AUTHOR STATEMENT:
My poetry looks to positively explore human potential, with an emphasis on love, spiritual growth and self awareness. It is very important to me that my work remains as open, accessible and as simply expressed as possible. My influences vary from the great traditional English visionary romantics through to the distillation of thought and leanness of expression offered by the Japanese haiku tradition, the shining examples of Rilke and Gibran, as well as later technical breakthroughs achieved by leading Scottish concrete poets Ian Hamilton Finlay and Edwin Morgan.
WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:
“To write and sell poetry at a profit these days is a minor victory and a major achievement. Scott’s words gently unlock and force you to face and look at the world with a little more optimism. There are moments of deep joy and others, which take your breath away with simple incredible honesty”
G. White
“Scott Hastie’s verse is sympathetic, humanistic and positively affirmative. Accessibility is the touchstone of all Hastie’s output. The spiritual element in his writing is clear.”
G.E. Jones
“Scott writes meditative, reflective poetry that is steeped in the traditions of English verse. Concise and richly evocative, he should be widely read.”
R. Godwin

Dear Scott, thank you very much for a lovely spirit of words and it goes deep into the heart and crosses the soul. Thank you very much for awakening the self…
Roopika on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
This is a lovely poem which touched my heart especially “simply surrender in moments, As best you can,” easy to say difficult to follow as we have to shred our egos, connections of emotions, ownership, and all our bindings which is in line with our own belief system and list of wants. Scott, I love you so much and the poems which you have written are eye openers. I promise, will start to surrender to the moments. I have crossed the ocean of past and future, always my mind will be blank without any plans for myself and my people around. That is the best what I have learnt in my life…a bit of emotional bindings if I cross I think, what you said is possible to be with the ultimate spirit The journey is on my dear divine soul….Thank you very much…these kind of thoughts will push me forward to walk towards the light.

“Gilded chariots
That our spirits ride out,
But for a hallowed moment in time.”
This passage really spoke to me deeply. As a grandfather twice over, my chariot has lost much of its gilding and now creaks and groans at every turn of the road. The end of my hallowed moments seems vaguely imminent, making the moments more precious.
Lukman Clark on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…

Neena Sharma on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
True Scott sir.
Our bodies are the chariots and we as souls can dive within to experience the stillness of divine spirit within during our mortal sojourn on earth, no matter howsoever the tapestry of our life … Whether full of pathos or juxtaposed with pleasure and pain… We emerge triumphant in the whole journey , for peace and happiness is never far away … And it is a journey not a destination.
Wow! Brilliant profound marvel from a true artist. So sensitively and tellingly portrayed!

Aria Ligi on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
Lovely poem. The end paragraph though is where he comes rushing through in great and triumphant thunder. Read:
For we truly are,
As we come to recognise
Ourselves to be,
Mere receptacles.
Gilded chariots
That our spirits ride out,
But for a hallowed moment in time.
The merest splash of presence
In the serried halls of wonder.
These are the moments that magic and great poetry are made of.
Ashlie Allen on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…

Shari LeKane Yentumi on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
Thank you for the wonderful poetry
Don MacIver on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
Scott, it is most interesting that you should write this in this time. Of late I have had increasingly greater moments to pause…reflection on existential things and truly what we are and what our significance and purpose is on this vast earth. Then there is a much broader consideration as we look beyond the horizon of the seas and heavenward to limitless depths of space. Receptacles indeed and seemingly here for a mere century or much less. Perhaps these thoughts, these engagements come with greater frequency as age is finite in more relative terms. Four times in is simply insufficient reading…I shall return!

Humbird on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
As always you are embarking deeply…I like that opportunities for us are benevolent whatever we choose to pursuit, and indeed this is the precious moment of present. Love the image of chariots, it’s always about the choice.
Richard Havenga on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
Scott:
Good poem from a great Poet. I especially like:
“As we come to recognise
Ourselves to be
Mere receptacles.”
I often pray for the Holy Spirit to fill me; a mere vessel.
~ Richard ~
Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
Your lovely poem came uncannily at the moment, I needed to hear these words. You are truly my angel guiding me through this journey through your divine incantation. As you rightly say we are mere receptacles of the energies we attract or the energy of the divine providence shaping and molding us just as a sculptor would, to a piece of stone. I absolutely loved the lines:
“Gilded chariots
That our spirits ride out,
But for a hallowed moment in time.
The merest splash of presence
In the serried halls of wonder.”
which beautifully sums up the eternal truth that many sages and philosophers achieved after spending years on meditating and conferring. The truth is in the present. It reminds me of Rainer Maria Rilke
“Let everything happen to you
Beauty and terror
Just keep going
No feeling is final”
and Walt Whitman who says “Happiness, not in another place but this place…not for another hour, but this hour.”
I really love the way you view life with such endearing detachment and embracing life’s moments, the stillness and the crescendo of silence that engulfs the fleeting moments of life. The mystical aura that hangs around us is subdued by the white noise around us. Your words swim in the pool of such virtuosity and sanctity, Scott… amazing!!!
I am sure your words are reaching far and wide comforting, sustaining, assuring and validating life itself! just as they are to me.
With lots and lots of love,
Nivedita

Elizabeth on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
It takes a certain type of grace to see our own fragility in that much larger picture. Even more to write about it in that musing tone and thought provoking manner. Thank you,
Shari Jo LeKane Yentumi on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
As you ride your “gilded chariots” between the ancient and the contemporary through the “serried halls of wonder,” there is no doubt that the timeless wonder of transformational mindfulness brings a heightened enlightenment to the tantric union of which you speak so eloquently in your poetry, Dear Scott. Best wishes always.

