

(When we find our true selves
we find the hopes and dreams
we were destined to live)

So, show me the wonder
Of all you’ve seen so far,
Stretch the day to its limit,
And let us have no guilt
Left to waste for dreaming still.

(The shackles upon our minds
the false concepts they are
melt away in the heat of reality
awareness is the key
to the treasure-chest of knowledge
that sets us free
The puppies have found themselves.)

Suzanne Staveley, June 2014

Vivienne Hook on New Poem – lost puppies…

Lovely. A reminder to remain free, even as you live within constraints. I particularly “the very essence of you, left behind in so many hearts” – yes, we all touch people along the way, but are rarely aware of the depth of that touch. Beautiful poem, Scott. – Vivienne, of OneVoicePoetry.

Kathy Reed on New Poem – lost puppies…

I am most impressed….the last comment says it for me as well re: essence of human existence; I am always prone to
think along existential lines. Bravo~

CC on New Poem – lost puppies…

I love this….it is so beautifully written. Especially, “And the very essence of you, Left behind in so many hearts.” From what I know of love, it seems that love infuses one person’s soul essence into the heart/soul of his/her loved one in a way that cannot ever be extricated….it becomes, as you said, an essence that gets left behind in our hearts.

Viv Blake on New Poem – lost puppies…

This beautiful poem leaves a bittersweet feeling – their puppy lives are so short, yet so joyous.

Jo-hanna on New Poem – lost puppies…

In my usual insomniac dyslexic state, I read this as being about ‘poppies’. In the light of your explanation, [“a relative state of helplessness.”] that actually worked out reasonably logical, as an opium infused semi-dream.

Pamela Sayers on New Poem – lost puppies…

Don MacIver, RPA, Writer, Editor, Author, Poet on New Poem – lost puppies…

Scott, you words will carry me through my remaining years with a sense of wonderment, treasure and the tranquil abeyance of many moments of reflection on your inspired verse, crafted with a fragrant resonance long after its writing.

Few capture the essence of life through the mirrored image of life’s beauty and gift of being with such gentle inflection on more difficult moments in life with a close that compels our greater perspective and celebration of the gift of each moment, hour and day we share on this earthly space.

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – lost puppies…

The poem is awesome, Scott. Your words are always pregnant with hope, life, spirit and verve. It serves as an inspiration for all the lost souls fumbling in the darkness, searching for light.

Dr Jelka Samsom on New Poem – lost puppies…

Just read “Lost puppies” and I love it! Of course the following is my personal interpretation but I believe this poem has all the Scott Hastie ingredients as it contains many different layers.

Yes, it can be read as an “ode to a lover” as Shari Jo writes. It mentions the flow from “puppy love” to “mature love”, the loss of youthful exuberance versus the gain of mature calmness. We also find the theme of ‘carpe diem’ and the poem can be read as turning from the personal into the general.

The ambiguity (?), fun (?!) of life exemplified by the first sentence, title and accompanying picture….

I feel overall optimism reigns; “Unus Mundus” , ‘lost’ puppies, you are no more….

George Hopkins on New Poem – lost puppies…

I really liked your poem. There is something about a man and his dog. I felt the love and the loss and the hope. Thank you for sharing your poem.

Dee Ashby on New Poem – lost puppies…

My small pet is dying. I read your poem and broke down. It is painfully beautiful. I’m sorry. . I can’t write more because my eyes are leaking as I write. . but I love the poem.

Shari J LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – lost puppies…

This poem sounds like an Ode to a lover who has left this world and passed on to another, leaving behind the wistful memories, the hopes and dreams that lovers share in an unforgettable reverie. Very beautiful.

Rob Harle on New Poem – lost puppies…

Beautiful poem Scott. One to keep aside for when one is having a bad day, this will surely turn it around.

Anna on New Poem – lost puppies…

Got a bit lost here dear Scott. First stanza would suggest a parting and subsequent stanzas suggest not so… Such is the fickleness of love…
Anna :o]

Margaret Nash on New Poem – lost puppies…

I agree with LKWatts that this is a sombre poem, hauntingly beautiful, yet sad.
The name ‘Lost Puppies’ implies the loss of something irreplaceably precious—the fleeting time of innocence, joy and lack of self-consciousness of a puppy. Puppyhood is so short—can you find it again or are our hopes and dreams chained to this short period of our lives? Scott doesn’t answer this question and I suspect he won’t. The quest is to discover whether we can return, relive, or resuscitate our lost puppies by remembering those we loved and those we’ve known. Youth is fleeting….do we try to recapture or let it go?

Laura Bailey on New Poem – lost puppies…

It is such a wonderful thing to be let off of the leash in the beautiful days of Spring. Thanks for sharing Scott!

That dreaded feeling of “where are you?” comes through this well and all those that have lost a loved one will surely engage with this.