This poem especially resonates with me, now that I am living in Japan. The rich tapestry of this country’s heritage harks back thousands of years and forms a scrim through which all is experienced here. Without a sense of all that has nurtured ourselves as members of a culture, we are but knee jerk puppets trapped in a cocoon of immediate fleeting sensory data.
Mary on New Poem – whenever you can conjure…
Thinking of ourselves as mere receptacles is a unique way of look at ourselves. And I like that there is a sense of the ancient hanging in the air because it shows the timeless nature of being.

I guess the first step is to look within..
and truly for years.. it is all external..
a rat race.. of energies stolen..
perhaps a couple of hours
on an Interstate road..
or a power outage
from storms..
sooner or
later if
we are lucky
as fate will have it..
a draw within makes
human painting come fuller

Scott, thanks for including this stirring poem over at dVerse OLN, for I don’t mind getting into your huge queue of admirers & supporters. Benjamin Alexander De Mers on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Dear Scott,
Long I have imagined that someone would pick up the pen of the scribes of the Vedas and bring the journey of the Soul into the modern era! Good on you that you have bravely and soulfully done so. I look forward to talking with you in various media as I feel a kindred soul in you.
Many blessings to you kind and known but unknown soul,
Benjamin
Jack Haight on New Poem – always stay loyal…
“From my perspective, in order to appreciate Scott’s poetry, you cannot
simply read them: you must be willing to dwell in them. There is nothing
didactic about his work. This NOT a “How to Live a Meaningful and
Authentic Life for Dummies” book. In that very sense, I believe the people
who would be most attracted to his work are the people who already know the
essence, the core of his work. The experience for these people is then
going to be more like experiencing a written mantra. There is a great
feeling of both confirmation and affirmation, that yes, this is the way,
the truth and the light.
I find that his work has a great affinity with
the great Eastern traditions of thought. Although it is never stated,
there is a note of passive resistance to his work. There is the assertion
that in the face of this frenzied, materialistic world of ours, the meaning
of life is NOT to be found in “MORE!” and “FASTER!” It is to be found in
the silence of self-realization, that place beyond words wherein lies the
most profound of our understanding and comprehension.
Gratefully, I find no hint of evangelism in Scott’s work, no suggestion
that “I am the keeper of truth, and therefore everyone should think and feel like me…”
No, he is simply offering an invitation. I do not find it at all surprising that
his work encompasses a great deal of photography. For me, the secret to
great photography is to have what’s known as a “good eye,” to have the
right focus, the right perspective. Scott’s message is that you will
experience joy, serenity and a profound sense of meaning if you have the
right focus, the right perspective. From this point of view, you will
truly be able to celebrate being alive.”

A perfect voice to hear of on a Sunday – your poem. This is well-written, subtle way of reminding our limitations as humans.
Xerxes Aga on New Poem – always stay loyal…
We Zoroastrians believe (Yes, I am a Zoroastrian) that God implants a fragment of Himself in our souls when we are born. This fragment we call the Farohar. It stays with us throughout our lives. It is a silent observer. Never interfring with the decisions we make or the acts we perform. Yet it is a constant, though subconscious, reminder of the divinity within us. This being so, our lives are guided, unbeknown, to the righteous way. Unless, through sheer perversity, we stray.
Your poem, to me, is an affirmation of this belief.
May Ahura Mazda be with you. Always.
Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – always stay loyal…
I read this poem, not once but at least eight to ten times. It is so uncanny. The words you have so beautifully carved out in your poem came as a harbinger in the dawn as an answer to the questions which were haunting me lately.
The answer was precisely in the first lines “always stay loyal to that which feeds your soul”. In life, I have always stayed true to my inner voice. However lately I was in an introspective mood and questioning myself and all the decisions I had taken. I was wondering if I did the right thing by following ardently and audaciously to my inner voice or should I have just adhered to the norms of the society and catered to the expectation of every
one.
It is not easy to stay loyal to your inner calling – often lonely with lot of challenges to face resulting in unhappy people whose expectations were not fulfilled and a dissatisfied society judging you harshly. It is more poignant in traditional societies like India.
Though, in the end, listening to your inner voice always pays off. The soul is there for a reason, not to be taken for granted, but to honour it as best as we can in order to become truly fulfilled beings.

Nice poem Scott.
Don MacIver on New Poem – always stay loyal…
Scott, as always I find such a deeply profound engagement with your words. That “gathering readiness” and “content” of which you speak rings so true. I managed two successive independent retirement living properties over a five year period and my experience with the residents was truly remarkable, your words given reference here a direct correlation with what I observed so clearly in so many of our dear friends there in their final stages of life. I came to realize and understand much in that time, their time.
So good to see what you have shared here.
Lisa Miller on New Poem – always stay loyal…

Adrienne Miranda on New Poem – always stay loyal…
Scott, Your poem is moving, inspiring and very profound. The soul is the center of our being and saturates all emotions, responses and ones divine nature. When we listen, reflect and are aware of eternal life our soul is hungry to give, love, share, and embrace others. Our soul is the light that illuminates from within and shows humankind who we really are. May each of us be led by our soulful light that shines brightly telling us to act in kindness and to love one another. How joyful and rich.