What a gorgeous poem Scott I have left a comment on your blog I am having trouble with my internet connection so I hope it finds you!

William Bain on New Poem – lost puppies…

Hi Scott,

Thanks for writing. True, I would say about
your “Lost puppies”, in its movement towards
recognizing some of our human failings (failings
in the sense of activities, experiences). Thus I
believe it sometimes says more than enough, if
you follow me. Or seen somewhat differently, it
could negatively say some of its positivities. These
are my immediate impressions–and definitely glad
I read it, that is, I gained. Best wishes, William

P.J. Campbell on  New Poem – lost puppies…

And your soul is at last

Let off its string,

I’ve had those moments–fleeting, but heavenly.

ZQ on New Poem – lost puppies…

I really enjoyed the piece immensely… but I was limited, with global ignorance, with the term (use of) “Puppies”

Scott says: Thank you for this – I use the word puppies to indicate, in the context of this piece, a relative state of youthful helplessness.

Mary Kling on New Poem – lost puppies…

“One cannot help but sense,
For certain,
That all the love inside you
Comes from the best of those
You’ve known and loved
And those who came
And went before you too…”

Wise words here, Scott. We each are influenced by who we have known in our lives, hopefully good and wise and loving people who have shared themselves with us. These words are something to continually ponder, not only in regard to those who have influenced us but at a certain point in life we need to think about who we ourselves are influencing & how.

Brian Miller on New Poem – lost puppies…

I like the supposition that all the good in you comes from those before you and those that touched your life… and most def we should keep dreaming… Love that last stanza Scott

Gabriella on New Poem – lost puppies…

Beautiful and serene words. Scott!
“One cannot help but sense,

Beautifully expressed, Scott. I look at the world as well sometimes and am awed by what I see. It is nice to look around and appreciate the simple……when we take time to pause.

Wow..beautiful Scott sir! Indeed,we must be grateful and indebted to God, with sheer gratitude, for each new dawn and for every breath of ours…realizing,”oh, so my soul is still in the body…I am there to greet yet another day,am very much in this world, beholding the beauty of nature, so prolifically bestowed upon us to grace.”

Amidst this fake world that we witness every day, we need to pause and ponder over these bounties of nature that soothe us and refurbish us with another spring of hope and another opportunity to live!
So profound sir…God bless!

Thanks for sharing another marvel.

With fond regards
Neena

Stunning poetry… I do love to find those hidden treasures…

Freya on  New Poem – a need to pause…

Flailing – yes, indeed. We waste so much time in that state. And when we do find time to just be, to give ourselves space, after just a few moments, our minds get busy, busy, busy. A lovely, thoughtful piece, Scott.

Colleen@LooseLeafNotes on New Poem – a need to pause…

Well expressed. I always think the stopping point and even a place of boredom is where new creativity is born.

Chris Hawkes on New Poem – a need to pause…

I enjoyed your latest collection, Meditations. ‘m a Plath/Hughes enthusiast and have frequently taught courses on both, so really responded to “Sylvia and Ted” in particular, A lot of the poems here also have a Yeatsian quality – reading them, I was often reminded of “Lapis Lazuli” and “Sailing to Byzantium”, for example, in the use of metaphor and allusion.

Brendan on New Poem – a need to pause…

Beth Winter on New Poem – a need to pause…

It seems odd that after the confinement of winter, we feel the need to pause but we do. Perhaps it is the freedom of a softer world combined with the welcome rebirth that brings this need to the surface. Beautiful poetry, Scott.

Ron Shields on  New Poem – a need to pause…

To be caught so unawares can be the catalyst for finally trying to scratch below that surface. Lovely poem Scott.

Chris Hawkes on New Poem – Readers Comments…

I very much enjoyed Meditations” – thoughtful and insightful. Being a great fan of Plath and Hughes, and loving Hughes’s Birthday Letters, which unflinchingly dissects the raw pain of that relationship, “Sylvia and Ted” in particular amazed me: Scott’s poem delicately exposes the “risks taken in pursuit of meaning.”

Scott…you have captured something here that I believe we all are being asked to do. With all the continued barrage of information from daily life, we often forget to stop and take the moments as they are offered to us. To see the beauty in the simple things. For me, (as you now know from my latest article) that is in watching the marvellous heavenly landscape of clouds above me. Lovely piece!

Wendy Ann Waters on New Poem – a need to pause…

What do I like best about this offering…? Sweets in a jar, let me see … perhaps it’s “we barely scratch the surface of something so simple” yes, that’s it and may life’s sacred itch forever keep us scratching. Thank you once again, Scott… for the words. x

Nivedita Yohana on  New Poem – a need to pause…

Scott, I’ve just read your wonderful poem, a need to pause… I concur with your ideas. In midst of our busy schedules we fail to pause take a moment to see or feel or contemplate on the serenity of nature. Your words never fail to enchant me:

“We barely scratch the surface
Of something so simple.
And therefore can be
Caught so unawares … ”

Yes! Nature is deceptively simple which catches us off guard and unawares and once we submit to its swoon, the feeling it entails is peace and contentment… These feelings can be evoked by your wonderful images and beautiful words … Your words have that magical wand which transports its readers to another dimension.

Shari J LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – a need to pause…

Dear Scott,

‘A Need to Pause’ exemplifies the art of being present in the moment. Perhaps a return to the zeitgeist of essentialism [without the complications of our virtual distractions], this allows us as individuals to experience, almost as if for the very first time, a spring-like re-awakening to the marvels of our simply natural world.

Helen Moule on New Poem – a need to pause…

Woweee! So wondrous again…

Bonnie Roberts on New Poem – a need to pause…

Scott, I really like the use of the word “immune” when speaking of the end of things. Such as, here, the day. I don’t think “It’s true” adds anything to the poem. If you didn’t think it was true, I don’t think you would be writing such a passionate poem about it, huh? :) You may disagree, of course, but I also don’t think you need to tell the reader that there is a beginning and an end. I think you could go from “Slips seamlessly past” straight to “And yet . . .” I really like the image of “the child who’s way ahead”! Wonderful. Tiny typo here. “Who’s” not “Whose.” I’m not sure what you mean by “lit.” The last line “to grip and catch the light again” is absolutely superb. Makes the whole poem worth the read! Suzanne’s comments were a bit “too in the head” for me, but I often agreed with her philosophy. The poem says something to me, which I can take away with me. It’s not just “pretty words.” That ultimate meaning of wanting that second chance to reach out and “grip and catch the light again.” It’s rather where I am, personally, at 64, wanting to re-invent myself, re-inspire myself somehow. Perhaps take one last great adventure. Thank you for sharing your poetry here! Bonnie :)

Scott says: Thanks a lot Bonnie for your very open and thoughtful comments – much appreciated… Must admit, when I first read Suzanne’s excellent piece it struck me too rather that ‘Its true” did have the spotlight of the ‘self evident’ put upon it… I suppose, even with this comparatively short piece, what I was trying to do was create the effect of something gradually unfolding – starting from a simple and certain place, hence the self acknowledging phrase as a very simple sound starting point – which then goes on to gradually blossom, reveal itself, open up – eventually climaxing with the key metaphor of the light hitting the delicately enclosed pearl of very special communion again – if that makes sense? In terms of ‘lit’ think more perhaps if an illuminated runway ahead – as in a youngster inspired by a adult in their life – who is some way shows them a glimpse of things earlier than they would have ever managed on their own fledgling resources and set them on their way… In the same way that experience with a true love elevates you to a place you couldn’t access any other way, perhaps? Again, if all that makes sense… Thanks so much for all your thoughts – all the best to you Bonnie and great to know that you still yearn for reinvention and adventure – Life can always be special I think, if you give it your heart…

Scott:

Gifts are all around us, as you know. We only need to look, and experience contentment in the finding. I love what James Lawless shared from Picasso. Here’s a quote from Henry Miller that I try to live by: “Live each day as if life were a blessing, and not an ordeal.”

Dear Scott,

Wonderfully written poem presenting the things we are often miss, so caught up in the often mundane things of life. I’ve been in and out of th hospital from July 2013 to February 2014 due to a botched surgery and five consequential surgeries and haven’t been able to get to your site. Ah ..the poignancy of soul in poise..!

Wonderfully penned Scott sir, ending with a glint of hope , to discover the submerged, hidden spiritual treasures of peace, power, purity, divinity, love and Bliss within..

Great work as ever, yet short and sublime..as Brevity is the essence of Language. So touching lines…stirred the chords of my heart!

‘And however deflated
We might sometimes be,
Either by our own frailties
Or the cruelty of others,
– Inviolate –
At the core of our being,
The very prism
Of sanctity and self remains.’

Congrats Scottie sir..

Keep writing and enchanting us with your gigantic spiritual write ups.

With fond regards as ever

Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – we are anything…

Your latest poem is just so wonderful. You capture the poignant reality – transience of life so well. There is positivity in the energy of your words. I discussed your poems in one of my classes and compared it with Frost, Dickinson, Larkin and Marvell… Your poems are arrest the bitter truth with such beautiful evocation. Many poets talk about loneliness and exclude the concept of self..but you celebrate life with spirit, respect and acknowledge the existence of self or inner being. Hats off to you!!

Mary Kling on New Poem – we are anything…

This is a very deep and meditative write, Scott. And yes, we really are NOT alone & not finite. The proof, such as it is, does exist in our heart. And that is really what matters. And really nothing can ‘deflate’ us if we look within and feel what is deep inside.