JT on New Poem – always stay loyal…
Greetings Scottie
This new poem captures the depth of an endless dream. It is evocative yet hopeful for the human wellspring of goodness. We live in dire times. People lose faith, abandoned by their positive spirit for lightness. I believe your elegant poem makes us wonder about the affirmations we tend to take for granted, most of all, this is a human-based poem. it knows how to feel & it knows how to love. Thanks for your kindness.
Mickey on New Poem – always stay loyal…
First, before I read your poem, I want to speak of the drape of your eloquent hand that speaks of the most elegant of mudras a Buddha like you could evoke, as if ribbons of twining light spilled through rich blood flowers to us from off the screen. I see an initiation string in the langour of your right wrist. Your open forehead furrows diminishing concern, and I’m happy about that. You crouch easily, so I think you are Hatha yoga fit. You look relaxed into your skeleton, and a little bit tired. You seem present, authentically, yet I could not guess what you are thinking. I will come back tomorrow. I must sleep now in Cincinnati . . .
Love from one of the world’s fools,
M

X on New Poem – always stay loyal…
As we go about our lives, giving little bits of ourselves away to those that need it – we constantly need to be filling our own cup. Turning inward to that well of light so that it replenishes us. If we don’t – we eventually run out and run down – because our own energy/our own power is never enough.

Time to stop and take stock, to rest within ourselves and contemplate before making decisions or taking action. A kind of time out to make sure we do what will sit right within ourselves and bring with it peace and stillness for the soul. Great writing… contemplative in itself.

The photos! – You are a visual poet as well. I was mesmerized.
Gina Greenlee on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
I love everything about this poem especially how its theme physically evokes a calm in me. The theme is close to my heart: stillness, minimizing distraction, awareness that our restlessness has more to do with what’s inside us, not outside. Truly nourishing, Scott. I’m glad to have discovered your work.
J.Z Murdock on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
As always Scott, you play us like a well learned instrument. Your artful words as keys to evoke the deepest sentiments in our hearts, leaving us to reflect and feel until that state you have selected for us has overtaken and transported, leaving us only to realize that Mr. Hastie has done it to us yet again in that wonderful way of his.
It’s also a pleasant thing to learn from and better understand how to, from what you do.
Thank you, Sir.
Cheers!
Sharalee Podolecki on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
I love the simplicity and lightness with which this heavy philosophy is treated. Well done! A bit heavy on the commas, but an overall well-written poem!
Eleanore Trumkiewicz on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
A beautiful piece, evocative, transcendent.
I stumbled in two places:
> Stanza 2, line 3, beginning with the pronoun “This” … That pronoun is amorphous, feels fuzzy and indistinct, and doesn’t seem attached to an idea (concrete or abstract). I’d prefer to see the phrase “This _______” with a clarifying subject, or to see the phrase written another way to avoid the use of “This” altogether.
> Stanza 5, line 1, the phrase “it is what it is” … The phrase is a cliche, in the first place, and in the second place, such a jarringly fatalistic note that it sounds discordant with the rest of the poem.
Nonetheless, a lovely work, and one I’ve marked as a favorite to reread. Thank you for sharing!
Scott says: Thanks Eleanore for your detailed consideration…Such careful readings and responses are always appreciated…
I suppose, in terms of the overall narrative, for me this was written with the intention of an interpretation that the ‘This’ you refer to is tied to the stillness; albeit in the previous stanza.
As for: ‘it is what it is’ this was an a deliberate attempt to take a conventional cliche and spiritually transform it and broaden out the truth of it far beyond fatalism… Dressing it as I do with an endless and unfathomable patience that leaves ALL doors open – rather than a life condition that seems disconnected with our hopes, dreams and our heart – in other words not necessarily harsh, cruel or already predicated… Thanks again for your thoughts.
John Lysaght on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
A wonderful and helpful thought, to be an active participant in our daily lives, responsible for our own happiness as we pause to manage the twists and turnings of our lives so to absorb the wonders of each day for now and tomorrow. One should quiet external noises whenever possible and allow the
uniqueness of the day to penetrate.