Brian Miller on New Poem – we are anything…

Though often we do feel like we are alone in this great big world…..disconnected….the opportunity to become enchanted again sounds promising…

Dr. Hedva Rabinson Bachrach on  New Poem – we are anything…

In our Mystical tradition in every soul there is a sparkle of God, which is never extinct. I believe that the pain and beauty in your poem expresses this perfectly. Also never giving up, in spite of any surrounding dilemmas. It is a wonderful poem and thank you for that. Hedva

Shari J LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – we are anything…

The spirituality of this poem is best reflected in the healing strength of redemption “to become enchanted again,” and by connecting with a higher power through a confluence of souls: “Sublime moments refracted, Even if only for seconds, Caught forever in your soul.” Then we are infinite.

Shriram Sivaramakrishnan on New Poem – we are anything…

‘petals of proof’ is a nice phrase…sits beautifully in the poem…very crisp one…

Blanka on New Poem – we are anything…

I loved your piece so much, I just could not resist the urge to say something. Pardon my presumptuousness. Keep up the good work, Scott. You inspire:

We are nothing but what we make of it;
One without the other – incomplete.
We are everything we can aspire to be:
A priest, a king: the power of you and me.

We are nothing if not the people around us;
Willful, delightful, a sweet and welcome curse.
We are everything if we never hesitate –
You and me, the power of love: Inviolate.

Patti Salamone on New Poem – we are anything…

Beautiful Scott. You have a wonderful ability with feelings and words.

Adda Leah Davis on New Poem – we are anything…

Scott, I really like this poem since I believe as the old song says that “the soul of man never dies.” We harbor in our hearts/souls/ psyche all the emotions a human being can feel and as the human race has proclaimed we have passed it on. Isn’t it wonderful to know that we really aren’t limited by time . . . only our earthly existence is limited.
Adda Leah (Addie) Davis

Andrea Lampkin on New Poem – we are anything…

This is a beautiful piece on inner reflections which we all can relate to. Some of the most powerful statements are made in the softest tones and draws in those to listen who may not otherwise. I love how this poem incites me to look within.

“At the core of our being” we are truly untainted and today, I’m reminded of this by your shared reflections on humanity. Life is good always when we remember “…all the petals of proof
Are here in our hearts…” Thank you!

Octavious Sage on New Poem – we are anything…

A beautiful poetic rendition of quality personified through human life.

Rob Kim on New Poem – the day is done…

I suppose there is still hope that part of our old selves can re-emerge and live the lives we yearn for…I certainly hope so. An immaculately crafted piece of writing.

Jae Rose on New Poem – the day is done…

The uncertain things in life can certainly be the most beautiful.. and the most scary… Maybe the middle gets overlooked in our quest to describe the beginning… and the end…I say enjoy the shells… Nicely written.

Pamela Sayers on New Poem – the day is done…

Trish Shields on New Poem – the day is done…

What’s old can be new again. The patterns we see, or sometimes miss, can lead us along a merry path but it is not set in stone. Sometimes that little side branch taken can renew the path and light the way to new beginnings. I really like your use of light language on a rather deep subject as it pulls the reader along nicely. Cheers.

Rebecca O’Donnell on Recent Writing

Just started reading your beautiful poetry last night and your writing is such a soothing balm. My emotions have gone from purple and angry red to a soft green and dappled forest, all because of your words. Thank you… I was all flood-eyed over a particularly beautiful one and was so thrilled to see it was for a Rebecca. I love sharing a kinship of names with her. Take care of your magical self, my friend, and your equally magical pen.

Pamela Sayers on New Poem – the day is done…

Scott, my friend, I will hold your words closely to my inner being. Thank you for writing this.

Peace and love,
Pamela

Joel Savage on New Poem – graced…

Relating poem to aspects of human life, makes the poem more sensitive, inspirational and interesting. That is Scott’s poems. “Graced with the chance to be here,” reveals how beautiful life is and the need to appreciate it when one gets the ‘Grace’ to be in this beautiful world, yet made ugly by those who don’t understand the aspects of human life. ‘Graced’ is a beautifully written poem defining the meaningful and purpose of life.

Neena Sharma on New Poem – the day is done…

Another sensitive poem..your beautiful creativity is at its pinnacle once again.Profound conjectures…The ultimate communion with SUPREME is all that we all are looking for, to tenderly explore within our frail exterior, though unbeknown of the purpose of life; chasing our dreams.. ,in our very voyage of life…endlessly. Tarry or hurry Scott sir..Good going, as always.

Much regard
Neena

Rebecca O’Donnell on New Poem – the day is done…

Anna-Marie Docherty on New Poem – Graced…

Another great read. What direction or higher purpose have our lives? How precious each moment we are given withing the precious vessel we sail on stormiest of seas, how much we should treasure the most detailed and fragile of landscape before us… Once again you set me to ponder further…

Anna-Marie Docherty on New Poem – the day is done…

Reads beautifully, could imagine it spoken as if it were a deep meditation and was fully absorbed… Another enjoyable visit, thank you for sharing with us.

Maria Wheatley on  New Poem – the day is done…

Beautiful.

Margaret Nash on New Poem – the day is done…

Scott has expressed the human longing to capture and repeat transcendent experiences, to make them last a bit longer, all the while knowing it is a ‘heady wish’ that is rarely possible. He looks longingly ahead for ‘access again’ to new experiences, while glancing wistfully back on those he cannot recapture. The day has ended and the next will be inevitably different; we cannot relive or repeat the day that has ended—we can only hope to have another just as good.

Uma Bhurtah on New Poem – the day is done…

Very beautiful poem and inspirational words about how to finish a day that we achieved. Congratulations :)

Marina Sofia on New Poem – the day is done…

The beginning and the end were especially evocative. The stanza starting But what endures for me… is beautiful and so true in concept, but just felt a little flat compared to the melody of the other lines.

Scott says: Thanks for your thoughts Marina and you are right there – I suppose this element speaks to the challenge still ahead, whilst the rest of the poem (especially the close from there…) is deliberately ecstatic I guess…

Claudia Schoefield on New Poem – the day is done…

i’m always glad when we as adults don’t lose that sense of wonder for the journey

Grapeling on New Poem – the day is done…

There was time when i did not think this was possible..a time for a miracle and for this for true..and then hopelessness once again..forever it seemed..

is hope
again…

Thanks GOD for change..
i’ll take the desert..
if i can ever visit a garden..
again..if ever that day of
desert .. is once for me..

Björn Rudberg on  New Poem – the day is done…

A bejeweled path.. the thought and silent wonder that life is.. I really love the gentleness of this poem Scott.

Marta Merajver-Kurlat on New Poem – the day is done…

Beneath the beauty of the words and the musicality of their arrangement, I sense the blending of the unavoidable with the hope for new discovery that will keep life throbbing till the very end. The vocative “So tarry with me awhile
And we will see
What we can do
To tenderly explore
Beneath the frail shell
Of all we’ve since become” evokes in me a powerful, loving call to a partner to share in the mood of the poet, and the most striking thing about the mood running throughout the poem is acceptance devoid of bitterness, grounded on the belief that it’s still possible “to grip and catch the light again”. A remarkable attitude to our finitude and a lesson to us pessimists encased in the perfection of form.

Loiriam Jimenez on New Poem – the day is done…

This poem is good to inspire everyone who keep travelling until their day is done. :)

Don MacIver on  New Poem – the day is done…

Bridget Cameron on New Poem – the day is done…

Lovely Scott!

Elizabeth on New Poem – the day is done…

To keep that inner child and her wonder alive, we must nurture her on a regular basis. One of the reasons I remain on the poetry prompt circuit is because I periodically find that moment of communion (in your last stanza) waiting for me in my own comment section. Thank you,

Elizabeth

Loredana Donovan on New Poem – the day is done…

Yes, we can retain & relive a sense of wonder … instead of an ending, we can think of it as a new beginning. Each day is a chance to start over. I share this optimistic view of life. Lovely poem.

Eileen T O’Neill on New Poem – the day is done…

A very lively poem filled with desire and the desire to be able to continue to live and to enjoy that which we seek to discover and to taste again for the second time!!
Optimism is nicely threaded through this very uplifting poem.

Nena Black on New Poem – the day is done…

As often happens with things that touch the soul ‘the Day is done’ mirrors perfectly my feelings about my life at this juncture. I have no greater compliment nor analysis than to say I literally welled with tears upon reading it. It struck a deep, recessed chord, and set an ideal mood for my Sunday.
Simply beautiful piece, Scott, thank you.

What a lovely and most inspiring poem, Scott!

Suzanne Staveley on New Poem – the day is done…

An interesting poem that raises questions worthy of thought, which by virtue of the other comments here show it has succeeded.

It seems to me the more we experience life, the more we wonder if this is all there is, and the journey begins.

Perhaps time, space and matter are all an illusory holographic matrix of light vibrations for the purpose of acquiring sufficient experience necessary to achieve wisdom?

Cressida de Novam on New Poem – the day is done…

I like your positive outlook and expression of hope that you can hang on to that thread of wonder and possibly share it. Good Luck:)

This is another excellent poem you have constructed from the basic materials of time and light. We need to use the precious gift of time, with child-like wonder, like you say. My two favorite parts:
“What endures for me
Is a persistent resonance,” and your most powerful last line:
“To grip and catch the light again.”

Thank you for this meaningful experience.