Viv Blake on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
I take heart and surrender to your words.
Madeleine Begun Kane on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Lovely. I felt a strong Shakespearean influence.
<strong>Scott says:</strong> Thanks so much Madeleine – of course nowhere near the master of voice himself!
But what you say really hits a target for me and is very pleasing – because so few spot what you have done…
I suppose partly because technically, the fact that I write in such a modern way obscures the truth of it for most folk…
But that truly core Shakespearian influence has always been central to my entire development and ambition as a writer -in terms of looking to find and polish a telling and musical voice of my own, as a poet.
Albeit in ‘free verse’ as some insist on calling it… or indeed lyrical prose – whatever… Who cares about the labels!! As in any art form, its the quality and resonance of work that matters – nothing else… Thanks for sharing your insight.
Other Mary on New Poem – as we toil and spin…

Carolyn Bean on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
I enjoyed your poem very much, and shared it on my Caron Allan facebook page, where others enjoyed it too!
Linda Krushke on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
I like that this ended with a resignation to contentment — at least that’s what I saw. Life can be difficult, but there are also blessings, and to be content in all things is better than being bitter for the difficulties. Peace, Linda
Glenn Buttkus on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Hey, nice to meet you, Scott; but I must mention, I have never got in a comment queue that was over a 100 souls strong; I like your poem a lot, though–for as a man over 70, I had to practice these insights you offer in order to ride the chaos bitch, ward off the banshee bites, fend off the lobbyist 1% demons, & find that my lifelong pursuit of poetics was the air beneath my wings.
Marina Sofia on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
How lovely to see you hear again – it’s been too long!
I like the last three lines but the ones that really struck a chord with me were:
A raw and unnecessarily restless
Sadness in our hearts.

I always love a good re-read.. and yes this is what I still think.
Sheila Good on New Poem – as we toil and spin…

The world is so full with beauty. And yet we are so empty and finding the beauty in things which can never be beautified. The images you shared, really made my day.

Dear Scott: I love your website and your inclusion of the interesting comments of your readers.
I see you progressing. A book you might love is “Staying Alive: Real Poems for Real Times” edited by Neil Astley, published by BloodAxe. It is a compendium of poems collected under different themes.
“A book must be an axe which smashes the frozen sea within us.” Franz Kafka
Your poem intrigued me, so I had to read rapidly the first time. I believe that the last lines could be:
with a patience
inestimable.
simply surrender
as best you can.
I realize this may change up the number of lines you may have wanted to include, however the brevity and exposure of these thoughts without accoutrement make your message stronger.
You know I love your work, your website, your fans and especially your determination to keep improving.
Warmest Regards, O’Baire
Margaret Nash on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
The unspoken reference in the first line is to the lilies of the field who ‘neither toil nor spin yet are gloriously arrayed.’
We choose to toil and spin, to be distracted with the exigencies of life, so miss out on the carefree life of the lily. Instead we create raw and restless sadness.
The only solution is to pause and be still like the flower, allowing life to be what it is and shine on us patiently, and trust that the effect of these pauses is somehow cumulative and will provide us with some modest relief from the ‘vain distractions.’
Pensive and optimistic…
Ronnie Shantz/Robinson on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
I can certainly understand the ongoing undercurrents of deceit. Aprapo, great poem. Keep it up.
Nivedita Yohana on Glorious South America…
You not only create magic with your words but also with photography. They are all worthy to be in a gallery or in an exhibition.
Nivedita Yohana on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Your poem is absolutely brilliant. This is precisely what I am going through . What you write is absolutely true. Admidst all the toil and hustle and bustle of life, we need to indeed find our serenity. It is a reminder to go back to our roots and be in touch with our soul and search for that inner light. All your poems are so deeply philosophical, they truly come from a higher dimension.
Aria Ligi on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
The heart of this is the last stanza:
And simply surrender in moments,
As best you can,
Even if only in modest ripples
That gently caress
The shore of your dreams.
Sweet and heartfelt. Simply lovely.
Steven Carver on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Hi Scott – that’s a beautiful poem.
Don Carroll on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
This piece speaks volumes to me. the third stanza is like a lightning rod stanza for me. obviously one has to do a lot of retreating to start to swirl around a lot of deceitfulness. great title too.

Scott,
It’s been awhile, and it sounds great. One interesting question for the poets, is do we do ourselves a disservice by conforming to old capitalization standards. I don’t have an answer.
Really nice sentiments. The meter and sound is really great. I appreciated the read. The sound, the fury, and the tender heartbeat of a globe? That’s what I get.
Sherry Marr on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Oh I love this – such wise advice. This present moment is inestimably precious. We need to remember how soon it will be gone. Thanks for this reminder, Scott.

Your words, almost oracular, are always just what I need to read, at the precise moment I need to read them. Thank you.
CC on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
This part is very thought-provoking:
“Look how we fashion instead
A raw and unnecessarily restless
Sadness in our hearts.”
I think that we do sometimes fashion an unnecessarily restless sadness within ourselves….we fashion it when it doesn’t need to be there and then we feed it and cultivate it and let it grow exponentially.
Lori Triggs on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
A wonderful write with creatitity.

Roda on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Hello Scott … very sweet of you… Did read it again and again to truly breathe it in. The last verse is particularly poignant … as I have been feeling so restless lately. So much poetry flows out from me that I am at present just doing nothing but playing on my i-pad. I don’t know what to do with all the poetry I have written. Four books are lying in draft form which I just want to forget about … just tired of working so hard for so long. Sorry to spill my heart here. It was a pleasure to read your poem too. Regards Roda

Hello my friend!
Your words will ring truth to many! We must take from this life all the light that is given us and take the dark not with sadness, but try to extract all the good from the abyss and only then bundle it in a pretty bow drowning the hurt but always hold its lesson!!!!
Thank you for teaching me Scott!!!!