Gratefully,

Richard

Laura Bailey on New Poem – the day is done…

These are beautiful thoughts Scott. Keeping that sense of wonder at all that surrounds us is a challenge that is met sometimes with great resistance due to worldly worries and preoccupations. However, with me, it is a habit that keeps coming back to teach me new things. And I am always curious, as you are, about many things. Thanks for posting this elegant read.

Shari J LeKane-Yentumi on New Poem – the day is done…

Perhaps our vulnerabilities, when rightly exposed, are really triggers to the soul, and are only accessible to those who are capable of mutual intimacy and love.

Scott says: Indeed Shari, I feel that too – thank you…

Beverley Golden on New Poem – the day is done…

Milan Schmotzer on New Poem – the day is done…

The light is (and has been hidden; nothing but merely always waiting) within our souls. The immortal energy patiently awaiting throughout the eons.
Just let our souls to shine brightly again for the moment lasting millions of years – ’cause that’s the only reason why we were sent here.

Your poem pleasantly caresses the human spirit, as always, our gemmy artist.

Paul Burt on New Poem – anchored…

Hi Scott,

I took a few minutes to read some of your new work and connected immediately. Hope you receive the attention you deserve! However, at the end of this piece (Would be bounty sufficient to last a lifetime?), I was puzzled by the question mark since even in rereading I couldn’t find the question.

Scott says: Thanks so much for your response to my work, Paul – I’m glad it touched you in some way – as a writer that is all one can ever hope for… Interesting you queried the question mark – You are not the first to do this and some readers are also not that happy with the last line of this poem either – ‘now there’s the rub…’ I suppose what I’m suggesting here to the reader is to consider the question for themselves of whether one truly ecstatic moment of spiritual release (were it possible…) would be worth trading in the rest of your mortal life for? Hence the question mark and ‘the rub’…

My poems don’t usually end in such a challenging way – but this notion of how some lives (rightly of wrongly and as if pre-destined…) seem to go off like a short-lived firework was something I didn’t want to let go off – having found myself surprisingly there towards the end of this piece, as it seemed to be leading me towards this dilemma – without, as you say, posing a direct question that required a definitive answer… And, of course, it is often these very same people too that can inspire and leave behind the warmest and most lingering glow in our hearts and souls – isn’t it? Which brings one on to the notion of issues like ‘sacrifice’ which I am exploring more now, in my more current work.

Hope all this ramble makes some kind of sense to you and others?? Hey! Ho!

Suraya Dewing on New Poem – graced…

Thanks Scott
I enjoyed Graced.
Have a wonderful 2014. May it give you many blessings.
All the best

Margaret Nash on New Poem – graced…

Scott beautifully and hauntingly reminds us that the only thing standing between us and the shroud are experiences of grace and enchantment. He exhorts us to, ‘Shine whilst you can, Without fear’ and in so doing to be fully alive and bring meaning to a life that we are ‘graced’ with, ‘if only fleetingly.’
Poignant and thought provoking.

Neena Sharma on New Poem – graced…

A poem portraying great wisdom, truth, sensitivity, the lurking dangers of life … Yet, all the while, ending up with a glint of hope. Take life as it comes, embracing with grace, all situations, people, things coming your way… Be sincere and faithful to your heart..listening to your heart and mind – both at the same time, preparing yourself for the life’s future contingencies… The temporal life already in flux… Brave any storms of MAYA, taking powers from the almighty, by communing with Him more often than not, regularly and religiously. God Bless.. be ever happy health sir :)!
Fond regards

Neena Sharma on If there’s an ambition

Wow… A true confession as if to the almighty and your soul brethren, Scott sir… Another profound , most sensitive portrayal of a man’s predicament while chasing an ambition or dream. It is very true that dreams and desires make you selfish, severing your ties with all; gradually… You end up becoming a solitary reaper and then subsequently, you reach the great visceral truth of submerged spirituality within. Great!

Thanks for this one..I do not know how I happened to miss it, dear esteemed friend. God Bless!
Fond regards as ever..

Rob Harle on New Poem – graced…

Your poems have a serenity and deep gentleness which is lovely.

Love the lines:

“Just as swelling fruit
Hurries towards its own sweetness,”

and the final verse of ‘Graced’ is brilliant:

“Such is true joy’s absolute certainty,
Its slow lit fuse that burns holes
In the shabby shroud of death forever.”

A great wisdom comes through in almost every verse of your poems.
Wonderful imagery and I feel calm and uplifted after reading them.

Impermanence juxtaposed against the absolute certainty of everlasting joy! Simply marvelous to see the river change neatly bent and folded into the eternity of moments my dear Scott! Freya on New Poem – graced…

Now this, this reflects so much of what is filling my mind (when I am not at work, or working on my manuscript). Life is temporary, those important moments we add weight to are generally but specks in the vastness of living… How to reconcile our every day with this reality is tough, tough work. I need to listen to those who have gone before, just a little bit harder. This is what your poem says to me, anyway.