“This is beautifully penned. When I am out with nature, I always capture something that inspires me to write, some blossom starting to bloom on a tree, the scent of it, as it drifts on the breeze, a fluttering butterfly upon a flower. I take a photograph, so I have the memory stored. It is so important to capture those times, when you are not rushing. Sometimes you just need to relax, look around you, for everything is poetry. Thank you so much Scott.

Katie Mia Frederick on Glorious South America…
Ah.. thanks for sharing all theses beautiful photos of South America and the natives there are certainly as beautiful as the landscape.. as the indigenous wild spirit of life can be so alive in these lands farthest away from the ‘start’.. as the nomads with ‘wilder’ genes among us travel farther to gain the greatest fruits of life…
But anyway.. my dream was always to marry a woman like ‘that’ so the Pacific Islander part of that still remains true for me.. as there is nothing more beautiful to me than the exotic wild of indigenous beauty FREE!..:)
Katie Mia Frederick on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Ah yes.. the quiet moments of harmony of emotions and senses that come with a mind and body in balance in the most wonderful animal present of now..
And we humans are so truly distracted now.. by a full platter served up now.. almost from birth.. of cultural noise and images that keep us in the plays of someone else’s directed life instead of creating our own..
ADDITIONALLY.. as life is recorded in associations with the past through material goods and other cognitive symbols of the mind AS well as constant worry over what can be multiplied by all the illusory fears we feed our minds.. for an illusory mind of the future THAT IS often steeped in FEAR…
For me the practice of dance and creativity in all ‘free verse’ forms takes me into the peace of present but truly to escape mind distractions are easiest for me with free flowing dance.. where emotions.. senses.. become regulated.. and integrated.. as a ‘wholistic’ human animal rather than a life spent in head with a disconnect of the body that is mind too..:)
Richard Havenga on New Poem – as we toil and spin…

Xerxes Aga on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Your poem makes one stop and ponder the present. Savour it. Treasure it. For the present instantly segues into the past. The present is the most fleeting of all tenses. The past is forever. The future unknown. The present repels adhesion yet it is the stuff of all memory. So breathe in the moment. Smell the grass. Let the waves caress your toes. Kiss a girl. Memories are made of such moments.

Once again the words are luminous like a thousand suns & moons at dawn. this reflective piece conjures up visions + images of an ocean uncurling. the sea is a metaphor for the restlessness of life. i especially am connected to poetry that is grounded as well as exuding a unique kinetic energy. work should remind us that toil is the reward & not the consequence of our personal sacrifices. kudos to you scott. yet another affirming poem that spins its own colours onto an invisible, white canvas.
Mark Davis on New Poem – as we toil and spin…
Life offers many beginnings with only one ending, eternity. Savor the moment because it may not come this way again. Life comes at you like waves from the ocean. Either you crest with the motion or become submerged with the tide. In end the pillars of life will collapse for all of us but the summation of moments define our true reality.
An excellent poem. You have great talent for the written word. Look forward to more. Mark Davis
Bjorn on New Poem – as we toil and spin…

Pushkar Bisht on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
I have always observed that “There is tremendous energy in this universe, if one is awake then he will realize it otherwise if he is asleep, he is lost in darkness. Science says, nothing happens without energy. Your poem reminds of Albert Einstein, famous formula, E=MC2 it means Engery is equal to mass and speed of light….Every atom when combined in numerous quantities at one point, it bursts violently and moves the world a lot. Divine energy is best of all energies because it is what makes us feel peaceful, thoughtful, deep, pure, light & beautiful in thoughts…..

Deborah Hodge on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
This poem is genuinely stunning and moving my friend. It resonates with my soul. You have captured the essence of life in an intricate chain. I could visualise each part of a chain, reliant on the next for force, and never ending. Each link leading to other. It’s great mastery of words and I love all your work. Such a tonic in today’s fast paced need for celebrity culture. Thank you for sharing.
Nivedita on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
It’s beautiful. It is pregnant and bursting with life force. Its a deeply spiritual poem. You lace all your poems elegantly with the ephemerality of life, simultaneously bringing forth the permanence of spirit and how well you surface such magnificent thoughts through powerful imagery is in fact ingenious.
Your choice of words such as: “intricate chain”, “fleeting moment”;”Tentative soul’s journey”;”A fateful knock at your door That will surely come again”;”And when it bursts forth
Tis a wonderfully furious thing” are indeed brilliant!!! Every word and every space in between those words, can tell volumes. Amazing!!! Hats off to you!!!
Margaret Nash on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
Wow! This poem hit me in the gut—I find it rather dark. So our choice is to keep the hollow dreams of the chain going, or resign ourselves to fate and the inevitable knock at the door. But we can at least take comfort in the knowledge that the forces of the universe will supply us with some wonderful bursts of energy now and then that will keep us going.
I like it, but it’s rather stoical, and I’m not sure it’s a philosophy I want to surrender to.
Did I read this right, Scott?
Scott says: Hiya Margaret, Thank you, as ever, for your very open, careful and generously considered thoughts on this piece – much appreciated… I guess ‘it is what it is’ and what you take of it is inevitably reflective of where we are on out journey, at any one time… I’m not sure about stoical – I see it more as a sharing of a certain level of knowing and feeling… – more in line with Nivedita’s perhaps less fearful interpretation above? For me, it is all around an awareness that life is a double edged sword of wonderful and powerful opportunities & challenges – all the while provided by benevolent subliminal forces that ideally we should approach with bravery and in good spirit… Easier to say, harder to do, for sure!! But I guess the key phrase in that respect is: “to keep bringing light to bear…” And, if living fully and, as we do so, remembering we are forever approaching these tipping points of spiritual destiny – where we will always still have the precious liberty to go one way or the other – so that choice is forever ours… Hope that makes sense!