Don MacIver on Sea spray on the Caribbean coast of Antigua…

Beautiful indeed Scott. There is a wonderful element of inspiration from such a striking image…and one of the many places on this earth I will some day see.

Don MacIver on New Poem – graced…

Scott, you are truly inspired in this time, in your way and though it may sound cliche I find myself thinking of only one word to describe your writing, your words and that word would be ‘ethereal’. And through your own inspiration the response from your reading audience clearly defines their experience.

Don MacIver on New Poem – as the years…

Scott, I’ve been away for an extended period and in the midst of a move but how very nice to come back to take in this wonderful words. You never cease to engage and inspire. The price of admission indeed… Marvellous.

Tony Maude on New Poem – graced…

This strikes me as rich poem which deserves a much deeper reading than I’m able to give it just now. However, I agree about the importance of making the most of the moments that we have. I’ve seen too many people who are either so stuck in the past or so fixated on the future that they simply don’t live in the here and now; at times I suspect I have been one of these people myself.

Ayala Zarfjian on New Poem – graced…

Inspirational and beautiful poem.

Gay Reiser Cannon on New Poem – graced…

A deft capture of the meaning of life. I posted a while back that Stephen Hawking said the only reality, the only sure thing we know is what’s in our own mind. Each person perceives reality through his/her own filter. You say this so much more profoundly and more artistically. Well done.

Scott says: Yes Gay, I do recall very well your reference to Hawking prompted by one of my earlier pieces and it no doubt played its part in getting me to Graced… That is certainly the way things work – so thanks again

Ronald E Shields on New Poem – graced…

Marta Merajver-Kurlat on New Poem – graced…

Dear Scott, no philosophy of life is comprehensive unless it includes a philosophy of death. You have mastered both beautifully, with pathos and naturalness, which don’t always go well together, but you have the precious gift of matching the sweet with the sour, and by your poetic gift turning the sour into another facet of the sweet.

Dr Jelka Samsom on Scott Hastie 39…

Dear Scott,

Am I surprised looking at your newest pictures, being quite familiar now with your poetry? No. Your thoughtful look, your kind smile are completely in harmony with the precious words you write down on paper. Feeling touched? Yes.

I too, tripped a bit on the heart as queen. For me, that would better be a continuously nurtured and growing soul seeking its own sweetness so as to share it. Otherwise, I found agreement, delight, and satisfaction in your well written words. Glad I found you and shall return,

Elizabeth

Rallentanda on New Poem – graced…

Thank you for a very inspirational poem.Making the heart one’s queen, like a ripe bursting fruit is a question I have pondered a lot, as acute joy is almost always accompanied by acute pain in hot pursuit.

The choice between having a safe faux fawn feeling free zoned life compared with one of sensory joyous overload was however determined for me before I (of the basket case variety) was born.So in reality I am stuck with myself with essential added modifications to ensure survival in an ever increasing conformist secular and materialistic world.

I say not only gaze at those stars in the night sky but raise your hand up and pluck one out of the firmament, place it gently to your lips and live in awe of our marvellous universe and its creator.

Lovely and uplifting words Scott ~ Thanks for sharing ~

Loredana Donovan on New Poem – graced…

Life is certainly a gift that we are graced with … despite challenges, we always have a chance to shine. Beautiful thoughts. I don’t take issue with the use of “heart” as an earlier reader did. I think the heart usually knows best. When we intellectualize things too much instead of feeling them, we may miss out on the more spiritual meaningfulness.

Mary Kling on New Poem – graced…

This is beautiful, Scott. Such thoughtful words on life. I like the idea that we are graced with the chance to be here, even if fleetingly. Those words intrigued me immediately, as I consider life such a valuable gift which we need to appreciate each day. I like the idea of making your heart the queen, as I think that as we do live we do need to listen to our heart.. Which will lead us in the direction we are meant to go!

Diane Robinson on New Poem – graced…

Wonderful poem, Scott. Deep, emotional, and moving. The words and meaning flow so true and freely. Yes, meditation can get us to that place where our mind becomes calm and free to create. Beautiful.

Joel Savage on New Poem – graced…

‘Graced’ like most of your poems is emotional, touching and inspirational. I wonder if your inspirational poems relate to your experience or the experience of people close to you. A great poem with a caring message.

Scott says: Thanks for this, Joel – I guess the answer is a bit of both… along with some of what I consider to be imaginative and spiritual forward projections – arising out of meditation practices and resultant calm, seeking reflection on life’s dilemmas, challenges and opportunities…

Sherman L. Bailey on New Poem – graced…

” Brilliantly written, conceived in the heart and soul of a man that clearly knows what he’s talking about.”