Mickey on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
A poem in twilight language may be nicely commented upon in the same language:
If I Were Fire
I could move like a changeable leaf
wrapping and curving on the edges
while my central vein bent with the dry wind.
Shape-shifting, pliant,
dripping and stretching. Hot aspiring
to a cool blue God.
If I were fire you’d think me to a peanut between your eyes.
You’re only just now getting the trick of fixing me there
and are sure you’re changing too—you see me outside your brow.
You watch me flickering to your breath.
You inhale through full lips, soft tongue
and then pulse out a gentle nudge of air that yawns me
in a soft stretch off my wick, my spine.
A shirt on a pole drying in the backyard.
A flat Indiana farm.
If I were fire, I’d sheath around your flesh,
burn you like noon’s gaze, cape you under orange light.
I’d consume the hair all over you, the grasses
on the open plain, and then, when you were clean,
I’d love your spine as mine and all your limbs would wear me.
Scott says: Astonishing Mickey… The sheer glory of your realised spirit puts me in the shade and yet pulls me in to the light… Brilliant!

Time flows faster than anyone would like it to, and I feel that it’s important we take the time to enjoy the true upbringing we have been blessed with. It is interesting to see people change from one day to the next, and it is amazing what the human condition delivers. In the grand scheme of things I believe it is best to enjoy every waking moment that we are given. So many people let the negative side of life bother them, and it is a sad thing to see. Which is why I always feel sympathetic for those who feel that way. Ultimately it is up to the person to determine what life path they choose, but it doesn’t mean that they have to be alone. This poem spoke a lot to me, and I’m thankful for reading it.
Laura Laveglia on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
Hi Scott!
This was a spiritual piece and it took me many reads to ingest.
The Human race is like a game of dominos. As one opens the door of light it can trigger many others to see goodness and when this door opens it travels like wild flower!

Rev. Bob Mitchell on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
Scott,
I love the way you use language. I’d be a phony if I claimed to understand poetry — it has always been a challenge for me.
I usually end up having someone explain it, and then the light goes on for me.
Speaking of light going on — as a Christian, these lines really spoke to me:
And so the challenge
Is a simple one,
To keep bringing light to bear.
For me, I mean the light of Christ, of course.
Thanks for sharing — all the best — blessings and shalom!

Jessica Klein on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
I understand from your poem that grace exists and with each act the time between is incomprehensible. If I continue to live I need to do in front of me the recourse that allows purity into my ways. It’s interesting you bring up conjoined as explicit sexual energy shared. That’s the only, I think, predictable desire which brings forth life…infantile, curious, and needing affection. I believe that this poem points out that actually between moments of grace a knock returns its call with a, “Okay, follow the path of courage or try to reach a dream that’s not particular, been there done that.” So, I understand you to say it’s rare to see a singular, intelligent, passion be the cohort in a sudden gesture of frenzy. I believe that too. People are too distracted. Why do you capitalize every first word of the stanza? It’s not really correct form…I learned that in school. I suppose you have a good reason. Just curious. Thanks for the great poem.
Scott says: Thanks for your thoughtful comments on the meaning of the poem, Jessica. With regards to capitalisation – whilst I realise not perhaps the most contemporary form, traditionally that’s always how it has been over here – in terms of our great literary heritage and a tradition that stretches all the way back to the seminal Romantic poets, Shakespeare and far beyond… The same writers that so inspired me during my own school studies and I guess I’ve just stuck with it, ever since… In the more modern Concrete sense, which was also a key liberating influence for me, as a young writer – I kinda prefer the impact they make too – but that’s just me and aesthetics, I suppose…

Daniel Ray on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
Hi Scott, Great! We are ever, infinitely on tests, under the vigil of God, there is a chain of command, mostly we fail to feel or recognize, we are here to pass the tests on challenge, you know, it is never easy to satisfy God for HE is the PERFECT JUDGE, once you qualify HIS test, you never ask for results of your performance or achievements to be recognized by mortal men, but it is equally important to have mortal recognitions to keep fighting for our survival, there is a chain of relationships, moments, and performance, it was a nice poem you have composed, keep writing, remember, you are also on HIS VIGIL, HE KNOWS each moment of your living, do to satisfy mankind to be in the good book of GOD, no more today, to your success in writing, DANIEL RAY

Yes, Scott (and Mary Kling), we all need to keep “bringing light to bear”. Ironically, several of today’s readings at mass, and in my Lenten devotions, had to do with the light. Intentionally, my post tomorrow (3-16-15) @ “Walk With Father Nature” is titled: “Light”. Scott: you make us wait long to better appreciate your valued verse. ~ Richard

Our conjoined instincts,
Like sexual fire,
Come and go.
But that’s the way of things.
Forever in the background
A persistent, elemental energy

Just is…
And when it bursts forth
Tis a wonderfully furious thing
I have to say these are absolutely my favourite lines Scott. And there is certainly no need to analyse…it speaks for itself…we are all living those moments
Mandla Thabo Sukati Qhobosheane on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
Several themes stood out and made me want to keep reading.
I liked your presentation of the concept that we cannot fathom how long the chain of interconnectedness is. That is deep and very true. In my opinion, 0nce we lift the veil of the belief systems we were born into the light comes in much stronger. And it’s up to us as individuals to nurture and come back to this light so that we can evolve spiritually and bring others with us. Because then the light becomes stronger and everpresent.
Poetry is a great way to keep us on our spiritual path. Before we came into human form we were given an assignment related to improving humanity in some way. It’s always great to see creative work that reaffirms this.
Thank you Scott.

It saddens me to think that so many do not experience that “wonderfully furious thing” that make life so worthwhile. This in itself is the answer to the perennial question “Why” when we undertake life’s journey. Most enjoyable poem Scott.
Micki Peluso on New Poem – there is an intricate chain…
Dear Scott,
This is a bit different than many of your poems, reflective, yet in a different sense. Perhaps from your long winter of discontent?
Forever in the background
A persistent, elemental energy
That didn’t ask to be here,
Just is…
And when it bursts forth
Tis a wonderfully furious thing.
This so completely sums up the dearth of creativity that seems to wax and wane in dark moments, then rise like the phoenix, bringing us back hope and the desire to begin again. As for ’tis’ it gives beauty to the lauguage of the poem even if not needed.
Micki

i feel so fortunate to be in physical condition to be able to go rave dancing with
twenty something year old folks and me at 54…
This instinctual connection is so strong in wildly freely non-possessive interpretive dance..
and truly the raising of mindful awareness in elevation of consciousness tells
me now for sure.. that my suspicions as a younger man when watching the
so called savage primitives flailing wildly around a fire.. is full of the sensuous
the sexual.. that makes humans alive.. and even science shows now that the sensual
or lust of life is what drives most all of human creativity and productivity flow…
Heaven is here.. and it truly is in the human connection to me.. fully expressed in how we
are born as tribe and not isolated pegs of song and dance…in everyday life..:)

Hi Scott,
Nice to be reading your work again … smiles. I’m hoping you’ll have some of mine in the not too distant future.
I really like this, but there’s a couple of nit-picky things to point out:
In the 5th line of the 2nd stanza it does not need to be there, and in the last line Tis just doesn’t sit right for me. Somehow it doesn’t sound like you …
Other than that … as I said, I really like this
Scott says: thanks Tony for spotting the ‘it’ – kind of you… This was actually a typo that snuck in to the published version somehow… So has now been cleaned out… However ’tis’ is a bit characteristic of Scottie to be honest with you – Rightly or wrongly I am rather fond of slipping in to using it when I need a one syllable fix for ‘it is’ which often sounds too heavy handed to my ear. Look forward to reading some of your new stuff… And have faith – one day the Moleskin will be stuffed to the gunnels!!

Right on Scott. Really like the poetry.
Here’s a sample from Chapter 7 of my upcoming novel:
Thunder shook the lush river valley and it began to pour. Heavy dense African rain.
Splish, splashety drips from creeks upstream united like brothers and gave way to roaring, plunging rivers downstream. A smoky mist rose from the thick mass of water tumbling and crashing onto the rocks below creating the rainforest, and majesty of Victoria Falls.
Palm trees, baobabs, and mahogany trees stood watch from the shore. A bushbuck enjoyed the drenching and savored a sip amidst crocodiles. Hiding in the rocks, a python watched two shepherds on horseback.

John Lysaght on New Poem – despite what we imagine…
I very much enjoyed your poem and I have some
thoughts, realizing that a poem is
multi-dimensional and interpretive.
I felt that Love is not happenstance, that there is an energy and
continuity of purpose inherent in life. Love is alive
in the universe, is reflected in Nature and is there to behold and
incorporated, if enjoined. I appreciated your tree reference
as life historians and teachers. I thought that the “broken hearted waif,”
adrift, would precede the hope of “to dream
again.” Also, the life force of dreams can repel negativity as Love blooms
from within.

Yes, I have been reading your amazing writing today and I must say- you are so very gifted! I have already become an admirer of your poetry.I feel so fortunate to be able to share the same planet with a wonderful soul like you, Scott.I loved the way how your heart beats out of your words.
Kenn on New Poem – despite what we imagine…
This poem does it wonderful job of delivering a lovable message. It also kept me tagging along till the end, in which you finally told us what the poem was aimed towards. We can definitely take a lot from love, but this poem really describes true love.
John Richter on New Poem – despite what we imagine…
Scott, your elegance is terrific beyond compare. Until the very last line I thought you were recreating (most wonderfully) the lyrics of one of my favorite songs – “Love stinks. Yeah. Yeah. Love stinks.”
But your last line made me realize the intensity of how it feels when we finally do fall. As a general rule I detest love poems because so very few of them are about love. Mostly they are about the feelings we have during foreplay or courtship. Rarely do bodily functions equate to love in my mind. But your poem here is the real deal, as we say over here, the real McCoy. Well enjoyed and I think well written also.
Misky on New Poem – despite what we imagine…
The last stanza, yes, but I also like the idea of unloading burdens on trees. That rather caught my imagination.
Kathryn Dyche Dechairo on New Poem – despite what we imagine…

Kanzen Sakura on New Poem – despite what we imagine…
Those trees and that last line. If only we would listen to the trees, we would learn so much. I had to think about this poem abit and then because I wanted more, I had to reread. “You were in me all the time.” perfect.