Dr. Jelka Samsom on New Poem – graced…

Hi dear Scott,

One of the reasons why I love your work is that it always conveys a message of hope. Life is a “chance”! “Embrace whatever comes your way”! And even if you lose some hidden treasures whilst following your heart “faithfully” and “bravely”, do not worry…try simply to continue your personal journey.

Thank you again, Scott!

Bridget Cameron on New Poem – graced…

Yes, to live in the shadow of death’s grace gives life meaning and dedication. Well done!

Brain E. Wakeman on New Poem – graced…

I liked the thoughts and language rhythm of the first stanza.

A few thoughts:

The idea of making your heart your queen made my eyebrows rise.
I guess it depends on what we mean by heart. If feelings, then I see dangers in unrestrained feelings driving me.
If by ‘heart’ you mean centre of consciousness, or reasonings of person then I am in less danger of the distortions and self rather than other-regarding tendencies we may have.

Finally if burnt holes in shabby shrouds is all we have to look forward to then we are “of all men most miserable”.

I wonder if you have a further piece on “hope” for the future now and hereafter?

As usual, you have masterful control of language and rich expression with beguiling rhythm.

Best wishes,

Brian

Scott says:

Thanks Brian, good to have your detailed observations – Yes, I recognise the concern you have here re: driven by feelings alone and certainly did intend to use ‘heart’ in a broader context – your notion of ‘centre of consciousness’ sums up my intention pretty perfectly – in terms of a kind of litmus test, if you like… Some reassurance that we all have, should we choose to use it, a reliable inner place to go from which to draw the strength/courage to recognise and then follow what we instinctively know to be our true path at key moments. And this despite any conflicting surface rationales and emotions, or the possibilities of hollow short term gratifications and vanities… The seductions of compromise, as well as the inevitable feelings of anxiety (and risk!) that are all also too likely to also bubble to the surface and inhibit potential opportunities for your soul to flower as it should.

Though challenging, my intention was for the piece to be read more optimistically – hence the key final three lines are intending to suggest that if you live true -then, in the best of your moments, you become the light and radiant energy that shines eternally through the shabby shroud of death ‘ rather than the holes themselves… If that makes sense? Though I recognise that this transmutation is a big leap of faith spiritually for some – hence the earlier lines: “not even the fissures of loss and decay…” that look to set this up.

I agree with you that a balance is important in terms of the overall tenor what you offer to the reader, in terms of any creative and philosophic exploration and already have a piece in mind for next month that explores the available terrain for more immediate mortal fulfilment.

Thanks again for your time and consideration Brian, always good to hear your thoughts – which help keep me on my toes!

Shari J LeKane-Yentumi on  Poem – graced…

Dear Scott, I agree that life on earth is a temporal station in our biological shell of decay, but as you so rightly proclaim, only a state of grace transcends our preoccupation for vanity, pride and material things; only a state of grace can bring true joy in this life and in the hereafter….

Scott, You’ve dealt with our mortality in a very beautiful way. There are some things over which we have no control except to hurry them along. I feel it is wonderful to awaken each day with great expectations and not feel disappointed if we have seen nothing magnificent, but can realize, “Hey, I’m still alive and have an opportunity of seeing another day. Who knows something marvelous may happen on that day. As you can see I’m an optimism addict.

Be thankful for all small mercies, for indeed ‘nothing is inevitable’… Take opportunities and new openings as they happen – don’t want to miss that boat! Great write.

Scott, I loved your new poem for 2014, such imagery and emotions. I found myself floating as I was reading, imagining all the little details that you have placed in such few words. I could feel the darkness closing around as death crept up and it is so true, we must live each day and embrace whatever may come. Looking forward to reading more of your work.

A beautiful capture. Dazzling and detailed the frame yes, but how much more does the image speak to you… Thanks for sharing!

Anna Marie Docherty on New Poem – as the years…

Love how geographics, time, energy and spirituality, have all been encompassed into this poem. Time, space and placement seem to have so much hold on what will be in our lifetime. How many of us stop to realise the potential of our own lot? How many of us see the disasters and scars others face and hold, those so often so much worse off than ourselves. How much better then our own circumstance, how much more then should we be grateful for what we have/hold in so many circumstances…

Oh my how these words speak to me – as realisation of what has passed and where I am in life today. Life can turn on a sixpence, throw all your dreams up in an instance and yet from it if welcomed can come a richness which otherwise may never have been realised. Sometimes we need be still to realise we are not always in control of our destiny but we can welcome what comes our way and make the most of it… An enjoyable and thought provoking read.

How beautifully this is written, gently drawing the eye down and through with great imagery…

This is a beautiful poem full of imagery that you can not forget. It also give us a lot to consider about nature and really makes one think. A great poem is one with different levels like this one.

Your work is very insightful and imaginative. I get the sense that you are speaking directly to me in the way that music speaks to a person’s core being. Keep on keeping on…