Jessica Klein on New poem – despite what we imagine…
It seems that this poem addresses a destiny determined before the earth took its first breath. It’s a stealth like piece–meaning it takes a compelling element of everyday life, desire, and enjoys it, but because as it is it always was…I’m very acquainted with the voice of this poem, and it’s astute and it’s written beautifully. Thank you.

Adda Leah Davis on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Love the poem, but seriously doubt that there are soulmates for each of us. That does not mean that I doubt love. Love brings out the depths of each of us and has been the catalyst for all the good this earth holds. Yet, love gone awry has also caused much heartache. All strong emotions have a flip side, I think like a psychiatrist friend once told me that sanity and insanity were a hair’s breath apart. I just try to live on the “sunny side of life.” I’d like to think that there are “soulmates” but like Santa Claus we all get shabby with time.
G.L. Meisner on New poem – despite what we imagine…

Humbird on New poem – despite what we imagine…

I love the way you dismiss the intrigue and take us to a place of destiny
“Lovers are never found by chance.”
Nice write
Much Love…
Mary Bach on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Some really lovely imagery here Scott. And it think it is very good advice to: “tell it to the trees.” I’m not quite sure what to do with the broken-hearted waif though. And, like everyone else, the last two stanzas and that final line resonate with me. Kudos
dsnake on New poem – despite what we imagine…

Your poem made me think that there is not much point to life at all if there is no love in it.It is the sole purpose of being here and makes the difference between just an existence and a real life.A beautiful poem.

Grace on New poem – despite what we imagine…
I simply love that ending line, it pulls me very nicely into the arms of the loved one ~
Susan on New poem – despite what we imagine…
What an image capturer you are! Thanks for the ones of Japan. In this poem, I did not anticipate the move to the lover being part of oneself, despite the trees waiting and watching, despite the dreamer and sufferer. But when the punch line came it was instant clarity, of course. Not saying that helps with heartbreak or even with patience though!
Patricia Wolf on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Love how you used the tree to build your poem… and if trees could talk we’d learn so much… lovely piece.
Kim Nelson on New poem – despite what we imagine…

Mary on New poem – despite what we imagine…
I like this poem, Scott. I do wonder do wonder about the first stanza a bit, as I like to think that lovers can be found by chance. I like to hope that there are these magical and chance happenings, those dreams that can come to pass. The last stanza is my favorite. Desire drawing us on to one another…..and then fruits. Thought-provoking indeed.
Brian Miller on New poem – despite what we imagine…
I like the correlation you make between us and trees… The rising sap… The desire that draws us together… and how there is no chance… but intention in those that are drawn together…

Nivedita Yohana on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Scott, I read your wonderful poem. Your poems never fail to bewitch me. Your beautiful words “So tell that to the trees who have seen it all ” and “Seems like We always had this coming. Our needs, till met,Like rising sap,…” switching between the objective and emotional; detachment and attachment.. Its a perfect symphony and in literary term it is indeed dialogic.
A true poet enriches and touches the soul to the very core and that is you.

Barbara Kasey Smith on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Scott – A beautiful poem with words of wisdom and truth; I too, don’t trust imaginations of what I expect from love – it’s hard to describe because I find love is hard to truly define in itself because “love” is giving much of yourself to another person and it’s sometimes hard to give all.
Roda Langrana on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Hi
Trees I too connect with at a much deeper level. I have also written a few more. Read them when you have the time … Roda
Shriram Sivaramakrishnan on New poem – despite what we imagine…
‘For not even fool’s comfort/Can cling on there’ – that is so original…I guess this sums up my entire experience of the poem. My only suggestion to Scott is that you can get away with the last line; leaving it unsaid. This, I believe, would add to the mood of the poem.
Richard Hevenga on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Scott: Your last stanza is powerful, with pinpoint accuracy. I’ve never seen desire described so well. ~ Richard

Happy Healthy Peaceful New Year filled with Love and Light.
Thank you for giving us this poem – it is lovely and a wonderful beginning to the New Year. In someone else’s hands the idea of love “blossoming” might not have bloomed – not so here – as always and as others have said your words are a veritable bouquet.
Wendy A Waters on New poem – despite what we imagine…
Ah Great Scott you’ve done it again..delivered that dark chocolate for the soul. Your poems are such an antidote to the evening news that increasingly leaves me wondering why so many “fruits of love” failed to ripen in these violent young souls.

Love the scope, breath and depth. Beyond the mortal and into the realm of the immortal. Beyond the human conscious and into the realm of life’s karma and for the stars to align there must first be an understanding and acknowledgement of one’s true being.
